Living sites : rethinking the social trajectory of the Tophane area in Istanbul

Pelen Karelse, Övgü January 2015 (has links)
The aim of this research is to account for the life of an industrial site and to show the dynamism of the site by exploring what its trajectory in space and time can tell us about socio-economic and political tendencies occurring during its lifespan. This research will focus on the micro life of a particular industrial site in order to grasp the rhythm of societal change including its cultural and political overtones, and to explore the strategies of transformation of industrial sites in contemporary societies. In addition, this research aims to contribute to a better understanding of the concepts of waterfront regeneration and urban transformation by investigating the life of an industrial site. The objectives of the research are firstly to understand the site life and the rhythm of change of the examined industrial site with the intention of understanding the urban transformation, urban policy and planning. Secondly, to discuss how the site has been transformed, redeveloped and reused through time; and lastly to analyse the roles of various actors involved in the trajectory of the site. In order to support this argument, this research will benefit from inter-disciplinary literature studies. Three main bodies of literature will be put forward; these are waterfront redevelopment, cultural geography, and architectural theory. The dynamic life of the Tophane site in Istanbul is the case study that is analysed in this research. The Tophane site has been, and still is, a very controversial and multi-dimensional site with respect to its use and transformation. Due to its strategic location at the connection point of the Golden Horn and the Bosporus, overlooking the historical peninsula. It has been used for a variety of functions in its history, such as artillery barracks, warehouses, exhibition spaces for the Istanbul Art Biennials, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Arts as well as cruise port. It has been subject to some of the most controversial urban transformation proposals in Istanbul, both regarding the use of the site as well as the bidding processes associated with these proposals. This PhD will cover the different phases of this site's lifetime from the beginning of the twentieth century until 2014 and investigates the crucial roles played by various actors in its transformation and in the resistance to its transformation. The innovative aspect of the dissertation is that it crosses the boundaries of cultural geography and architectural theory. In addition, the original use of research methods such as thick description, actor network theory, controversy mapping and layering aspires to contribute to architectural studies. Furthermore, the focus on the Tophane site in Istanbul aims to expand the geographical scope of both waterfront redevelopment and cultural regeneration literature. The ultimate contribution of the dissertation is to demonstrate how a thorough analysis of the complexity and the versatile nature of a site, including its changing phases and layers, can lead to a better understanding of the macro scale processes that shape the urban environment.

Espaços criativos : a configuração de uma espacialidade pela narrativa jornalística

Cardoso, Renata Carrero January 2017 (has links)
The proposals for redevelopment of desindustrialized areas through the promotion and development of the so-called creative economy activities are currently highlighted in the discussions on urban planning and public policies. To the creative economy sectors, the capacity to act as vectors of economic and socio-spatial development has been attributed through the establishment of new spatialities in the territory. In the convergence between the new economy’s taxonomy and the dynamics of capitalist production of urban space, the redeveloped territory acquires a value that is enhanced by symbolic meanings attributed to it, operated from discursive expressions articulated by its narrativity. In this sense, this study sought to analyze the narrative of the press in order to understand, from the elements of composition of the narratives, the communication strategies that contributes to the establishment of a creative spatiality and to the conformation of new values and social practices, as well as for the demarcation for the course of history. The results of the research demonstrate that the prescription of the creative spatiality of the IV District of Porto Alegre|RS can be understood as a mechanism for (re) production of space and reinsertion of territories in the dynamics of the real state market. The analyzed press’ narrative has played a relevant role in by operation not only as to induce the instauration of the physical space, but also of the social space, fomenting both its consumption and its production.

"Stará městská zákoutí v současnosti" (grafika - suchá jehla) / "The Old Town Secluded Places"

KODRAS, Jiří January 2012 (has links)
The presented thesis is focused on the inspiration and the creation of the series of six graphic sheets. The leitmotif of this complex are the old town secluded places, namely the place of former Prague ghetto. The places, which have disappeared, are interconnected with the present by means of the graphic sheets. The aim of the thesis was to depict the Prague Jewish town and to intensify this visually grateful theme by art depicting. The thesis contains a detailed summary of the artistic and literally depicting of the lost Jewish Prague in the course of centuries. There is also a map of some chosen places of the former ghetto ? its original purpose and the original appearance in contrast with the present. Further, the thesis describes graphic techniques including the dry needle technique, which is used for six graphic sheets. The thesis further deals with the topic of use of the graphic technique at the art schools. The conclusion of the thesis is the consideration regarding the collision of the present and seemingly lost world within the former Jewish Prague.

