The relationship between the beliefs of early childhood teachers and their use of scaffold, instruction and negotiation as teaching strategies

This study investigates the relationship between the beliefs of early childhood education teachers and their use of the teaching strategies instruction and negotiation in relation to the scaffold process. Consideration of thinking skills and the ability to problem solve through the vehicle of play provided the background to the research focus. The research was undertaken in two differently structured early childhood education centres in New Zealand with a case study design framing the gathering of data through observations and interviews. It is a small qualitative study driven by socio-cultural theory and therefore considered from a social constructivist position. The main findings from observations and interviews revealed that not all teachers had congruency between their beliefs and practice, that instruction could be the only mediation within a scaffolding process and by considering the power relations in the learning and teaching situation, a model of how different teaching strategies could be related to different states of thinking. A key finding was that of a definition of negotiation as a teaching strategy.

Using goal structure to direct search in a problem solver

This thesis describes a class of problems in which interactions occur when plans to achieve members of a set of simultaneous goals are concatenated in the hope of achieving the whole goal. They will be termed "interaction problems". Several well known problems fall into this class. Swapping the values of two computer registers is a typical example. A very simple 3 block problem is used to illustrate the interaction difficulty. It is used to describe how a simple method can be employed to derive enough information from an interaction which has occurred to allow problem solving to proceed effectively. The method used to detect interactions and derive information from them, allowing problem solving to be re-directed, relies on an analysis of the goal and subgoal structure being considered by the problem solver. This goal structure will be called the "approach" taken by the system. It specifies the order in which individual goals are being attempted and any precedence relationships between them (say because one goal is a precondition of an action to achieve another). We argue that the goal structure of a problem contains information which is simpler and more meaningful than the actual plan (sequence of actions) being considered. We then show how an analysis of the goal structure of a problem, and the correction of such a structure in the light of any interaction, can direct the search towards a successful solution. Interaction problems pose particular difficulties for most current problem solvers because they achieve each part of a composite goal independently and assume that the resulting plans can be concatenated to achieve the overall goal. This assumption is beneficial in that it can drastically reduce the search necessary in many problems. However, it does restrict the range of problems which can be tackled. The problem solver, INTERPLAN, to be described as a result of this investigation, also assumes that subgoals can be solved independently, but when an interaction is detected it performs an analysis of the goal structure of the problem to re-direct the search. INTERPLAN is an efficient system which allows the class of interaction problems to be coped with. INTERPLAN uses a data structure called a "ticklist" as the basis of its mechanism for keeping track of the search it performs. The ticklist allows a very simple method to be employed for detecting and correcting for interactions by providing a summary of the goal structure of the problem being tried.

Using Eye Movements to Investigate Insight Problem Solving

In four experiments on insight problem solving, we investigated the time course of the development of solution knowledge prior to response, as well as the impact of stimulus familiarity on task performance and eye movement measures. In each experiment, participants solved anagram problems while their eye movements were monitored. In Experiments 1a and 1b, each anagram problem consisted of a circular array of letters: a scrambled four-letter solution word containing three consonants and one vowel, and an additional randomly-placed distractor consonant. Viewing times on the distractor consonant compared to the solution consonants provided an online measure of knowledge of the solution. Viewing times on the distractor consonant and the solution consonants were indistinguishable early in the trial. In contrast, several seconds prior to the response, viewing times on the distractor consonant decreased in a gradual manner compared to viewing times on the solution consonants. Importantly, this pattern was obtained across both trials in which participants reported the subjective experience of insight and trials in which they did not. These findings are consistent with the availability of partial knowledge of the solution prior to such information being accessible to subjective phenomenal awareness. In Experiments 2 and 3, each anagram problem consisted of a centrally located three-letter string plus three additional individual letters located above and to the side of the central letter string. All the letters in the central letter string were members of the five-letter solution word, while one of the individual letters was a randomly placed distractor. In Experiment 2, we replicated our findings of the gradual development of solution knowledge using this more complex stimulus display. In Experiment 3, we manipulated the familiarity of the central letter string by presenting it either in the form of a three-letter word, or as a meaningless string of letters. Behavioural measures showed an overall negative impact of familiarity on task performance, while eye movement measures revealed a more complex pattern of effects, including both interference and facilitation. Critically, the effects of familiarity on problem solving did not interact with the development of solution knowledge prior to response.

