The mentioned State Law contains the general guidelines for planning, management and regulation of solid waste in the state. The implementation of recycling and composting plants is encouraged through a financial transfer from the government to those towns that decide to use this option to treat their waste. This study aimed to analyze the main role of recycling and composting plants in the state policy of solid waste and the demographic characteristics of towns that receive such benefit. In addition, it was listed and discussed the amount of funds guaranteed by the state to towns, the cost of implementing the facilities, and the legal process that led to the Law. It was concluded that the recycling and composting plants are a good alternative for solid waste treatment, especially in small and medium sizes towns. However the facilities must be embedded within a broad spectrum of the steps members of the management system of solid waste. / A política pública de resíduos sólidos de Minas Gerais é descrita na forma da Lei Estadual no 18.031 de 2009. Nela estão reunidas as diretrizes gerais de planejamento, gestão e regulamentação da atividade no Estado. A implantação de Unidades de Triagem e Compostagem é estimulada nesta política por meio de um repasse financeiro aos municípios que adotam estes dispositivos como forma de tratamento de seus resíduos. Este trabalho teve como objetivo analisar o papel das unidades de triagem e compostagem na política estadual de resíduos sólidos e as características demográficas dos municípios beneficiados. Além disso, foram realizadas observações em relação ao repasse financeiro garantido pelo estado aos municípios, os custos de implantação destes dispositivos e um resgate do processo que deu origem à Lei. Conclui-se que as unidades de triagem e compostagem constituem uma boa alternativa para o tratamento de resíduos sólidos, principalmente nos municípios de pequeno e médio porte. Entretanto as unidades devem estar inseridas dentro de um amplo espectro das etapas integrantes do sistema de gerenciamento de resíduos sólidos.
