A Proof-of-Concept for Using PVS and Maxima to Support Relational CalculusNguyen, Huong Thi Thu 22 September 2006 (has links)
<p> Mechanized mathematics systems, especially Theorem Provers (TP) and Computer
Algebra Systems (CAS), can play a very helpful role in handling relational calculus. Computer Algebra Systems help to automate tedious symbolic computations. However, they lack the ability to make sophisticated derivations of logical formulas. Correspondingly, a Theorem Prover is powerful in deriving the truth-value of a logical formula. Nevertheless, it is not suitable for dealing with symbolic expressions.</p> <p> The main goal for our research is to investigate the automation of relational calculus using existing mechanized mathematics technologies. Particularly, we elaborated a heuristic that enables the assignment of tasks to PVS and Maxima to help perform relational calculus. As well we built a proof-of-concept tool that supports this calculus.</p> <p> To fulfill our objective, we adopted the following steps:
1. Investigated and evaluated the characteristics and capabilities of TPs and CASs. This step led us to select PVS and Maxima as the tools to be used by our system.
2. Explored a strategy that governs setting tasks to PVS and Maxima in order to perform relational calculus. Then, we propose a task assignment heuristic based on this strategy.
3. Designed and built a proof-of-concept tool that makes use of PVS and Maxima to help perform relational calculus.
4. Assessed our tool by using it to handle some illustrative examples of operations on concrete relations.</p> <p> In our work, relations are given by their characteristic predicates. We assume as well that predicates that are provided to our proof-of-concept tool are in a Disjunctive Normal Form. We adopt a linear notation for the representation of propositions, quantifications, and expressions. GATA-Assistenten – En konceptvalidering av röststyrning i GATAYürek, Markus January 2019 (has links)
GATA is a web-application used by truckdrivers transporting timber from assigned pick-up places in the forest to specific receiving locations. GATA is used to facilitate and ease the navigation, communication and planning behind each delivery. This create situations where GATA needs to be used while driving, this is both dangerous and illegal. To solve this problem a voice-controlled proof-of-concept application for the most common features used during driving was developed and given the name GATA-Assistenten. The application was designed with a concept of having a few basic features built upon a stable platform. Dialogflow was chosen as tool to create the AI-voice control and to get it integrated with Google Assistant. Two tracks were created, one for drivers to change the estimated time of arrival and one to get the status on the receiving sites. According to statics at least 0,5% of all traffic related accidents can be directly contributed to interacting with communication devices, this is without taking the unrecorded cases into account. The conclusion based on these statistics is that GATA-Assistenten can not only help avoid accidents but also save lives. If a company wants to invest in safety, it is paramount to use voice-control, however it is also important to do research and development on new technologies to find out and fix the causes behind accidents. / GATA är en webbapplikation som används av lastbilschaufförer vid frakt av timmer från skogarna till mottagningsplatser för att lättare navigera, kommunicera och planera körningar på uppdrag av SCA. Det innebär att chaufförerna ibland behöver använda GATA under färd, något som inte bara kan vara en trafikfara utan även är olagligt. För att lösa detta problem skall ett proof-of-concept på röststyrning utvecklas för några av de vanligaste funktionerna som används under färd i GATA. Röststyrningsapplikationen som fick namnet GATA-Assistenten designades utifrån ett koncept om att ha få grundläggande funktioner byggt på en stabil plattform. Dialogflow valdes som verktyg för att skapa en AI-baserad röststyrning med integration via Google Assistant. GATA- Assistenten bestod slutligen av två huvudspår, det ena för att ändra den av chauffören angivna ankomsttiden till mottagningsplatsen och det andra för att ta reda på aviseringsläge på mottagningsplatserna. Enligt statistik är minst 0,5% av alla olyckor direkt orsakade av en förares interaktion med någon form av kommunikationsutrustning, detta utan att ta mörkertalet i beaktande. Slutsatsen som kan tas av detta är att GATA-Assistenten kan hjälpa till att undvika olyckor och rädda liv. Vill ett företag satsa på säkerhet är röststyrning ett måste, om det finns en nollvision kring olyckor i trafiken måste dock mer forskning och utveckling läggas på ny teknik för att ta reda på samt åtgärda orsakerna bakom alla olyckor.

