An experimental evaluation of Markov channel models

Zhou, Wenge 05 September 2012 (has links)
M.Ing. / The main contribution of this thesis can be summarized as follows. Firstly, we implemented a high speed error gap recording system, which can run with at most with a slight adaptation, on any personal computer, doing gap recording for digital communication systems, achieving a data rate of up to 200 kbits/sec. Secondly, we extended previous experimental investigations of the Fritchman channel model to three other channel models, namely the Gilbert, Gilbert-Elliott, and Aldridge- Ghanbari models, and implemented these models experimentally by a set of computer programs. Thirdly, we investigated the statistical modeling of two analog channels, employed for digital transmission. These are an analog audio cassette, magnetic tape recorder and an analog cordless telephone operating in the 46/49 MHz. band, in the CT1 system. No evidence could be found in the literature of modeling error distributions on these two channels.

Integrating product design and manufacturing process : a framework and implementation

Li, Yu-An 24 August 1994 (has links)
The importance of integrating design and manufacturing becomes apparent when the increase in the degree of difficulty of change is observed as the product development proceeds from concept to production in a serial engineering process. The greatest opportunity in design for manufacture occurs at the initial design stage before any commitments to tooling and equipment have been made. This research develops a framework and an implementation system dealing with integration of design, manufacturing and economic aspects in the development of a product. The objective is to evaluate process technology for a specified product design and to identify the best work/tool material combination and production conditions to optimize the production process. A commercial CAD/CAM package (SmartCAM) playing roles as a part design tool, a processing time simulator, and a NC code generator is integrated with a manufacturing database, and a machining cost model. This integrated system runs in Microsoft Windows environment under an external program which not only coordinates the activities of various modules but also enhances the capabilities of SmartCAM. This system allows product design evaluation for economic and technical criteria and recommends best manufacturing environment. An NC program containing recommended machining parameters is generated. Furthermore, the system reports on tool wear on each tool per part manufactured. This information is useful for cost analysis as well as for producing a tool replacement schedule. / Graduation date: 1995

Construct validity of the Dean-Woodcock Neuropsychological Assessment System Sensory Motor Battery : an exploratory factor analysis

Lewis, Morris N. January 1997 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to add to the body of psychometric evidence underlying the Dean-Woodcock Sensory Motor Battery (DWSMB) and the theory of sensory motor functioning. Secondly, this study added to the body of literature concerning the role of both cortical and subcortical areas of the brain in motor functioning. The DWSMB is a new battery designed to meet the emerging trends in neuropsychology. It combines the qualitative functionality of the sensory and motor tests used by clinical neurologists with the quantitative, performance-driven sensory motor tests found in traditional neuropsychological assessment batteries. The DWSMB consists of eight tests of sensory functions, seven tests of cortical motor functions, and three tests of subcortical motor functions.A population sample of 441 participants were administered the DWSMB, 340 of which had no reported neurological or psychiatric history. These data were analyzed using an exploratory factor analysis to determine the number of constructs underlying the DWSMB. The study found three factors: a Complex Sensory Motor Factor, a Simple Sensory Factor, and a Subcortical Motor Factor. The three constructs found in this study provided empirical support for the underlying theory of the DWSMB, which will allow neuropsychologists to make inferences about the resulting scores. / Department of Educational Psychology

Triagem estendida: um modo de recepção de clientes em um clínica-escola de psicologia / Extended Screening of patients: a way of taking in clients in a psychology school-clinic

