Study and Implementation of a Power Line Communication Adaptor Using OFDM Technique

Lin, Yao-Hui 21 January 2008 (has links)
This thesis aims to implement a power-line communication (PLC) adaptor to use power lines as transmission media for network communication between different floors in buildings. The PLC adaptor is based on a turbo-mode chip that adopts OFDM modulation technique with 4.5-21 MHz bandwidth and can accord with the HomePlug 1.0 standard. The other components include a physical-layer chip, a flash memory, a TX/RX filter, and a switching power supply with three outputs. All the above components are integrated into a PCB to form a PLC adaptor. The PCB layout has included EMI solutions to reduce interference to the communication signal. After burning process for the flash memory to record the MAC address, the PLC adaptor becomes a network node. Point-to-point communication test is performed between two PLC adaptors located on different floors of a building. The testing items include signal attenuation test and signal throughput test.

Viability of Powerline Communication for Smart Grid Realization

Aalamifar, Fariba 01 May 2012 (has links)
There is an international effort to develop smart grids to overcome the problems caused by aging power grids. However, to immigrate to the new grid, the IT infrastructure has to be integrated with the current power grid. There is currently an ongoing debate surrounding what would be the best choice for smart grid communication technology. One of the promising communication technologies for smart grid realization is powerline communication (PLC). PLC provides utilities the opportunity of managing their own network infrastructure. Power cables are everywhere; even rural areas are covered with power cables. However, because of its noisy environment and the low capacity of narrowband powerline communication (NBPLC), its viability for smart grid realization is being questioned. To investigate this issue, smart grid communication network requirements and powerline communication technologies and channel models are studied. Then, using MATLAB and Network Simulator-2, powerline communication and a smart grid communication network (SGCN) are simulated. The performance of different powerline channels for smart grid realization is investigated and a viable PLC infrastructure for smart grid communication network is proposed. Furthermore, to have a better understanding of the viability of powerline communication for the smart grid, some future smart grid advanced applications are investigated and integrated to the system. It is shown that although two types of powerline channels do not perform well, the proposed powerline communication infrastructure, even under advanced traffic, is capable of providing the smart grid with its communication prerequisites. / Thesis (Master, Electrical & Computer Engineering) -- Queen's University, 2012-04-30 15:31:43.471

PLC. Automação. Média Tensão. Óleo & Gás. Smart Grid.

Notch Filter Design for Power Line Interference Artifact Reduction of ECG Signal and Feature Extraction in LabVIEW

Kasidi, Divyasri 05 1900 (has links)
Electrocardiogram (ECG) is a biological signal that represents the heart's electrical activity. Interference from power lines introduces a frequency component of 50 to 60 Hz into the signal, which is the principal cause of ECG corruption. By using the Cadence Virtuoso Spectre circuit simulator and typical TSMC RF 180 nm CMOS technology, a notch filter was created to reduce powerline interference. The advantage of utilizing a notch filter for PLI is that noise at 60 Hz is completely eliminated without sacrificing any important information. Additionally, this study contains a MATLAB-based model for, which is used to compute the power spectral density for the obtained time-domain signal. By incorporating power spectral density into data gathering procedures, it is feasible to enhance data collection methodologies, construct models that appropriately account for observed power and aid in the removal of undesired components. NI LabVIEW is used to extract features. The advantage of ECG feature extraction is that it provides information that assists in the identification of cardiac rhythm issues, and gives information about the occurrence of heart attack. In this study, several patient data sets are utilized to extract characteristics and provide information regarding heart condition abnormalities.

Channel modelling and relay for powerline communications

Tan, Bo January 2013 (has links)
The thesis discusses the channel modelling and relay techniques in powerline communications (PLC) which is considered as a promising technology for the Smart Grid communications, Internet access and home area network (HAN). In this thesis, the statistical PLC channel characteristics are investigated, a new statistical channel modelling method is proposed for the in-door PLC. Then a series of the relay protocols are suggested for the broadband communications over power grid. The statistical channel modelling method is proposed to surmount the limits of the traditional deterministic PLC channel models such as multipath model and transmission line model. To develop the channel model, the properties of the multipath magnitudes, interval between the paths, cable loss and the channel classification are investigated in detail. Then, each property is described by statistical distribution or formula. The simulation results show that the statistical model can describe the PLC channels as accurate as deterministic models without the topology information which is a time-consuming work for collecting. The relay transmission is proposed to help PLC adapting the diverse application scenarios. The protocols covers the main relay aspects which include decode/amplify forwarding, single/ multiple relay nodes, full/half duplex relay working mode. The capacity performance of each protocol is given and compared. A series of the facts which improve the performance of the PLC networks are figured out according to simulation results. The facts include that the decode-and-forward is more suitable for the PLC environment, deviation or transforming station is better location for placing relay node and full duplex relay working mode help exploiting the capacity potential of the PLC networks. Some future works are pointed out based on the work of statistical channel model and relay. In the last part of this thesis, an unit based statistical channel model is initialled for adapting various PLC channel conditions, a more practical relay scenario which contains multiple data terminals is proposed for approaching the realistic transmission scenario. At last, the relay for the narrowband PLC Smart Grid is also mentioned as future research topic.
