The Theatre of a Thousand Plateaus : How can architecture accommodate the postmodern conceptions of the theatre and provide spaces for non-conventional theatricals where narrative is deconstructed and the audiences are active co-creators or co-participants? / Providing Spaces for Postmodern TheatricalsOhanyan, Rima January 2020 (has links)
Today’s world has undergone through a variety of changes shifting from metaphysical way of thinking into postmodernism which has left its footprint in the aspects of literature, art and theatre. But architecture doesn’t reflect those changes in the theatrical world because buildings are not adjusted to the postmodern performances. In this research I made a journey through postmodern philosophy, literature, art, architecture, and theatre and tried to analyze the main tools of postmodernism, such as deconstruction of narrative, displacement etc. Then I applied them into my project which makes an attempt to translate the postmodern mind into a physical space and create a theatrical area. It tries to answer the question whether architecture is able to accommodate postmodern conceptions and performances where the audiences are the creators and active participants of their own narratives. The case study of the performance Sleep No More has become the concept for my design proposal where I also used displacement to combine several objects in a new context. The analysis and the design method have shown that architecture can accommodate all the cultural developments and can transform from postmodern conceptions into a physical space with the help of the same tools that are used in postmodern literature, art and philosophy. A building can become the embodiment of a post modernistic idea.

Fundamentos da arquitetura pós-moderna: anotações sobre o pós-modernismo em Minas Gerais / Foundations of the postmodern architecture: notes on the postmodernism in Minas GeraisCremasco, Matteo Santi 16 March 2011 (has links)
This essay comprises two distinct parts. In the first one, contrary to the postmodern and the contemporary theoreticians, it is set a general definition of postmodernism: we must name as postmodernist the work of art or architecture that reproduces very well-known images and gives them unexpected meanings. With this statement, which is presented in two books of Robert Venturi, it is proved the possibility of defining the postmodernism, despite its multiple expressions. Since there are no rules for choosing the type of images that artists and architects will duplicate nor for changing their original meanings to new ones, the postmodern pieces can assume any configurations. Therefore, to indicate what is (or is not) postmodern, we shall consider the features behind the form or the materials of each work. As it is impracticable to identify the postmodernism looking at the pieces, the concepts of art and architecture (which have to match all the existing styles of art or architecture, including the postmodernism) count some points that are not immediately accessible to the eyes. The arrival of the postmodernism invalidated all the theories that used to justify the status of art or architecture of a work on its appearance; in fact, there are exactly alike objects that differ from each other because only one of them has a real artistic or architectonic value. To talk about the nature of works of art and architecture, it is taken the Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel\'s aesthetics into account; according to the Hegelian doctrine, postmodernism corresponds to a new step on the process of spiritual development, through which humanity has increased its consciousness of itself and the world, and art and architecture have left perception for reflection. Finally, it is contested the postmodern thesis concerning the end of narratives, with a defense of art history. In the second part, it is pointed the causes for the postmodern movement in Minas Gerais, Brazil, remarking its political and cultural environment in the 80\'s and the leadership of the Brazilian architect Éolo Maia.

Paolo Portoghesi et la voie post-moderne : le débat architectural dans l’Italie de la seconde moitié du XXe siècle / Paolo Portoghesi & the Postmodern way : the architectural debate in Italy during the second half of the twentieth centuryChavardès, Benjamin 28 November 2014 (has links)
Following the fall of the Fascist regime, Italy enters a phase of rebuilding and reconstruction, also on an ideological and cultural level. In the field of architecture, this phenomenon triggers debates about the link to the tradition, the dialog between history and practice of the architectural project, and a renewed relationship between the buildings and the city. This environment and the First Venice Biennale are conducive to Post-modernism theories to develop themselves. This intellectual renewal of the discipline is here analyzed via a particular focus: Paolo Portoghesi's one. This architect holds throughout his carrier several major positions in the educational field, research field, press sector, book publishing and also as a practitioner. The thesis aims at highlighting the role Portoghesi played in the history of the second half of the twentieth century, through his texts and works, and the testimonies of his contemporaries. After examining his work as an architectural historian and a Roman Baroque specialist (Chapter One), the study shows how his researches are used in the architectural conception, making him a representative of the operative criticism (Chapter 2). Considering his action as a teacher, Editor in Chief and President of the architectural section of the Venice Biennale, enables to position him in the Roman School of Architecture (Chapter 3) and as one of the major characters of Post-Modernism in Europe (Chapter 4). His life's path illustrates the transition between willing to stick to the spirit of the time and the theory of the genius loci, firstly through contemporary city conception (Chapter 5), then with the concept of “geo-architecture”.

Postmodernizmo architektūros privatūs gyvenamieji namai Lietuvoje / Postmodern single-family houses in LithuaniaGalaunytė, Aistė 21 June 2013 (has links)
Baigiamajame magistro darbe nagrinėjama postmodernizmo stiliaus raiška privačiuose gyvenamuosiuose namuose Lietuvoje, nuo XX a. 9 dešimtmečio vidurio iki 10 dešimtmečio pabaigos. Darbo apimtis – 92 p. teksto be priedo, 57 iliustr., 9 schemos, 99 bibliografiniai šaltiniai, 3 priedai. / The goal of Master thesis is to investigate expression and features of postmodern style of private dwelling-houses of Lithuania, from the middle of the 9th decade to the 10th decade of the twentieth century. In order to reveal the characteristics, features and cultural significance of the style in Lithuania, the private dwelling-houses of postmodern style of the Western world (the U.S., Western Europe, Japan) are analyzed, as well as conditions which prompted their development. The paper discusses that the social, political and economic factors of Lithuania at that time, led to the suspicion and critical evaluation of postmodern architecture in general. It is assumed that due to the political-economical factors, the Western magazines were one of the main tools for Lithuanian architects to get to know postmodern architecture. Therefore, a comparative analysis between private dwelling-houses published in foreign periodicals, and of Lithuania, is conducted. Consequently the most common features of private dwelling-houses of postmodern style in Lithuania and their links with Western architecture are determined. Houses of Lithuania of high quality postmodern architecture are named, their valuable properties are defined. Thesis consists of: 92 p. text without extras, 57 pictures., 9 schemes, 99 bibliographical entries, 3 appendixes included.
