This thesis documents the production of a seventeen-minute narrative film production, Submit. It includes chapters outlining the development, pre-production, production and post-production stages. In addition, the script, shot lists, equipment request form, budget, and camera reports are included. Written, produced, and directed by the author, Submit is the story about a man's desire to right his life by winning back a former love. The story involves deceit and plays with notions of identity and place. The film was shot in seven days throughout the City of New Orleans. The goal of this project was to create a short piece that in turn would be employed to garner further resources to shoot a feature length film.

Investigation of Vartm Processing of High Temperature RP-46 Resin SystemUnknown Date (has links)
The advantages of using polymer matrix composites in various applications are very well known throughout many industries. Their introduction and subsequent development since the 1940's has led to major cost savings due to their lightweight and excellent mechanical properties. Off late, product designers have been taking advantage of improved thermal properties (CTE, thermo-oxidative stability) that these composite materials have to offer. This began with the development of PMR-15, a high temperature polyimide resin back in the 1970's. The aerospace industry has increasingly turned towards high temperature polymer matrix composites (HTPMC) to replace other heavier materials in engine components thus improving the thrust to weight of the engine. But, PMR-15 has a major drawback related to high safety standards that are needed during processing. The implementation of these controls during processing resulted in huge costs to the industry. This led to the development of a new polyimide high temperature resin system called RP-46 at NASA Langley research center. RP-46 has excellent thermal and mechanical properties comparable to PMR-15 and is safer to handle due to the absence of the lethal MDA monomer, a carcinogen. This research investigates the issues related to processing of RP-46 resin system using the Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding (VARTM) process, a cost effective method for manufacturing composite materials. The entire process is setup keeping in consideration the requirement of high temperature environments for processing of RP-46. A number of initial trials helped understand the dynamics of the process and identify critical factors and key parameters. The various laminates that were made were tested for mechanical properties (ASTM D3039 - Tensile strength and modulus) and thermal properties (Dynamic Mechanical Analysis, Thermal Mechanical Analysis, Thermal Gravimetric Analysis) were performed and the results were compared with RP-46 samples made using autoclave processing. Although the VARTM laminates had issues related to void contents and the release of volatiles during the infusion stage of the process, the VARTM process was found to be feasible to make composites with RP-46. / A Thesis submitted to the Department of Industrial Engineering in partial

Continuous Buckypaper Manufacturing Process: Process Investigation and ImprovementUnknown Date (has links)
Carbon nanotubes have excellent electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties as determined theoretically and experimentally. Their properties make them great candidates for use in a number of applications ranging from lightning strike protection for airplanes to computer heat sink. However, carbon nanotubes are incredibly small, with diameters as small as 1nm and just a few micrometers long. The nanoscale size makes carbon nanotubes impractical to be used individually for many industrial purposes, thus methods have been developed to fabricate macroscale networks of carbon nanotubes. The carbon nanotube networks, also called Buckypaper, have showed mechanical, thermal and electrical properties inferior to those of individual nanotubes. Extensive work has been conducted to develop and optimize suitable production methods of producing high quality Buckypaper and enhance their properties. Many approaches are capable of producing a carbon nanotube network, but most are not able to scale up for industrial applications due to size and production rate limitations. This research focuses on two aspects of Buckypaper manufacturing improvements. The first is to test 90 mm samples of Buckypaper disks to determine the impact of each processing parameter on the quality and properties. Statistic analysis was used to reveal the effect of processing parameters. Utilizing these results, a long sample of Buckypaper was produced and examined for property and quality consistency along the sample length, using modified customer-made continuous filter devices. Additionally, long samples with larger width were produced to demonstrate production rate of continuous Buckypaper manufacturing. Through this research it was found that the electrical conductivity of the Buckypaper was affected positively by an increase in sonication pressure. Additionally, increases in pressure and increase in power of sonication led to an increase of Buckypaper strength. Strength and electrical properties of the continuous Buckypaper were considered consistent throughout the length. These results provide essential understanding of the continuous Buckypaper manufacturing process. / A Thesis submitted to the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering in

