An investigation of the effect of cue-controlled relaxation on test anxiety of active duty military personnel

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of Cue-Controlled Relaxation on test anxiety of active duty military personnel, as measured by the Test Anxiety Inventory. The major hypothesis was stated in the null form.Eighty-five subjects volunteered to participate in the study. Using a table of random numbers, subjects within three intact classes were assigned to the three treatment conditions. There were 25 subjects in the Cue-Controlled Relaxation Treatment Group, 28 subjects in the Placebo Treatment Group, and 32 subjects in the No-Treatment Group of this Pretest/Posttest Non-Equivalent Control Group Design. The subjects were all students in the Primary Leadership Training courses of the Seventh Army Combined Arms Training Center (7th CATC) Non-Commissioned Officers' (NCO) Academy, Bad Toelz, Federal Republic of Germany. There were 12 females and 73 males in the total sample, ranging between 20 and 40 years of age.The Test Anxiety Inventory (TAI) was used to measure test anxiety before treatment and after treatment. The TAI consists of 20 items relating to Worry, Emotionality and Total score.The major null hypothesis was tested through a One-way Multivariate Analysis of Variance. The three measures of the dependent variable in the three groups were highly correlated, indicating that they were assessing the same factor. No statistically significant difference was observed among the three groups. Therefore, the null hypothesis was not rejected.

A Comparison of Imagery Relaxation and an Educational Treatment Modality for Dysmenorrhea

This study is a comparison of four treatments involving education and imagery relaxation for the amelioration of dysmenorrhea. Treatment was presented to 76 subjects by videotape during a one-hour session. A six month follow-up was performed using one of the original instruments, the Symptom Severity Scale (Cox & Meyer, 1978) and a questionnaire designed for the study. Analysis of the test instruments indicated a significant treatment effect for the educational group. The second most effective treatment was a combined treatment utilizing imagery relaxation and education, although this group did not produce significant results. The no-treatment control group was more effective in diminishing symptoms than the fourth group, imagery relaxation alone. The lack of effectiveness of the imagery relaxation treatment was hypothesized to be due to lack of reinforcement of the technique. The educational treatment modality offered the individual an opportunity to learn about many different etiological facets of dysmenorrhea, including biological, learning, and cognitive factors. The presentation also introduced the individual to several different treatment modalities in order to provide an armamentarium of effective methods for diminishing or eliminating dysmenorrhea. These results suggest that there is a need for education about dysmenorrhea before menarche, in order to prepare, prevent, treat, and cope with this syndrome.

Progressive Muscle Relaxation as an Intervention to Reduce Manic Symptoms

Introduction: Bipolar disorder is a serious mental illness, but medications and psychosocial approaches designed to treat it leave significant room for improvement. This study investigated Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR), a treatment originally designed to reduce anxiety, as a way to reduce manic symptoms. Methods: Participants with bipolar I disorder (n = 44) were assigned via stratified randomization to complete PMR or a control condition (self-focused calming). Participants underwent a positive mood induction procedure, and completed several measures of manic symptoms at Session 1 and Session 2 (several weeks later). Results: Among those who experienced a successful positive mood induction, PMR and the control condition generally resulted in similar reductions in high-arousal positive affect. Participants who practiced PMR between the two sessions tended to experience greater reductions in positive affect at Session 2 compared to those who did not practice. Discussion: The relative parity of the PMR and control conditions suggests that people with bipolar I disorder have effective strategies for regulating positive emotions. Rather than teaching additional strategies, it may be more fruitful to develop methods for helping people with bipolar disorder to implement the strategies that work for them.

Relaxation in the electrical properties of amorphous selenium based photoconductors

Time-of-Flight (TOF) and Interrupted-Field Time-of-Flight (IFTOF) measurements were performed repeatedly on several different samples of amorphous Selenium (a-Se) alloys as they aged from deposition or after annealing above the glass transition temperature (Tg) in order to examine the relaxation of the electrical properties. The mobility was found to relax slightly, but the relaxation did not fit well to a stretched exponential. The increase in the mobility for electrons was significantly more than the increase in mobility for holes in all sample compositions measured. For electrons, the mobility increased by 20-40%, whereas for holes, the mobility only increased by less than 10%. The relaxation of the lifetime, on the other hand, fit well to a stretched exponential. Furthermore, the overall increase in lifetime as it relaxed was much greater than the increase in the mobility. The average increase in lifetime was 85% for holes and 45% for electrons. The stretched exponential fits consisted of two important factors: the structural relaxation time ôsr and the stretching factor â. For a given a-Se alloy, ôsr was approximately the same for relaxation from both immediately after sample deposition, and annealing above Tg, indicating that the relaxation is readily repeatable and has the same physical origin. The relaxation was found to be dependent on the a-Se alloy composition. While the general shape of the relaxation was consistently a stretched exponential, ôsr increased with increasing arsenic (As) concentration in the alloy, while â remained constant between 0.6-0.7. Additionally, ôsr was found to be the same for both electron and hole relaxations for a given composition. Thus, the relaxation in both the electron and hole lifetime seems to be controlled by the same structural relaxation process, that is, the electron and hole traps are structural in origin.
