Invented Rule as a Language Assessment Tool for Monolinguals and English Language Learners

Welsh, Amanda Christine 01 May 2013 (has links)
Clinical assessment of children who are English language learners (ELL) is often a difficult and time-consuming task for speech-language pathologists (SLPs) due to the complex nature of second-language acquisition and current methods of formal language assessment. Using an invented rule procedure has emerged in the literature as a screening tool to help determine whether flaws in language use and production are a consequence of language difference or language disorder. The current study utilized invented rule learning with a modeling protocol to compare performance on the invented rule task between children who are ELL to children who are monolingual. The study also compared task performance between age groups and compared individual participant's task scores to scores on the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test - III (PPVT-III). The results indicated no significant difference between ELL and monolingual raw scores on the task. A significant difference was present between the youngest age group and the older two age groups. There was a weak positive correlation between the invented rule task and the PPVT-III, which could indicate that the two tests are assessing two different areas of language. The invented rule could play a role in language assessment, however more research is necessary to determine under what circumstances its use is appropriate.

Firewall Rule Set Analysis and Visualization

January 2014 (has links)
abstract: A firewall is a necessary component for network security and just like any regular equipment it requires maintenance. To keep up with changing cyber security trends and threats, firewall rules are modified frequently. Over time such modifications increase the complexity, size and verbosity of firewall rules. As the rule set grows in size, adding and modifying rule becomes a tedious task. This discourages network administrators to review the work done by previous administrators before and after applying any changes. As a result the quality and efficiency of the firewall goes down. Modification and addition of rules without knowledge of previous rules creates anomalies like shadowing and rule redundancy. Anomalous rule sets not only limit the efficiency of the firewall but in some cases create a hole in the perimeter security. Detection of anomalies has been studied for a long time and some well established procedures have been implemented and tested. But they all have a common problem of visualizing the results. When it comes to visualization of firewall anomalies, the results do not fit in traditional matrix, tree or sunburst representations. This research targets the anomaly detection and visualization problem. It analyzes and represents firewall rule anomalies in innovative ways such as hive plots and dynamic slices. Such graphical representations of rule anomalies are useful in understanding the state of a firewall. It also helps network administrators in finding and fixing the anomalous rules. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Computer Science 2014

Phase transformations in the silver-aluminum system

Hawbolt, Edward Bruce January 1967 (has links)
The formation of grain boundary precipitates of the high temperature β phase from the supersaturated ɤ phase has been examined in Ag-5.64 wt.% aluminum alloys at 688°C . Large grained samples were used and the boundary misorientations were determined by X-ray diffraction. At low angle boundaries only primary sideplates formed while above a misorientation of 17° lenticular precipitates were dominant. Precipitate growth was studied on individual grain boundaries using a statistical technique. The lengthening and thickening rates were independent of the grain boundary misorientation indicating that grain boundary diffusion was not significant under these conditions. The precipitates grew with constant shape, with both the length and thickness increasing parabolically with time. By approximating the shape of the precipitate to that of an oblate spheroid growing with constant shape, an equivalent diffusion coefficient was calculated. The value obtained was in good agreement with measurements obtained from diffusion couples. The nature of the quenched β phase was also examined using optical and electron microscopy. The βphase transformed rapidly on cooling, forming a massive [symbol omitted] product or an acicular martensite at higher quenching rates. The structures were very similar to those reported for the Cu-Ga and Cu-Al systems. Many grain boundary precipitates showed unequal growth into the two matrix grains. Measurements of the matrix habit plane suggested that a possible orientation relationship existed between the precipitate and that grain into which no development occurred. In this case the precipitate nucleated in one grain but grew into the opposite grain. Precipitates which developed equally into both grains exhibited no apparent habit relationship with either grain. / Applied Science, Faculty of / Materials Engineering, Department of / Graduate

Phase equilibria in the system MgO-MgF2-SiO2-H2O

Duffy, Clarence John January 1977 (has links)
The proportions of F and OH in synthetic talc, clinohumite, chondro-dite, norbergite, brucite, and sellaite have been determined by X-ray measurement of interplanar spacings. Unit cell refinement has been carried out on intermediate sellaite, approximate composition MgOHF. The compositions of coexisting phases have been determined in forty hydrothermal experiments yielding information on eighteen different chemical equilibria. These data, combined with phase equilibrium and calorimetric data from the literature, have been treated by the method of least squares to produce a thermodynamic model of the system. Computed equilibria based on the model are in good agreement with data on natural assemblages. / Science, Faculty of / Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences, Department of / Graduate
