The study of spatial efficience for produer service industry in Taiwanese cities

Lin, Chris 11 June 2002 (has links)
In the past few years, the prominent achievement of economy in Taiwan has been called the ¡§ Taiwan Experience¡¨ or ¡§The Miracle of Economy¡¨. Urban is not only the place that people gather to take economic activities and live in groups, but also the area that produce and consume goods. Now the modern economy has expanded as the type of urban economic. Nowadays, service industry which has been the major industry during the transition of industrial structure in Taiwan could be an illustration that Taiwan is in the age of Service Economy, the functions of a city are going to be more various and delicate, and the division of industry is tending to be more professional. Though the service industry that just serves customers in the past can¡¦t totally meet the needs of the public, the growth of its high specialization and output value bridges the gap for the problems resulted from the manufacturing industry. Most important, the producer service industry has become the main industry in the world. The purpose of this research is to understand the development in the present and tendency of producer service industry, and also to measure the space efficiency of producer service industry in 22 counties for three years by Data Envelopment Analysis(DEA). The research is divided into five parts: the first part includes research structure and literature review. The second part is to discuss and figure out the theory of DEA. The third part is to analyze the transition and development of producer service in present days. In the fourth part of the research measures the efficiency of producer service industry in 22 counties, in the mean time it estimates the relation of among efficiency, agglomerate economy, city scale, public investment, and the development of other industries by regression analysis and chi-square test. Then the conclusions and recommendations would be discussed to government that makes the plans of economy industry policy and the development of producer service industry. The conclusions of this research are: 1.The producer service industry in Taiwan grows rapidly, and the industry gathers in Taipei city which Location Quotient is more than one . In addition, Taipei city plays the most role for industry¡¦s output value, the numbers of employees and factories Moreover, the producer service industry in Taipei Metropolitan Area and other Metropolitan city gradually grows. Furthermore, the industry is expanding to the nearby metropolitan gradually. 2.The producer service industry and the industries in the producer service industry are influenced by Forward Linkage Effect. This shows that the industry grows rapidly following other industries development during the development of economy. 3.The producer service industry in Taipei city shows the excellent space efficiency. On the other hand, the some of 22 cities areas showed efficiency from 1986 to 1991, and the nearby metropolitan area also showed efficiency in 1996, especially in Taipei metropolitan area and in Kaohsiung metropolitan area. 4.The space efficiency of producer service industry shows remarkable relation with city scale, agglomerate economy and public investment. Additionally, the producer service industry also has the close relation with manufacturing industry and non-producer service industry during the development of industry.

Locational Distribution of Global Advanced Producer Service Firms in the Polycentric US Metropolis

Oner, Asli Ceylan 22 April 2008 (has links)
This study is generally concerned with the assumption that the contemporary global flows of people, capital, and commodities, which accelerated dramatically in the age of globalization, have significant impacts on the land use patterns of global cities. With this assumption, the study further questions in the context of polycentric US metropolis, whether or not the distribution of transnational advanced producer service firms define a new form of centrality, in which the traditional central business districts and suburban centers differ from each other in terms of spatial clustering patterns and sectoral distributions of transnational advanced producer service firms. Spatial clustering patterns of advanced producer service firms are evaluated according to high-rise and high-density criteria. In ten selected cities, clusters of advanced producer service firms and high-rise office buildings are identified through the Nearest Neighbor Hierarchical Clustering Method in CrimeStat. To define the polycentric US metropolis, the research employs Lang et al's (2006) classification of metropolitan office space. The results show significant differences between former manufacturing belt cities and Sunbelt cities. / Ph. D.

Market Potential Analysis of Producer Services : A Study of Jönköping County

Kantola, Jan January 2007 (has links)

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the market potential of producer services in Jönköping County. In relation to the main purpose, the idea is to examine which factors that have a positive impact on the development of a long run qualitative producer service industry in the region.

The favourable location of Jönköping County is one of the main factors for why the county has one of the highest densities of manufacturing firms in Sweden. Moreover, the region has comparative advantages in several products, for an example; wood, rubber, machinery and electronically goods. Earlier research and comparisons with other international manufacturing clusters indicates that these areas tend to contain highly developed producer service industries. The thesis gives a case example of how the beneficial, mutual interaction between the manufacturing and producer service industries works in the car industry in Germany. However, to be able to establish a successful and close relationship between the above mentioned industries, the theoretical framework distinguishes several important factors; for instance, education and infrastructure are assumed to be the two most vital ingredienses. Nonetheless, also the firms’ production milieu and technology affects the successful development of a cluster district. Furthermore, when relating the theoretical assumptions to the descriptive statistics, with the intention to elucidate the industrial structure of Jönköping County, one can differentiate three major producer service sectors, namely; “Transport and mail”, “Consulting, marketing, law” and finally “Rentals of premises, labour and machinery”. Nevertheless, several alarming observations can be noticed concerning the wage level, education intensity, productivity and gross profit percentage within the county’s producer service industry; where all these features are below the domestic average. Nevertheless, the empirical analysis indicates that the region has a varying, but yet a positive market potential in the majority of the county’s municipalities. With correct priorities, Jönköping County has good future prospects to reach a high competitive position, but to accomplish this; the education intensity has to be improved.
/
Dock påträffas flera oroväckande iakttagelser gällande lönenivåer, utbildningsintensitet, produktivitet och bruttovinstandelar inom produktionstjänster i länet, då samtliga faktorer hamnar under riksgenomsnittet.
