Esta tese investiga a atuação das irmandades religiosas no meio urbano, a partir da forte imbricação destas com a configuração da cidade e da contribuição que deram para a forma de administração das práticas funerárias em Porto Alegre, ao fim do período colonial até meados dos Oitocentos. Parte da constatação de que a transferência dos cemitérios, ocorrida em 1850, esteve intrinsecamente ligada às emergentes idéias liberais do século XIX, que, tendo como ponto-chave a modernização urbana, foram fundadoras da noção de que a cidade deveria ser, por excelência, lugar de circulação e de movimento. Elementos estes que não são interpretados como indicadores de mudança brusca e radical das formas de enterramento dos rituais católicos, mas indícios da continuidade das irmandades religiosas como administradoras de tais práticas, inseridas em um novo paradigma espacial. / This thesis investigates the action of religious brotherhoods in the urban environment, considering the deep entanglement between those associations and the configuration of the city, and also the contribution they gave to the management of common funeral practices at Porto Alegre, from the beginning of the colonial period, up to the middle of the 19th century. Our research begins with the finding that the cemetery relocation, that took place in 1850, was intrinsically tied to the emerging liberal ideas of the 19th century. Ideas – whose key point was urban modernization – that originated the notion that the city should be, essentially, a place of circulation and motion. These elements are not interpreted as indications of a sudden and radical change in the forms of burial in the catholic rituals, but as signs of the continuity of religious brotherhoods as administers of such practices, only reinstated on a new spatial paradigm.
