Buscamos gerar um texto de fácil leitura que estimule o leitor a prosseguir e aprofundar-se no estudo do assunto. Três métodos de resolução com seus respectivos Teoremas e demonstrações foram trabalhados: método para recorrências de primeira ordem, método das raízes características e método das funções geradoras. Buscamos trazer exemplos resolvidos utilizando os Teoremas demonstrados. Em alguns problemas, foram introduzidas novas técnicas de resolução a fim de enriquecer o trabalho e mostrar ao leitor a existência de diferentes formas de abordagem para solucionar uma relação de recorrência. Concluímos que a formulação de relações de recorrência é uma ferramenta poderosa e versátil na resolução de problemas combinatórios. Consequentemente torna-se assunto obrigatório aqueles que se aventuram no estudo da Matemática Discreta / Abstract: This study is about Recurrence Relations and some of their methods of resolution. We tried to generate an easy-to-read-text which stimulates the reader to proceed and to deepen his study about this subject. Three resolution methods with their theorems and demonstrations were studied: the method for first order recurrences, the characteristic root method and the generating function method. We seek to bring examples solved using the theorems stated. To some problems, new resolution techniques were introduced in order to enrich the work and show the reader the existence of different approach forms to solve a recurrence relation. We concluded that the formulation of recurrence relations is a powerful and versatile tool in the resolution of combinatorial problems. Therefore, it becomes na obligatory subject to those who adventure in the study of Discrete Mathematics / Mestrado / Matematica Discreta / Mestre em Matemática

Biorthogonal Polynomials

In this thesis we present some fundamental results regarding orthogonal polynomials and biorthogonal polynomials, the latter defined as in the article "Cauchy Biorthogonal Polynomials", authored by Bertola, Gekhtman, and Szmigielski. We show that total positivity of the kernel can be weakened and how this implies that interlacement for biorthogonal polynomials holds in general. A counterexample is provided showing that in general there does not exist a four-term recurrence relation such as the one found for the Cauchy kernel. As a direct consequence we show that biorthogonal polynomial sequences cannot be considered orthogonal polynomial sequences by an appropriate choice of orthogonality measure. Furthermore, we motivate a conjecture stating that the more general form of interlacement that exists for orthogonal polynomials also exists for biorthogonal polynomials. We end with suggesting some further work that could be of interest.

Lower ramification numbers of wildly ramified power series

In this thesis we study lower ramification numbers of power series tan- gent to the identity that are defined over fields of positive characteristics. Let f be such a series, then f has a fixed point at the origin and the corresponding lower ramification numbers of f are then, up to a constant, the multiplicity of zero as a fixed point of iterates of f. In this thesis we classify power series having ‘small’ ramification numbers. The results are then used to study ramification numbers of polynomials not tangent to the identity. We also state a few conjectures motivated by computer experiments that we performed.

Financial math is a theme of great relevance, since it is a field of direct application of various mathematical concepts studied throughout school education. One of the concepts that used is the study of geometric and arithmetic progressions. In order to study those, an approach based on recurrence relations is proposed. Due to the relevance of financial math in the student’s school formation, it is analyzed the ways the frequencies in which the theme is addressed in the High School National Exam and in the selection processes of the Ponta Grossa State University. With the goal of stimulating the algebraic manipulation and understanding of the financial math formulas variables, it is proposed the incorporation of the technological resources, in particular, of electronic spreadsheets, in classes about the theme. Through the tool, it is proposed the viability of financial math simulators in the classroom, seeking the diversification of activities. It is also contemplated the development of an app that operates under the Android Platform, seeking portability and sharing of the simulators that can be built in the classroom. / Este trabalho tem por objetivo propor uma abordagem alternativa para o ensino de progressões e matemática financeira, com a incorporação de recursos tecnológicos. A matemática financeira é um tema de grande relevância, uma vez que é um campo de aplicação direta de vários conceitos matemáticos estudados ao longo da educação escolar. Um dos conceitos utilizados é o estudo de progressões aritméticas e geométricas. Para o estudo destes, propomos a abordagem por meio da resolução de relações de recorrência. Devido à relevância da matemática financeira na formação escolar do aluno, analisamos as diferentes formas e frequência com que a temática é abordada no Exame Nacional do Ensino Médio e nos processos seletivos da Universidade Estadual de Ponta Grossa. Com o objetivo de estimular a manipulação algébrica e a compreensão das variáveis das fórmulas de matemática financeira, propomos a incorporação de recursos tecnológicos, em particular, das planilhas eletrônicas, nas aulas sobre o tema. Por meio dessa ferramenta, propomos a viabilização da construção de simuladores de matemática financeira em sala de aula, visando a diversificação das atividades. Contemplamos também a elaboração de um aplicativo para dispositivos móveis que operam com a plataforma Android, visando a portabilidade e compartilhamento dos simuladores que podem ser construídos em sala de aula.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / In this paper, we presents a didactic sequence of activities designed for a group of students of high school, their age were about 15 and 18 years old, with the main objective to study the problem proposed by the mathematician Flávio Josefo, in mid-year 64. The legend tells that a group of rebels, including Flávio Josefo, was trapped in a cave by the enemy army. Preferring the suicide to capture, the rebels decided to form a circle and, counting over this, to kill each third person of the rest of the group. Josefo was contrary of this suicide pact therefore, together with a friend, calculated very quickly the appropriated positions that both should take in this circle in order to get out of this terrible situation. To understand this solution, we propose, at the first moment, a review about the numerical sequences, including the special cases of arithmetic and geometric. Then, we introduce some notions about the de recurrence relations and the Principle of Mathematical Induction, allowing a generalization of concepts and results already known intuitively by the student group. / Neste trabalho, apresentamos uma sequência didática de atividades elaboradas para um grupo de alunos do ensino médio, na faixa etária de 15 a 18 anos, tendo como principal objetivo estudar o problema proposto pelo matemático Flávio Josefo, nos meados do ano 64. Conta a lenda que um grupo de rebeldes, dentre eles Flávio Josefo, foi encurralado numa caverna pelo exército inimigo. Preferindo o suicídio à captura, os rebeldes decidiram formar um círculo e, contando ao longo deste, matar cada terceira pessoa restante do grupo. Josefo era contrário a este pacto suicida e, por isso, juntamente com um amigo, calculou muito rapidamente as posições adequadas que ambos deveriam tomar nesse círculo de modo a saírem ilesos desta terrível situação. Para o entendimento desta solução propomos, inicialmente, uma revisão sobre sequências numéricas, incluindo os casos especiais de progressão aritmética e geométrica. Em seguida, introduzimos algumas noções a respeito de relações de recorrência e do Princípio da Indução Matemática, permitindo uma generalização dos conceitos e resultados já conhecidos intuitivamente pelo grupo de alunos.