Legislating for urban aesthetics : a case study of the civic design panel Vancouver , B.C

Vanin, Daniel January 1972 (has links)
In the past several years many authors and critics of the urban scene have denounced the visual chaos that is now many North American cities. This condition has been attributed to several historical factors as well as to some present negative policies and practices by governments which affect the quality of the urban environment. Despite this traditional lack of concern, current trends point to a new and enlightened interest in the aesthetic quality of our cities. Various legislative acts have been passed by senior governments to enable certain municipalities to adopt local regulations and ordinances based on aesthetic objectives in order to control the visual, character of both public and private development. The historical evolution of this type of legislation is outlined, as well as the judicial attitude affecting its legality in the face of traditional conflicts between individual property rights and the inherent regulatory power of the municipality. In addition, special attention is given to the administration of this type of legislation, normally effected by an architectural board of review system which is empowered to assess the aesthetic merits of a project's design before approval to build is granted. The author affirms, however, that contrary to traditional concepts urban aesthetics in the architecture-urban fields today are based on broader and more comprehensive design criteria than merely the arrangement of an individual building's form or architectural "style". He further hypothesizes that the role of architectural review boards must be broadened to include the functional as well as the aesthetic aspects of design review in order to improve the city's total physical environment. A case study of the Vancouver Civic Design Panel is used to test the validity of the hypothesis as well as to assess the merits of the design panel system in principle. Within the context of the case study, the conclusions reached generally confirm the author's original affirmation and hypothesis. / Applied Science, Faculty of / Community and Regional Planning (SCARP), School of / Graduate

Urban renewal in Canada : an assessment of current practice

Bunge, John Christian January 1967 (has links)
Urban renewal is the total process of replacing, repairing, and maintaining the various parts of the urban environment as required, to permit them to continue to contribute to the life of the urban area. This process involves both public and private action when the urban components become deteriorated, obsolete and suitable for alternate use, or are in danger of depreciating in condition. In this paper, however, the broad spectrum of urban renewal has not been examined, but instead, concentrated consideration has been given to public activity in this field. Federal urban renewal legislation in Canada has evolved out of a national concern about the economic consequences of the collapse of the house construction industry during the world depression of the 1930's. This concept has been altered to some extent by the recognition that not only was new construction required in new areas, but also, provision had to be made to replace and repair the older parts of the city. This broadening scope of urban renewal has been reflected in the successive revisions and amendments to the National Housing Act, from 1944 to 1966. However, the realization that urban renewal is but part of overall community planning has not yet been fully demonstrated in the Canadian federal legislation. The British North America Act has endowed the provinces with the responsibility for municipal institutions, matters of a local nature, and property and civil rights. Thus, although national economic considerations spawned the initial public urban renewal activity, the national federal government is unable to work directly with the municipalities in the provision of financial aid and technical assistance. Instead, the provinces may approve only what the municipalities initiate, and approval of applications for federal urban renewal assistance is made in the Ottawa head office of Central Mortgage and Housing Corporation. A nation-wide survey of officials involved with urban renewal at the three levels of government, confirmed that the scope of the present program needs to be broadened. Considerable dissatisfaction was also expressed with the procedural delays and the lack of co-ordination between the federal, provincial, and municipal governments. Housing is regarded as the most critical area of urban problem, with civic appearance, traffic and parking, and socio-economic conditions, in decreasing order of importance. Decentralization of federal authority, more local autonomy, and creation of a single department to deal with all urban affairs, have been suggested for reducing administrative delays. The results of this investigation have confirmed the need for general revision of the program for urban assistance. One of the principal reasons for the deficiencies of the Canadian urban renewal program appears to be the separation of responsibilities as allocated by the British North America Act. Therefore, the hypothesis is considered to be valid, namely that URBAN RENEWAL IN CANADA HAS BEEN LESS THAN TOTALLY EFFECTIVE BECAUSE OF THE CONSTITUTIONAL LIMITATIONS OF THE BRITISH NORTH AMERICA ACT. / Applied Science, Faculty of / Community and Regional Planning (SCARP), School of / Graduate

Re-Imagining the Middle Landscape

Batman, Joshua S. 20 August 2013 (has links)
This thesis seeks to tie into the underlying ideology of the middle landscape that has shaped housing development in the United States up to this point, and re-imagine its physical manifestation. An incremental approach is taken in imagining what housing might be in America, considering our myths surrounding the single family house, micro and macro community creation, density, sustainability (regarding the economics of the home and country, as well as our place in an ecosystem), emerging timber construction of tall buildings, and industrialized methods of building.

A mix of passive and active green building strategies are employed in making an expanded or "inhabited envelope", which surrounds a 22-story mass timber modular mid-rise residential tower in Red Hook Brooklyn. The base of the tower and development of the city block include a cooperative factory for wood based production, innovative bike storage, bike repair shop, shared use digital fabrication lab, shared use shops (wood, metal, and upholstery), loading dock, laundry, gym, shared use office space, and café. / Master of Architecture