Lean översättning och överlevnad : En fallstudie på Scania ABSamaan, Johan, Akrawi, Josef January 2019 (has links)
Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka hur Scania har gått tillväga vid översättning av Lean samt hur organisationen håller denna reform vid liv. Det började på sent 80-tal då Scania hade hög personalomsättning som ledde till sjunkande kvalite och missnöjda kunder. Ledningen på Scania skickade en grupp till Toyota för att ta inspiration och kunskap om hur Toyota arbetade med Lean. Vilket resulterade i att Scania påbörjade sitt första Lean projekt. Det första Lean projektet utvecklades vidare vilket resulterade till slut i Scania production system som är Scanias version av Lean. Ända sedan 90-talet har Scania arbetet utifrån Lean och för att det aldrig ska prioriteras bort och glömmas bort har Scania en del metoder som de arbetar med för att ständigt hålla Lean vid liv. Bland annat punkt ronder, standardiserat ledarskap och ständig utveckling av Scaniahuset som är en illustration av Scania production system. Studien är en fallstudie och genomfördes genom semistrukturerade intervjuer på en tillverkande avdelning på Scania, även interna dokument analyserades i syfte att få en mer nyanserad uppfattning av Scaniahusets delar och punktronder. Vi har utgått ifrån översättningsteori samt tidigare forskning om Lean vid utformning av frågebatteri samt vid analysering av den insamlade data. / The purpose of this study is to examine how Scania has proceeded in the translation of Lean and how the organization keeps this reform alive. It started in the late 80s when Scania had high staff turnover that led to declining quality and customer satisfaction. The management at Scania sent a group to Toyota for inspiration and acquire knowledge about how Toyota worked with Lean. This resulted in Scania starting its first Lean project. The first Lean project was further developed, which ultimately resulted in the Scania production system, which is Scania's version of Lean. Ever since the 90s, Scania’s work has been Lean based and for it to never be deprioritized and forgotten, Scania has some methods that they work with to keep Lean alive. For instance, rounds, standardized leadership and constant development of the Scania house which is an illustration of Scania production system. This case study was conducted through semi-structured interviews at a manufacturing department at Scania. Internal documents were also analyzed in order to gain a more nuanced view of Scania’s various parts and rounds. We, when designing our questions and in the analysis of the collected data, have our basis in a translation theory and previous research on Lean.

O objetivo deste trabalho é demonstrar por que a cogeração não se desenvolve no Brasil, mesmo apresentando-se como alternativa para produção de eletricidade. Entretanto existem vários estímulos por parte do Estado para a implantação de grandes termoelétricas no país. Será apresentada a análise dos processos de cogeração, envolvendo: as alternativas tecnológicas, a viabilidade econômica, e as questões ambientais, chegando-se a um quadro indicando a sensibilidade aos diversos parâmetros econômicos que fazem parte dos projetos de cogeração. Serão mostrados cenários com a visão de futuro, indicando diferentes opções que permitam o crescimento do mercado de energia no Brasil, de uma forma mais segura. No momento em que o Brasil passa por profundas mudanças no setor energético, incluindo a necessidade da expansão do parque gerador e considerando que parte importante dessa expansão será através de grandes centrais termoelétricas, torna-se importante apresentar uma alternativa de produção de eletricidade, no Brasil ainda pouco explorada, que é a cogeração. Este trabalho irá mostrar que com maior incentivo aos projetos de cogeração, através de uma política energética nacional adequada, se pode produzir parcela importante da energia elétrica para o atendimento das necessidades crescentes da sociedade brasileira, com menor impacto ambiental e econômico, refletindo em menor custo final da energia produzida. / The aim of this paper is to show why the CHP does not develop in Brazil, even presenting itself as an alternative to producing electricity. However there are several incentives from the state for the deployment of large power plants in the country. You will see the analysis of cogeneration processes, involving: the technological alternatives, the economic viability and environmental issues, coming to a table showing the sensitivity to various economic parameters that are part of cogeneration projects. Scenarios are shown with the vision of the future, indicating different options that allow for growth of the energy market in Brazil, a more secure way. At the moment Brazil is going through profound changes in the energy sector, including the need for expansion of generating facilities and considering that an important part of this expansion will be through large power plants, it is important to present an alternative electricity production in Brazil still little explored, which is cogeneration. This paper will show that with greater encouragement to cogeneration projects through an adequate national energy policy, it can produce substantial amount of electricity to meet the growing needs of Brazilian society, with less environmental impact and economic development, reflecting a lesser cost final energy produced.
