The influence of container shape and color cues on consumer product risk perception and precautionary intentSerig, Elizabeth May January 1999 (has links)
Four experiments were carried out to examine the extent to which the container shape and color of a consumer product package influence hazard perceptions of that product. The experiments further examined the extent to which consumer product hazard perception influenced consumer precautionary intent. The first experiment demonstrated that participants could design product packages signaling the identity and potential hazard level of the contents. Experiments 2 and 3 validated the results of Experiment 1. Experiment 3 further introduced the concept of precautionary intent; participants were more likely to express precautionary intent for those products perceived as being more hazardous. Experiment 4 examined whether these stated intentions would be acted upon when participants were asked to actually interact with a product; it was found that participants were more likely to engage in precautionary behaviors than had been indicated in Experiment 3.

Effects of sleep schedule on training of executive function skillsChien, Rosanne Wei-Ling 28 October 2014 (has links)

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of sleep schedule on the learning trajectories, acquisition, and consolidation for preschoolers participating in a training program targeting attention. This study expanded on current literature by examining the effect of training attention skills and focused on sleep in preschoolers using an experimental design. Explorations of how changes in bedtime play a role in training attention in preschoolers were made.

Sleep is important for daytime functioning and sleep loss has many implications, including risk for poorer academic performance and learning. Early intervention and preventive measures addressing executive functions can help children better manage their behaviors in work and play situations. Studies have shown that attention skills in children can be trained. This study expanded on current literature by assessing the generalization of attention training to other executive function skills, such as inhibition, cognitive flexibility, and working memory. Research has mainly focused on inhibition and working memory, and more recently, attention. To hopefully improve understanding of the attention skills in preschoolers, an additional variable of sleep restriction was evaluated.

Findings indicated, contrary to initial prediction, that children who were sleep restricted performed better during post-test assessment compared to children who followed their typical bedtime schedules. Sleep restricted preschoolers performed better in all executive function areas that were assessed in this study, which included inhibition, cognitive flexibility, working memory, and attention. Findings revealed that acute sleep restriction in preschoolers increased the effects of attention training. Differences in findings from this study and other studies are addressed.

Childbirth as a profound experience| Exploring narrative and image of experiences during birthSchwartz, Jennifer A. 11 February 2015 (has links)

This study is an exploration into the profound, life-altering experiences that a small sampling of mothers had while giving birth. The primary question addressed is "What is the nature of experiences that can occur for the mother during childbirth?" A group of 15 mothers in the United States was asked to share the experiences they had during childbirth, highlighting those elements that they define as profound, spiritual, transformational, and/or empowering.

The research was conducted as a narrative and visual arts inquiry, using an initial survey, semi-structured interviews, and an art creation process to produce visual expressions of experiences. Also included is an autobiographical element created from the researcher's experiences of childbirth. While the individual experiences varied, the stories revealed eight general themes that are explored using elements of the narratives and a coding of the art images, resulting in several trends. Through narrative and art, the individual experiences of the mothers are shared, emergent themes are analyzed, and a larger picture of profound childbirth experiences is shown. The nature of profound experiences during birth is highlighted in this study, as are the universal elements of birth.

Breaker of the trance| The warrior as a means to heal from traumaSmith, Laura Lynn 31 December 2014 (has links)

When an individual has suffered from repeated abuses during childhood, an intrapsychic conflict arises in which inner persecutory figures terrorize other, more vulnerable aspects of the personality (Kalsched, 1996). The aim of this dissertation is to explore how the archetype of the Self, an organizing and integrating principle within the psyche (Jung, 1952/1954), can activate within the adult trauma survivor the aggressive energies of the warrior as a means to mitigate the inner persecution that arises out of traumatic experience.

Norse myth and the epic poem Beowulf, both rich in war and warring, are used as the hermeneutical texts to illustrate the hypothesis regarding the function of the Self and the warrior in the face of trauma. Mythic figures such as Odin—as the Self, Thor and Beowulf—as warriors, and Loki, Grendel, and Grendel's mother—as inner persecutors, demonstrate the interplay between the Self-warrior-inner persecutory triad that can evolve out of traumatic experience. Texts on trauma, the archetype of the warrior, and the experiences of the modern warrior provide further hermeneutical material for the research.

Findings from this study indicate that archetypal warrior energies have the capacity to lessen the influence of negative internal forces within the trauma survivor, effectively breaking a form of trance commonly induced by the experience of cumulative childhood trauma. Results demonstrate that the warrior archetype has a maturational arc. In its mature form, the warrior is capable of forming cooperative relationships with formerly negative inner aspects, once the warrior's efforts have softened the impact of those aspects upon the ego. Surprisingly, studied texts also reveal that former inner persecutors, once they are brought into greater relatedness with the whole of the psyche, contain within them numerous gifts for the benefit of the overall personality.

This dissertation infers that any subject under investigation may benefit from the rich material found within the study of Norse myth and the archetype of the warrior, both topics of which practitioners within the field of depth psychology have generally overlooked.

Keywords: trauma, child abuse, warrior, trickster, Jung, Norse myth, Beowulf.
