Defendendo-se a import?ncia de considerar os aspectos f?sicos e sociais da escola e do bairro onde est? situada, essa disserta??o explora a percep??o ambiental para a compreens?o da rela??o entre ambos, o que envolve a valoriza??o da experi?ncia da pessoa que explora o ambiente, envolvendo informa??es sobre o local e sua representa??o. Foram selecionadas para o estudo turmas do 9? ano do ensino fundamental de uma escola p?blica municipal situada no bairro Guarapes, Natal-RN. Metodologicamente a investiga??o recorreu a uma estrat?gia multim?todos, desenvolvida em tr?s etapas: 1) elabora??o de di?rios (solicitou aos participantes desenharem mapas e produzirem textos com informa??es para algu?m que n?o conhece o local; espa?os frequentados durante um final de semana; espa?os frequentados em um dia na semana); 2) realiza??o de entrevistas individuais semi-estruturadas durante caminhada pelo bairro (esfor?o para o entendimento do cotidiano dos respondentes e aprofundamento dos dados provenientes da primeira etapa); 3) entrevistas coletivas, com a finalidade de devolutiva dos resultados aos estudantes e esclarecimento de quest?es em aberto. Participaram da primeira etapa, 23 estudantes, com idades entre 13 e 18 anos, e da segunda etapa 13 dentre estes estudantes. O resultado exp?s atrativos do bairro, geralmente localizados no chamado ?centro?, e setores segregados, em geral situados na periferia e associados ? inseguran?a. A percep??o dos participantes tamb?m mostrou que, embora a pol?ticas p?blicas no campo da educa??o indiquem a import?ncia da rela??o escola-bairro, os estudantes n?o aparentam reconhecer aspectos comuns que indiquem a integra??o entre ambos. Discute-se a import?ncia da atua??o das inst?ncias urban?sticas sobre a ?rea em estudo, e o papel da escola na forma??o do entendimento dos estudantes sobre o bairro e as realidades ali vivenciadas, com reflexos no pr?prio exerc?cio de sua cidadania. / Currently the approach between the school and the local context in which it operates is discussed, based on the terminology 'school-community relationship.' Advocating the importance of considering the physical and social aspects of the school and the space where it is located, this dissertation explores the environmental perception to understanding the relationship between both, which involves the appreciation of the person's experience that explores the environment, involving information about the place and its representation. The participants were students of the 9th grade of elementary school from a public school located in the Guarapes, Natal-RN. Methodologically, research used a multimethod strategy, in three steps: 1) do a daily; 2) conducting individual interviews with the participants while walking in the neighborhood; 3) interviews, in order to return the results to the students. Participated in the first stage, 23 students, aged between 13 and 18 years, and in the second stage, 13 students among the ones who participated in the first stage. The result has exposed attractive elements from the neighborhood, located in the so-called "center", and segregated sections, in general located on periphery and associated with insecurity. The perception of the participants also showed that while public policy in the field of education indicate the importance of school-community relationship, students do not seem to recognize commonalities integration between them. It discusses the importance of urban planning bodies; and the role of schools in construction of understanding about the relationship investigated, and the lived realities, reflected in the very exercise of their citizenship.