The use of stars as a radiation source for ground-based ozone remote-sensing instruments is explored and an automated prototype instrument that measures absorption due to atmospheric ozone in stellar spectra has been designed, implemented and tested. <p> This work represents the proof-of-concept development of a low-cost, low dispersion slitless imaging spectrometer that measures Chappuis-band absorption in stellar spectra. The work presented here progresses from the initial concept to a functional calibrated prototype that is capable of nightly automated observations of visible-band spectra from mid-magnitude stars. The design and calibration of the prototype and subsequent data collection and analysis are presented. <p>A slitless imaging spectrometer has been developed and integrated with a commercial self-pointing telescope and an astronomical imager. A relative intensity calibration and the development of a dynamic wavelength calibration scheme, necessitated by the slitless nature of the instrument, is presented. The calibrated prototype has been used to collect several data sets of stellar spectra, and it is shown that the instrument can detect Chappuis absorption in stellar spectra. Several issues with both the concept and design that must be addressed in further development of the prototype are identified.

From Industry Specific ERP to Supply Chains ERP¡GAn Application of focused differenciation strategySung, Mao-Lin 17 July 2002 (has links)
In recent years, the trend toward globalization has given rise to rigorous competition for market shares. Businesses have faced the stern demand to swiftly respond to changes in market conditions. They must keep up with environmental situations inside and outside industry, fully integrate various resources of the enterprise, and ponder how to effectively use business resources. Therefore, ERP (enterprise resource planning) systems that integrate the internal value chains of enterprise have received special attention.
It is an undisputed fact that an ERP system can integrate internal resources of an enterprise to create for it an overall advantage, improve the flow and elevate the response effectiveness of the enterprise, upgrade information system, and respond to customers¡¦ satisfaction of supply chain management. However, the universal ERP system that is adopted by most enterprises is either costly or difficult to maintain. Moreover, the universal ERP system usually fails to consider special needs of different industries. Therefore, how to ensure a rapid, saving, and effective success through the implementation of ERP systems constitutes the largest challenge faced by enterprises that use such systems. In view of this, this study investigated, from the perspective of ERP supply chain effectiveness of the ¡§differentiation focus strategy¡¨ and the ¡§bowling pin model strategy,¡¨ the impact of the adoption of industry-specific ERP systems on ERP software manufacturers and enterprises that have introduced such a system. Besides, the study used case study approach to conduct a field survey of ERP software manufacturers that have implemented industry-specific ERP system strategy and of four textile and PCB manufacturers that have introduced industry-specific ERP systems with a view to understanding operating models in which industry-specific ERP systems have been successfully introduced and implemented.
Through the analysis of this study, it was found that:
(1)ERP information manufacturers that adopt industry-specific ERP strategy locating conform to Michael E. Porter¡¦s competitive strategy and differentiation focus strategy, and at the same time verify the bowling pin model theory of Geoffrey A. Moor that technology adopts life cycle. Information manufacturers can enjoy vertical profit-base market advantages of industry-specific ERP and thus avoid competition within industry. As they focus on their specialized field, they not only can strengthen ERP¡¦s professional system functions but also can elevate their effectiveness in follow-up service and maintenance, leading to the reduction of operating costs. From cases of ERP software manufacturers, it was also found that, in areas that special industries cluster, the value of industry-specific ERP in such markets is enlarged.
(2)From the perspective of developing industry-specific ERP, after a preliminary development method is used to direct a user to put up concrete industrial characteristic demands and flow, more friendly and suitable operating systems are specified. After being examined and used by a second user, systems are re-examined, revised, and strengthened. After being introduced by a third user and verified and implemented, such systems can become mature, standard industry-specific ERP package systems.
(3)From the perspective of enterprise users, adopting the proof of concept method is more practical, accurate, and promising in selecting and evaluating suitable, correct ERP systems. This method can help estimate the outcome after introduction and make it easier to evaluate benefits, for example, keeping project flow schedule and costs under control, implementation and simulation of new enterprise flow schedule.
