Creating a Postgraduate Advanced Practice Nurse Fellowship in Cardiovascular Medicine

The Affordable Care Act has changed the face of health care provision and services in this country, expanding access to more than 30 million people (Buerhaus et al., 2012). With increased coverage comes increased use of health care systems, in a system already saddled with a deficient number of providers (HIS Inc., 2016). The solution to this has been the inclusion of advanced practice nurses (APNs) into both primary and specialty care services. Within cardiovascular medicine, there has been a surge in the recruitment of APNs to care teams (Virani et al., 2015). With this increased need comes the recognition that generalist education and preparation does not prepare an APN to be a competent cardiovascular medicine provider. Advanced practice nurse training has long left specialization to the postgraduate orientation period (Kells, Dunn, Melchiono, & Burke, 2015), and the demands of the healthcare system outweigh the current training models. This has opened the door for the creation of postgraduate fellowship programs for APNs (Taylor, Boryhill, Burris, & Wilcox, 2017). This project focused on the evaluation of existing cardiovascular APN fellowships and proposed the creation of a postgraduate APN fellowship in cardiovascular medicine at Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU).

The role of library services in the research of postgraduate students at the University Eduardo Mondlane, Mozambique

There are a number of reasons as to why governments are encouraging their universities to make research activities a priority. Research leads to birth of new knowledge and theory of the world. Such new knowledge drives the economies of the world. In this regard, academic libraries have been able to provide the tools that guide clients through an avalanche of information and assist researchers to identify what meets their particular needs. However, academic libraries are facing some challenges as a result of various changes in scholarly communication as they are no longer regarded as the sole primary provider of information to researchers. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of library services in the research of postgraduate students at the University Eduardo Mondlane (UEM) in Mozambique. The study looked at the services the library offered to postgraduate students, the sources of information most used by postgraduate students, the research information needs of postgraduate students, the ways the postgraduate students access research materials and the challenges that postgraduate students encounter when using the System of Libraries at the UEM. The first research question was answered by reviewing the professional literature as well the empirical data obtained from the librarians via interviews. The rest of the questions were answered by the students via questionnaires as well as interviews with the library staff. The researcher self-administered a questionnaire to 200 registered postgraduate students at the UEM and conducted interviews with seven librarians. The study adopted the Multiple Constituencies Model which each of its domains effectively helping in interpreting the results of the study. The study found that between 57 (32.3%) and 58 (33%) postgraduate students use the library to search for prescribed course materials and research related work. Furthermore, the study found that 152 (88.4%) students used the Internet to search for information. Although the study showed students used the library, the major challenges that students between 35(19.9%) and 96(54.5%) faced included poor English literacy skills, unstable Internet and outdated materials.

The establishment of evidence based filtered information on interventions addressing the successful completion of thesis requirements in postgraduate studies

Magister Artium (Psychology) - MA(Psych) / Postgraduate students are assumed to develop the capacity to conduct research independently and to evaluate their own work as internal supervisors through the process of thesis supervision. Research capacity building amongst postgraduate students is evidenced by the successful completion of degree requirements or graduation, but student retention and throughput is a problem. The study aimed to establish an evidence base of filtered information on interventions addressing the successful completion of thesis requirements in postgraduate students. The study design entailed a systematic review that explored published findings about research reporting on capacity building strategies and initiatives respectively. The researcher made the following ethical considerations namely, transparency, non-bias during data extraction and using two independent reviewers to assist the principle researcher and avoidance of plagiarism as the proposed study is project based and a collaborative process, which are essential when using a systematic review approach. The proposed study forms part of a larger parent study, which aims to identify factors that facilitate or hinder research capacity development in postgraduate students and new academics. The present study used an adaptation of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta- Analyses (PRISMA) statement, which is aimed at improving the reporting of systematic reviews and meta-analysis. Extracted data were subjected to a meta-synthesis, which included descriptive meta-synthesis and theory-explicative meta-synthesis. Eight articles were identified as good quality articles based on methodological rigour. The good quality research identified 1) high quality supervision, 2) faculty modelling, 3) support and 4) protected research time as effective strategies or interventions that stimulate successful completion of the thesis requirement. The use of appropriate theoretical frameworks in understanding supervision was identified as integral to effective strategies. Limitations of the study were identified and recommendations for future research were provided.