Invisible displacement understanding in dogs (Canis familiaris), chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), and other primates

The Piagetian invisible displacement task has been used extensively in the filed of comparative cognition to measure representational capacity. In the task a desirable object is hidden beneath one of several hiding boxes via a displacement device, such as a small opaque container. Success on the task is deemed to require that the invisible trajectory of the object be mentally represented and its current location inferred. That is, the task is supposed to measure the ability to “think” of something that is occurring outside of direct perception. However, simple associative strategies may also lead to success in the absence of stringent control conditions. Among mammals, only great apes and domestic dogs have consistently performed above chance on the invisible displacement task. There is much converging evidence from other tasks to suggest that great apes have a capacity for representational thought. However, dogs have shown few signs of possessing the representational abilities generally though necessary to pass the task. Thus, in Chapter 2, four experiments investigated how dogs (n=35) find an object that has been invisibly displaced behind one of three opaque boxes under four control conditions devised to separate associative search strategies from performance based on mental representation. Strategies involving experimenter cue-use, search at the last or first box visited by the displacement device, and search at boxes adjacent to the displacement device were systematically controlled for. Dogs passed invisible displacement’s but only if the device used to displace the object was adjacent to the target box following displacements. These results suggest that the search behaviour of dogs was guided by simple associative rules rather than mental representation of past trajectory of the object. In contrast, Experiment 5 found that, on the same task, 18- and 24-moth-old children (n=21) showed no disparity between trials in which the displacement device was adjacent or non-adjacent to the target box. In Chapter 3, two chimpanzees were tested on single invisible displacements under the same four control conditions that were administered to dogs. In contract to dogs, chimpanzees showed no indication of utilizing these simple strategies, suggesting that their capacity to mentally represent single invisible displacements is comparable to that of 18- to 24-month-old children. Chapter 4 followed up reports of children and apes’ difficulty with double invisible displacements in which an object is hidden at two non-adjacent boxes in a linear array. Experiment 1 eliminated the possibility that chimpanzees’ previous poor performance was due to the hiding direction of the displacement device. Subjects failed double non-adjacent displacements, showing a tendency to select adjacent boxes. In Experiments 2 and 3, chimpanzees and 24-month-old children were tested on a new adaptation of the task involving four hiding boxes presented in a diamond-shaped array on a vertical plane. Both species performed above change on double invisible displacements using this format, suggesting that previous poor performance was due to a response bias or inhibition problem rather than a fundamental limitation in representational capacity. In Chapter 5, I conducted a pilot study examining the performance of siamangs and a spider monkey on single and double invisible displacements. Performance was mixed but provides some promising evidence that invisible displacements are within the capacity of siamangs. In contrast to siamangs and chimpanzees, but like dogs, the spider monkey showed a significant tendency to search at a box adjacent to the displacement device on simple invisible displacements. However, the spider monkey performed above chance on an impromptu test of single invisible displacements presented in the vertical format. Further study is needed to eliminate alternative associative strategies in these two species. In Chapter 6, I discuss the findings of the study with dogs, chimpanzees, 2-year-old children, siamangs, and a spider monkey on invisible displacement understanding. The results highlight the importance of associative strategies and inhibition problems. The thesis presents strong evidence of stage 6 invisible displacement understanding, and thus representational thought, in chimpanzees and 2-year-old children, but suggests that dogs are capable of only stage 5 objective permanence understanding.