Chammas, Debora 04 February 2010 (has links)
The psychological screening is a practice commonly used in public mental health institutions in order to select the portion of the population interested in psychotherapy that can be encompassed by the services offered and to refer the user (patient) to an appropriate service to their demand. Because it is a psychological evaluation, although initial and brief, comprises functions and complex technical features, which must be studied, and also is not exempt from theoretical-clinical references. It is, however, generally carried out in a brief way (simplistic way), and just as the collection of personal data of the patient, what can aggravate frequent problems in clinics such as the wastefulness of the precious moment for an immediate psychological assistance (the one in which the client seeks help), as well as the premature discontinuation of therapy (dropout), when it is a result from an inadequate referral, with regard to the client\'s request and necessity. Models of psychological interventional trials, each one with its specific technical and theory, are proposed as an alternative to deal with some of these problems. They perform both, evaluation and assistance. The objective of this research was to analyze some of the reaches of an accomplishment experience of consultations in an interventional screening modality. This study gave continuity to a previous project, 2004, initially called the Psychological Consultations, that studied a reception with the returns, offered to those who had not had one of six vacant per week for the psychological screening in a school-clinic of São Paulo. In 2006, came to be called Screening Extended. The proposed service was to perform screening of up to six meetings, with semi-structured clinical interviews and under psychoanalytic point of view. The service had two main objectives: firstly perform on detail the traditional gathering of user data, with specific details of customer\'s needs, requests and interests, in order to offer appropriate referral; secondly, offers care at the moment in which there was a request for help promoting therapeutic relief if possible, in order to deal with specific demands. This was a clinical-qualitative research, with the study of 10 cases, with the aim of assessing the scope of the modality when it is applied. It was discussed if the planned objectives were achieved and what were the benefits of the modality for the patient and for the way of organizing the flow routine of institutional users. In line with other studies, there was a screening as a significant therapeutic space as it hosted the patient and provided a better understanding of the conflict. It was observed that the referral for an therapy occurred after the client have obtained information about psychotherapy and that there was a greater involvement of it at that choice. The participants\' opinions regarding the care received (obtained through a follow up) were positive for most. One year after the completion of the assistance, some had followed the referral to therapy; others thought that the received care was already enough. This bifurcation has suggested that there are two types of demands, for focal and prolonged care, each one differently embraced and elaborated in an extended reception. Although there are difficulties in implementing this type of service due to the need for coordination with other services, an initial prolonged listening proved to be effective as a resource for dealing with some institutional problems.

No. of bitstreams: 1 KalineSA_DISSERT.pdf: 2243045 bytes, checksum: 9dabba13b96342942efddd4c92702632 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014-05-19 / The considerable expansion of Distance Education registered in recent years in Brazil raises the importance of debate about how the implementation of this policy has been happening so that formulators and implementers make better informed decisions, maximizing results, identifying successes and overcoming bottlenecks. This study aims to evaluate the implementation process of Distance Education policy by Secretary of Distance Education of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte. For this, we sought to use an evaluation proposal consistent with this policy, and came to the one developed by Sonia Draibe (2001), which suggests an analysis called anatomy of evaluation general process. To achieve the objectives, we made a qualitative research, case study type, using documentary research and semi-structured interviews with three groups of subjects who belong to the policy: managers, technicians and beneficiaries. It was concluded that: the implementation process needs a open contact channel between the management and technicians and beneficiaries; the lack of clarity in the dissemination of information between technicians produces noises that affects the outcomes; the absence of dissemination of internal and external actions contributes to the perpetuation of prejudice in relation to Distance Education; using selection criteria based on competence and merit contributes to form a team of skilled technicians to perform their function within the policy; an institution that do not enable technicians generates gaps that possibly will turn into policy implementation failures; all subjects involved in politics need internal evaluations to contribute to improvements in the implementation process, however, a gap is opened between the subjects if there is no socialization of results; the existence of an internal structure that manipulates financial resources and balances the budget from different maintainer programs is essencial; the consortium between IES and municipalities in presential support poles are bottlenecks in the process, since beneficiaries are exposed to inconsistency and lack of commitment of these local municipalities / A consider?vel expans?o da Educa??o a Dist?ncia (EaD) registrada nos ?ltimos anos no Brasil levanta a import?ncia do debate sobre como vem sendo feita a implementa??o desta pol?tica, para que formuladores e implementadores tomem decis?es com maior conhecimento, maximizando resultados, identificando ?xitos e superando pontos de estrangulamento.
