Incentive, Subsidy, Penalty Mechanisms And Pooled, Unpooled Allocation Of Production Capacity In Service Parts Management Systems

Atak, Erman 01 July 2011 (has links) (PDF)
In this thesis, two systems are analyzed in order to gain insight to the following issues: (i) Effect of incentive, subsidy and penalty designs on decentralized system, (ii) effect of using production facility as pooled capacity (pooled system) and dedicated capacity (unpooled system) on capacity utilization and system profit. Regarding the first issue, three models are defined / decentralized model, centralized model and decentralized model with incentive, subsidy, penalty designs. In all models, there are two dealers and one item is under consideration and lateral transshipments are allowed. Dealers operate with four inventory level decision (strategies) that consists of base stock level, rationing level, transshipment request level and customer rejection level. Under the decentralized system, a dealer sets its operating strategy according to the strategy of the other dealer and maximizes its own infinite horizon discounted expected profit. In the centralized system, a central authority (say manufacturer) exists, which considers the system-wide infinite horizon discounted expected profit, and makes all decisions. Under decentralized system with incentive, subsidy, penalty designs, manufacturer tries different designs on decentralized system namely revenue sharing, holding cost subsidy, request rejection penalty, transportation cost subsidy and commission subsidy in order to v align decentralized system with centralized system. According to the results obtained, this alignment works best with nearly 40% revenue sharing percentage, low rejection penalty, high transportation cost subsidy under low transportation cost and commission subsidy under very low or very high commissions. Holding cost subsidy, on the other hand, is not a good strategy since it declines decentralized system profit. Considering the second issue, two systems are examined / pooled system and unpooled system. Both systems are centrally managed. In the pooled system, all capacity is dynamically allocated to either dealer considering maximization of system profit. In the unpooled system, capacity is shared among dealers and dealers are always allocated same percentage of the capacity. Infinite horizon average expected profit is maximized in both systems. The dealer having lower holding cost is allocated higher capacity in both pooled and unpooled system / however, exceptions exist in the unpooled system under low arrival rate. Highrevenue dealer is always allocated higher capacity in both pooled and unpooled system. Arrival rate affects both systems such that total capacity utilization increases with increasing arrival rate. From the profit point of view, pooled system has great advantage under low demand rate in general.

Método estruturado para aplicação das técnicas de aumento da capacidade de produção de recursos gargalo em células de manufatura / Structured method for the application of techniques to increase bottleneck resource production capacity in manufacturing cells

Martins Junior, José Carlos 31 August 2009 (has links)
The purpose of this work is structuring a sequence of application of a series of production capacity increase techniques mentioned in literature on an equipment bottleneck. This sequence must be placed into practice to increase production capacity of manufacturing lines in lean manufacturing environments. The work was developed through the analysis of the techniques have been found to increase equipment production capacity (applied research) and a sequential procedure to techniques application (action research). This sequential procedure is followed up until the improvement required production capacity is reached. The sequential procedure developed was applied in one line of cellular arrangement in an auto parts company. Research methodologies used were the applied research and research-action. It was possible to observe that matters most contributed to the foundations of this work were the theory of constraints and lean production, in particular the process of focus on five stages of the theory of constraints. It was possible to identify the need of using this sequential procedure when production capacity is insufficient to support the customer demand as when a cost reduction strategy imposes an inability to support the customer demand. Future work can explore the different number of using of each of the techniques presented for each type of equipment. These equipment types are related to complexity, cost, etc. New techniques may arise and be attached to the sequential procedure. This structured way of elevating the restriction in this case the bottleneck manufacturing could be used in different environments works by professionals responsible for these actions for improvement.

Valentim, Thiago Leal Sümmchen January 2017 (has links)
In a competitive and dynamic market, it is imperative that the operations management systems focus increasingly on the pursuit of economic efficiency. The knowledge regarding the production capacity of a company thrusts the decision making process in the direction of operation performance optimization and the increase in profitability, allowing the company to position itself correctly facing its market and to find the correct way to meet its demand. The theoretical discussion regarding capacity and its related concepts traditionally revolves around technical definitions, that deal with physical restraints of the productive system and covers notions of volume and lead times, albeit not adding the notion of the economic value linked to the production effort the system can generate. In this context, the present work focuses on the theme of production capacity analysis and management. Starting from the identified gap of the lack of consideration of economic aspects in the context of production capacity studies and the absence of a structured model to this end, that merges the technical e economic view in a unified model. The main goal of this dissertation is to propose a systematic approach that supports an organization’s production capacity management and analysis, focusing on economic aspects. To that end, it builds on the application of the Unity of Production Effort method (UPE) to support the technical and economical standardization of the productive process, as well as the use of Linear Programming in the mathematical modelling of the problem. The systematic approach is validated through its application on a real case study, and the results confirm the perception that a model that integrates technical and economic aspects to capacity management is more adherent to the reality of the modern company, and the contraposition of said aspects allow for a more robust capacity management.

Bittencourt, Sergio Fernandes January 2010 (has links)
The production capacity sizing is a key process for companies’ success, even more if the organization is involved in a high seasonal environment. However, this process is often not fully discussed by the organizations for decision-making. When it is needed to review the production capacity sizing due to demand predictions, most companies act directly upon the quantity of equipment and redesign the process or, in cases the demand is higher than the production capacity and the company is unprepared to invest to increase capacity the decision is to cut sales. Instead of this, companies should consider production capacity sizing as a manageable, in a systemic way, reliable and robust process. The decision-making for this process should be influenced by scenarios definitions, economic and qualitative analysis. This work presents a method to help the economic sizing of production capacity for companies that are involved in seasonal environment. This method includes a discussion about capacity sizing considering four important phases: identification and exploration, analysis and proposals of alternatives, actions and implementation of the best scenario chosen and, finally evaluation and observations from the implemented scenario. In each phase, steps and activities are defined and illustrated through an application at a machining department of an agricultural machinery maker company. The application of this method at the machining area of the company resulted in a robust and reliable process implemented to help in decisionmaking when it is needed to review the production capacity based on demand predictions. The method brought benefits to organize the information and practice decision-making to choose the best scenario based on economic analysis, however the method proved to be very sensitive to the accuracy of demand predictions, which points, in future applications, to a necessary flexibility of this variable by conducting sensitivity analysis.

Fulfillment of Rush Customer Orders under Limited Capacity

Xiong, M.H., Tor, Shu Beng, Khoo, L.P., Bhatnagar, Rohit 01 1900 (has links)
Customer demand fulfillment is the business process within a company that determines how the customer demand is fulfilled. A rush order is the last minute customer order after the production plan of a company has been concluded. For these rush orders, appropriate and reasonable response is imperative as it could put strain on customer relationship and services. A good and positive response could help the company to build and retain its market share in today’s highly competitive markets. A model aims at decreasing the product inventory cost is proposed in this paper. In this model, the prioritized fulfillment sequence of rush customer demands can be searched in terms of the product inventory cost. The paper focuses on two main issues: the available-to-promise (ATP) based fulfillment ability and the prioritized fulfillment of customer demands. For ATP based fulfillment, a dynamic bill-of-material (BOM) is proposed to handle the complicated issues of BOM, BOM explosion and production capacity. By means of dynamic BOM, material availability as well as production capacity can be taken into consideration simultaneously and efficiently. Two methods, mathematical optimization and heuristic algorithm, are constructed and elaborated on in the second issue. The proposed model allows companies to prioritize customer rush orders in terms of product inventory cost. / Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA)