Rapid development of problem-solvers with HeurEAKA! - a heuristic evolutionary algorithm and incremental knowledge acquisition approach

A new approach for the development of problem-solvers for combinatorial problems is proposed in this thesis. The approach combines incremental knowledge acquisition and probabilistic search algorithms, such as evolutionary algorithms, to allow a human to rapidly develop problem-solvers in new domains in a framework called HeurEAKA. The approach addresses a known problem, that is, adapting evolutionary algorithms to the search domain by the introduction of domain knowledge. The development of specialised problem-solvers has historically been labour intensive. Implementing a problem-solver from scratch is very time consuming. Another approach is to adapt a general purpose search strategy to the problem domain. This is motivated by the observation that in order to scale an algorithm to solve complex problems, domain knowledge is needed. At present there is no systematic approach allowing one to efficiently engineer a specialpurpose search strategy for a given search problem. This means that, for example, adapting evolutionary algorithms (which are general purpose algorithms) is often very difficult and has lead some people to refer to their use as a ???black art???. In the HeurEAKA approach, domain knowledge is introduced by incrementally building a knowledge base that controls parts of the evolutionary algorithm. For example, the fitness function and the mutation operators in a genetic algorithm. An evolutionary search algorithm ismonitored by a human whomakes recommendations on search strategy based on individual solution candidates. It is assumed that the human has a reasonable intuition of the search problem. The human adds rules to a knowledge base describing how candidate solutions can be improved, or why they are desirable or undesirable in the search for a good solution. The incremental knowledge acquisition approach is inspired by the idea of (Nested) Ripple Down Rules. This approach sees a human provide exception rules to rules already existing in the knowledge base using concrete examples of inappropriate performance of the existing knowledge base. The Nested Ripple Down Rules (NRDR) approach allows humans to compose rules using concepts that are natural and intuitive to them. In HeurEAKA, NRDR are significantly adapted to form part of a probabilistic search algorithm. The probabilistic search algorithms used in the presented system are a genetic algorithm and a hierarchical bayesian optimization algorithm. The success of the HeurEAKA approach is demonstrated in experiments undertaken on industrially relevant domains. Problem-solvers were developed for detailed channel and switchbox routing in VLSI design and traffic light optimisation for urban road networks. The problem-solvers were developed in a short amount of time, in domains where a large amount of effort has gone into developing existing algorithms. Experiments show that chosen benchmark problems are solved as well or better than existing approaches. Particularly in the traffic light optimisation domain excellent results are achieved.

Students' self-beliefs, attitudes and behaviours in school friendship and acquaintance groups

The broad aim of this research was to investigate group work in schools with friends and acquaintances. More specifically, the study sought to identify motivational factors that may underlie students' attitudes and behaviours when working in these contexts. Independent and interdependent self-construal, and self-efficacy for group work, were identified as variables that may be important for working in friendship and acquaintance groups. The participants were Year 10 and Year 11 students from secondary schools in the metropolitan area of Sydney, Australia. Data collection was carried out in three phases, the first two were survey-based, and the third was a mixed-methods study. In phase 1, participants (N = 188) attended two Independent schools. The main data analyses comprised exploratory factor analysis and multiple regression analysis. In phase 2, the participants (N = 583) attended nine randomly selected public schools. Data analysis was carried out using confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modelling. In phase 3, participants (N = 38), attended two randomly selected public schools. In this phase, survey, observational and interview data were collected and analysed. The observational analysis centred on how students in friendship and acquaintance groups interacted whilst working on a group problem-solving activity. The interviews focused on students' experiences in the group problem-solving activity and their general perceptions, beliefs, and feelings about group work with friends and acquaintances. Group performance in the problem-solving activity was measured. Two results seemed particularly important. First, was the suggestion that self-efficacy for being receptive to the ideas of others and- self-efficacy for group facilitation in the friendship context may "flow-on" to corresponding self-efficacy beliefs in the acquaintance context. Second, interdependent and independent self, and self-efficacy for group work, were identified as important variables with regard to students' attitudes and behaviours in friendship and acquaintance groups. From a theoretical perspective the focus in this research on self-beliefs represents a relatively new way of studying group work with friends and acquaintances. From a practical perspective, the findings from the research should provide direction for teachers when they make decisions about how to organize students into groups for the purposes of learning.