(4)Each industry has professional knowledge and characteristics specific to it. For example, in the case of PCB industry, use rate of base plate material and design and management of engineering data are core professional knowledge of lumber industry. In the case of textile industry, analysis of fabrics, management of characteristics of semi-finished fabrics, integration and automation of process are critical functions essential to competitiveness of this industry. A universal ERP system cannot take care of unique characteristics of various industries. Therefore, only an industry-specific ERP that is specialized in and designed to meet characteristics of a concerned industry can perfectly satisfy the core professional operation of the industry.
(5)Because industry-specific ERP systems set the best model of business flow and are concise and suitable, they produce more rapid effectiveness, less impact on organization adjustment, and require smaller investments after being introduced into a business.
In view of the preceding findings, the study concluded that the adoption of industry-specific ERP can solidly, effectively, and accurately achieve purposes of ERP systems and can ensure the achievement of potential benefits. At the same time, information manufacturers can obtain vertical profit-base market, enlarging the effect of overall supply value chains.

Environmental Technology and its Role in the Search for Urban Environmental Sustainability : The Dynamics of AdaptationMejía-Dugand, Santiago January 2015 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to analyze the role that environmental technology plays in the solution of environmental problems in cities, and discuss models and conditions that can facilitate the processes of selection, implementation and use of environmental technologies in and by cities. The technological component is perhaps one of the most important characteristics of modern cities. The dependence of humans on technology is in most cases a given, something that is not ignored in the sustainability debate. The development and implementation of new, “better” technologies is however hindered by the inertia that modern societies have and the influence of the dominant systems (e.g. economic systems based on growth, extraction of natural resources and environmental disturbance). So-called environmental technologies are not always able to efficiently compete against other technologies that are embedded in societies by lock-in mechanisms, e.g. learning by doing and using, scale economies, subsidies, and network externalities. Even with the “right” technologies, an exclusively techno-centered approach to sustainability can result in other problems, and it might reduce the sustainability debate and the cities’ role in it to discussions of an administrative nature. The actual role of local actors and their agency must be also considered in the models and frameworks directed at understanding sustainability transition processes. It is thus important to analyze the dynamics of technology selection, implementation, use and diffusion in cities from a stakeholders’ perspective as well. Not only is the availability of technology of interest for understanding the impact it has on the environment, but also the intensity of its use. This has resulted in increased attention from politicians and scholars on the so-called global cities (e.g. London, New York, Tokyo), which are characterized by their intense use of e.g. transport, security and surveillance, and information and communication. Paradigmatic models of sustainability can however be contested when the role of local actors, power and agency are considered in detail and not isolated from the context. Some authors recognize the need to address what they call “ordinary cities”, since focusing on the cities’ comparative level of development (be it political, economic or technological) hinders the possibility of bidirectional learning. In the end, sustainability is a “collective good,” which means that it is in everyone’s interest to coordinate efforts and learn from the best practices, regardless of where they come from. This thesis focuses on “ordinary cities,” and promises to offer conclusions that can contribute to a better understanding of how societies can learn from each other and how environmental technologies can have deeper and better results when implemented in different contexts than the ones where they were developed. Two questions related to the process of environmental-technology adaptation are addressed in this thesis: How do technology adaptation processes for the solution of urban environmental problems take place in cities? And how do cities benefit from environmental technologies? It is found that environmental technology is not only seen as a solution to environmental problems in cities, but every day more as a component of strategies to attract attention and compete for resources in national and international markets. Cities have different adaptation and learning strategies. This means that technological solutions have to be flexible and adaptive to local conditions, and allow for vernacular knowledge and past experiences to enrich their performance by facilitating their connection to existing systems. Learning between cities is important and necessary for global sustainability transitions. When it comes to environmental technology, this process is facilitated by strong proof-of-concept projects. Such projects are not only expected to be able to show their technical ability to solve a problem, but must also offer contextual connections to the problems faced by interested cities or potential implementers.

