M.Sc. / Five plastid regions as source for phylogenetic information were used to investigate the relationships among ten genera of Vitaceae. These comprised the tmL intron, trnL-F intergenic spacer, rpL16 intron, rbcL gene and accDpsa/ spacer. Congruent results were obtained between separate, combined and Bayesian analysis with all four major clades being shared among trees. All bootstrap consensus trees obtained from single sequences or combined analysis suggest that Vitaceae is a monophyletic group with Leea weakly supported as sister to Vitaceae. The results presented provide novel insights into the relationships within ten Vitaceae genera and suggest direction for further studies.

D.Phil. (Botany) / A taxonomic revision of the genus Centella is presented that is based on vegetative and reproductive characters. Genetic data was included in the extensive research ofpossible hybridisation. Hybridization as a possible mechanism of evolution may account for the lack of conguence between taxonomic characters in Centella. Phylogenetic and phenetic methods of analysis were used to explore the relationships among species. The results show that Centella is a particularly difficult genus, with many ofthe problems experienced at species level being a reflection ofthe problematic nature of the Apiaceae. The taxonomic treatment includes nomenclature, synonymy, typification, diagnostic characters, detailed illustrations and geographical distribution of all 45 species that are recognized. Keys to the subgenera, sections and species are provided. The revision includes several taxonomic and nomenclatural changes. The genus is subdivided as follows: Subgenus Trisanthus Subgenus Solandra Subgenus Centella 1 species 4 species Section Erianthae Section Tri/obae Section Centella Section Virgatae 9 species 3 species 16 species 12 species The following 13 new species were described: C. annua, C. calcaria, C. rotundifolia, C. umbellata, C. ternata, C. crenata, C. cryptocarpa, C. gymnocarpa, C. pi/osa, C. brachycarpa, C. dolichocarpa, C. thesioides and C. glauca. One ofthese species C. cryptocarpa, has been collected for the first time. Centalla rotundifolia, C. cordata and C. longifolia were elevated to species rank and C. rigescens was reinstated as a species of Centella. The number of varieties was significantly reduced and variation within the species is mostly described informally. Varieties were retained for only two species. New varieties are: C. tridentata var. tridentata, C. tridentata var. littoralis, C. tridentata var. hermanniifolia, C. tridentata var. dregeana, C. graminifolia var. graminifolia, C.graminifolia var. natalensis and C. graminifolia var. stipitata.

M.A. / Contemporary organisations and the people working within these organisations are currently facing a high degree of change which is having an adverse affect on the employer-employee trust relationship. This study examines the nature of this change and, in so doing, considers the issue of the post-industrial and the post-modern as an indicator of the arrival of a new era. The conclusion is reached that the grand narratives are inadequate as explanations for the arrival of a totally new era and that they rather refer to what may be seen as a transformational process. In this regard, attention needs to be given to more narrow theories. With this in mind emphasis is placed, not only on the continuities within society, but on social discontinuities and, in particular, on the erosion of employer-employee trust. The issue of trust as a factor in organisational success is discussed in some depth while attention is given to contemporary theories of trust and the apparent lack of synthesis amongst these theories. An attempt is made, based on some of the theories discussed, to develop a comprehensive model of trust. This model deals with both the conditions that lead to the onset of trust and those factors of trustworthiness which may enhance or erode trust within an existing relationship. The impact, of what appears to be the emergence of a new epoch and in particular the changing nature of work, on the notion of organisational trust is also discussed. Such issues as job losses, reduced opportunities and increasing work loads, changing job structures, changing employee values, organisational diversity and the rise of individualism are considered. This leads on to the conclusion that, within an increasingly competitive world, trust plays a central role within an organisation. For this reason it is argued that it is important for employer and employee to address the erosion of trust, and for the sociologist to become involved by taking an active role, as both researcher and facilitator, in the process of improving the employer-employee trust relationship.

The effect of 1-MCP, controlled atmosphere and heat treatment on Santa tomatoes.Niemann, Nicolette 21 April 2008 (has links)
Tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum cv. Santa) are climacteric fruit that continue to ripen after harvest. Once the fruit are separated from the plant, the physiological reactions that control the ripening process are altered, so that tomato quality is altered. The earlier the stage of ripening at harvest, the larger the discrepancy between the tomatoes left to ripen on the plant and those harvested while still unripe. Quality is lost as the tomatoes lose moisture, firmness, nutrients and stored carbohydrates. Other aspects such as colour and flavour development and cell wall modifications also affect the quality of unripe harvested tomatoes. Environmental factors that affect the postharvest quality include the temperature, humidity and atmospheric conditions in which the tomatoes are stored. Hormonal manipulation (introducing or blocking ethylene) also has an effect on the final fruit quality. This research project concentrated on the changes that occur in quality during post harvest ripening. Comparisons were made on how different post harvest treatments and storage protocols influenced the quality and longevity of tomato fruit. The purpose of this study was to determine storage conditions that would prolong the shelflife of tomatoes so that they can be acceptable for consumption for up to 40 days after harvest. The best results were obtained from tomatoes that had not completely turned red at time of harvest. These tomatoes could maintain their acceptability best when they were stored at 12°C under controlled atmosphere conditions. 1-MCP treatment was also effective in limiting quality losses for up to a week after harvest, and avoiding exposure to ethylene gas can also be recommended. Heat treatment was not at all successful in improving the longevity of the fruit. / Prof. C.S. Whitehead

Magister Artium (Psychology) - MA(Psych) / Postgraduate students are assumed to develop the capacity to conduct research independently and to evaluate their own work as internal supervisors through the process of thesis supervision. Research capacity building amongst postgraduate students is evidenced by the successful completion of degree requirements or graduation, but student retention and throughput is a problem. The study aimed to establish an evidence base of filtered information on interventions addressing the successful completion of thesis requirements in postgraduate students. The study design entailed a systematic review that explored published findings about research reporting on capacity building strategies and initiatives respectively. The researcher made the following ethical considerations namely, transparency, non-bias during data extraction and using two independent reviewers to assist the principle researcher and avoidance of plagiarism as the proposed study is project based and a collaborative process, which are essential when using a systematic review approach. The proposed study forms part of a larger parent study, which aims to identify factors that facilitate or hinder research capacity development in postgraduate students and new academics. The present study used an adaptation of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta- Analyses (PRISMA) statement, which is aimed at improving the reporting of systematic reviews and meta-analysis. Extracted data were subjected to a meta-synthesis, which included descriptive meta-synthesis and theory-explicative meta-synthesis. Eight articles were identified as good quality articles based on methodological rigour. The good quality research identified 1) high quality supervision, 2) faculty modelling, 3) support and 4) protected research time as effective strategies or interventions that stimulate successful completion of the thesis requirement. The use of appropriate theoretical frameworks in understanding supervision was identified as integral to effective strategies. Limitations of the study were identified and recommendations for future research were provided.
