Cascaded Digital Refinement for Intrinsic Evolvable Hardware

Intrinsic evolution of reconfigurable hardware is sought to solve computational problems using the intrinsic processing behavior of System-on-Chip (SoC) platforms. SoC devices combine capabilities of analog and digital embedded components within a reconfigurable fabric under software control. A new technique is developed for these fabrics that leverages the digital resources' enhanced accuracy and signal refinement capability to improve circuit performance of the analog resources' which are providing low power processing and high computation rates. In particular, Differential Digital Correction (DDC) is developed utilizing an error metric computed from the evolved analog circuit to reconfigure the digital fabric thereby enhancing precision of analog computations. The approach developed herein, Cascaded Digital Refinement (CaDR), explores a multi-level strategy of utilizing DDC for refining intrinsic evolution of analog computational circuits to construct building blocks, known as Constituent Functional Blocks (CFBs). The CFBs are developed in a cascaded sequence followed by digital evolution of higher-level control of these CFBs to build the final solution for the larger circuit at-hand. One such platform, Cypress PSoC-5LP was utilized to realize solutions to ordinary differential equations by first evolving various powers of the independent variable followed by that of their combinations to emulate mathematical series-based solutions for the desired range of values. This is shown to enhance accuracy and precision while incurring lower computational energy and time overheads. The fitness function for each CFB being evolved is different from the fitness function that is defined for the overall problem.

Low-Order Controllers for Time-Delay Systems : an Analytical Approach / Contrôleur d'ordre réduit pour des systèmes à retard : une approche analytique

Les travaux de recherche présentés dans cette thèse concernent des contributions à l’étude de stabilité des systèmes linéaires à retards avec contrôleurs d’ordre réduit. Cette mémoire est partagée en trois parties.La première partie est axée sur l’étude des systèmes linéaires à retard mono-entré /mono-sortie, bouclées avec un contrôleur de type PID. Inspiré par l’approche géométrique développée par Gu et al. Nous avons proposé une méthode analytique pour trouver la région (ou les régions) de tous les contrôleurs de type PID stabilisant pour le système à retard. Basée sur cette même approche, on a développé un algorithme pour calculer le dégrée de fragilité d’un contrôleur donné de type PID (PI, PD et PID).La deuxième partie de la thèse est axée sur l’étude de stabilité sous une approche NCS (pour son acronyme en anglais : Networked Control System). Plus précisément, nous avons d’abord étudié le problème de la stabilisation en tenant compte des retards induit par le réseau et les effets induits par la période d’échantillonnages. Pour mener une telle analyse nous avons adopté une approche basée sur la théorie des perturbations. Finalement, dans la troisième partie de la thèse nous abordons certains problèmes concernant le comportement des zéros d’une certaine classe de systèmes échantillonnés mono-entré /mono-sortie. Plus précisément, étant donné un système à temps continu, on obtient les intervalles d’échantillonnage garantissant l’invariance du nombre de zéros instables dans chaque intervalle. Pour développer cette analyse, nous adoptons une approche basée sur la perturbation aux valeurs propres. / The research work presented in this thesis concern to the stability analysis of linear time-delay systems with low-order controllers. Struktura a aproximace reálných rovinných algebraických křivek / Structure and approximation of real planar algebraic curves

Finding a topologically accurate approximation of a real planar algebraic curve is a classic problem in Computer Aided Geometric Design. Algorithms describing the topology search primarily the singular points and are usually based on algebraic techniques applied directly to the curve equation. In this thesis we propose a more geometric approach, taking into account the subsequent high-precision approximation. Our algorithm is primarily based on the identification and approximation of smooth monotonous curve segments, which can in certain cases cross the singularities of the curve. To find the characteristic points we use not only the primary algebraic equation of the curve but also, and more importantly, its implicit support function representation. Using the rational Puiseux series, we describe local properties of curve branches at the points of interest and exploit them to find their connectivity. The support function representation is also used for an approximation of the segments. In this way, we obtain an approximate graph of the entire curve with several nice properties.