Determining non-urgent emergency room use factors from primary care data and natural language processing: a proof of conceptSt-Maurice, Justin 28 March 2012 (has links)
The objective of this study was to discover biopsychosocial concepts from primary care that were statistically related to inappropriate emergency room use by using natural language processing tools. De-identified free text was extracted from a clinic in Guelph, Ontario and analyzed with MetaMap and GATE. Over 10 million concepts were extracted from 13,836 patient records. There were 77 codes that fell within the realm of biopsychosocial, were very statistically significant (p < 0.001) and had an OR > 2.0. Thematically, these codes involved mental health and pain related biopsychosocial concepts. Similar to other literature, pain and mental health problems are seen to be important factors of inappropriate emergency room use. Despite sources error in the NLP procedure, the study demonstrates the feasibly of combining natural language processing and primary care data to analyze the issue of inappropriate emergency room use. This technique could be used to analyze other, more complex problems. / Graduate

Moving Target Defense Using Live Migration of Docker ContainersJanuary 2017 (has links)
abstract: Today the information technology systems have addresses, software stacks and other configuration remaining unchanged for a long period of time. This paves way for malicious attacks in the system from unknown vulnerabilities. The attacker can take advantage of this situation and plan their attacks with sufficient time. To protect our system from this threat, Moving Target Defense is required where the attack surface is dynamically changed, making it difficult to strike.
In this thesis, I incorporate live migration of Docker container using CRIU (checkpoint restore) for moving target defense. There are 460K Dockerized applications, a 3100% growth over 2 years[1]. Over 4 billion containers have been pulled so far from Docker hub. Docker is supported by a large and fast growing community of contributors and users. As an example, there are 125K Docker Meetup members worldwide. As we see industry adapting to Docker rapidly, a moving target defense solution involving containers is beneficial for being robust and fast. A proof of concept implementation is included for studying performance attributes of Docker migration.
The detection of attack is using a scenario involving definitions of normal events on servers. By defining system activities, and extracting syslog in centralized server, attack can be detected via extracting abnormal activates and this detection can be a trigger for the Docker migration. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Computer Science 2017

Wooden Photovoltaic Module Frames : Proof of Concept, Life Cycle Assessment and Cost AnalysisSinger, Tanyew January 2021 (has links)
To mitigate climate change and to achieve global carbon neutrality, the expansion of renewable energy sources is of paramount importance. In this context, photovoltaics (PV) are widely regarded as one of the most promising technologies to lead the transformation towards decarbonized energy systems. However, the manufacturing of PV systems is associated with initial greenhouse gas emissions linked to the procurement of PV components. Therefore, current research focuses on minimizing initial emissions to improve the overall environmental performance of PV systems. Since previous research suggests that conventional aluminum module frames contain a significant amount of embodied carbon, this study investigates a possible material substitution with wood as alternative frame material to lower the overall carbon footprint of PV modules. To test the technical feasibility of PV modules with wooden frames, a proof of concept (POC) is conducted using wood types that exhibit necessary characteristics regarding their mechanical properties and durability. Guided by the finite element method and preliminary testing, a novel frame design is conceived, and PV modules with wooden frames are realized. The prototypes are put to extensive testing, in which the mechanical stability is examined, and weathering effects are investigated in an outdoor installation. Furthermore, a life cycle assessment (LCA) is carried out to quantify potential benefits of wooden compared to aluminum frames regarding their global warming potential and other environmental impact categories. Lastly, this study compares the economic performance of wooden PV module frames with aluminum frames and considers possible optimizations in the value chain of wooden frames. POC results show that PV modules with wooden frames - in line with industrial standards - are feasible, yet mechanical stability and durability vary depending on the type of wood and overall design. LCA results suggest that wooden frames exhibit invariably better environmental performance in all impact categories although a reduced module lifetime may impair the overall life cycle performance. In regard to cost efficiency, wooden frames are more costly than aluminum frames, yet financial incentives or subsidies may make low-carbon materials more competitive in the future. It can be concluded that wooden PV module frames may be a promising alternative to standard aluminum frames provided that the overall lifetime is identical. Thus, additional studies are required to analyze the long-term performance and to identify areas of application for modules with wooden frames, for instance in the building-integrated PV sector. Lastly, further research is needed to explore additional utilizations of wood in PV systems such as in ground and roof mounting structures.
