Nonlinear transient dynamics of on-board rotors supported by Active Magnetic Bearings / Prévision du comportement dynamique d'une turbomachine supportée par des Paliers Magnétiques Actifs durant un évènement critique

Jarroux, Clément 19 July 2017 (has links)
Turbomachines are rotating machines enabling the conversion of the different types of energy. The latter are composed of a rotating mechanical part, called rotor, interacting with a fluid. Therefore, rotation play a key role in these machines and the mechanical link between the fixed and the rotating parts, called bearing, is essential for reliable and optimal operations. Turbomachines supported by active magnetic bearings (AMBs) are increasingly used by industrial companies, especially thanks to the absence of direct contact between fixed and rotating parts, enabling energy savings and reduction of CO2 emissions. Most of the time, these machines are "on-board" and are fixed on mobile supports. The motions generated by these supports must be considered in the prediction of the dynamic behaviour of turbomachinery in order to improve the designs accordingly. This PhD is a contribution to the study of turbomachines supported by AMBs subjected to strong external base motions. The approach is numerical and experimental. The use of an academic scale test rig comprising a rotor-AMB system, with the properties of an industrial turbomachine, allowed to test the developed models for cases of external solicitations such as earthquake and shock, thanks to the 6-axis shaker of the equipex PHARE. It is shown that the model provides good predictions of the behaviour of the machine for the tested cases. This tool can therefore be used for industrial designs.

Analysis and Reduction of Parasitic Effects in Induction Motors With Die-Cast Rotors

Stening, Alexander January 2013 (has links)
This thesis presents a study of inter-bar current effects on induction motors with die-cast aluminium and die-cast copper rotors. The parasitic effects introduced by these currents are analyzed and possible solutions to these problems are presented. This is realized by developing analytical tools for the simulation of inter-bar current effects. The methods used are verified by measurements on prototype machines. It is shown that the inter-bar currents can have a considerable effect on the motor starting performance, which can result in a reduced pull-out torque. At rated operation, this is seen as increased harmonic rotor currents, having a negative effect on the motor performance. Results from calorimetric measurements show, that the efficiency gained when substituting a skewed die-cast aluminium rotor with a skewed die-cast copper rotor, is less than the theoretical expectation. It is shown that this is a result of a reduced power factor for the copper rotor. High inter-bar currents are believed to be the origin of this effect, increasing the harmonic content in the rotor magnetomotive force. This would be seen as an increased rotor leakage reactance. Results from locked-rotor tests, and simulations using measured values of inter-bar resistance, support this theory. It is shown, that these negative effects are suppressed to a negligible level by the use of an unskewed rotor, but to the expense of a large synchronous torque at a low speed. By using a modulated rotor concept, having an asymmetrical rotor slot distribution, an unskewed rotor is designed to reduce this parasitic torque. Measurements on a prototype machine show that the modulated rotor suppresses both the inter-bar currents and the synchronous torque, resulting in an improved starting performance, without any significant change of the motor efficiency. The presented results strengthen the potential of the modulated rotor concept, introducing new possibilities for the reduction of negative effects appearing in induction machines. / <p>QC 20130320</p>

Turbulance induced loads on a teetered rotor

Weber, Timothy L. 26 April 1991 (has links)
Development of variable speed horizontal axis wind turbines has resulted in a need for an analysis code with a rotor speed degree-of-freedom. This study develops a five degree-of-freedom time domain computer code that evaluates blade and rotor, mean and cyclic loads with nonlinear aerodynamics together with atmospheric turbulence as a forcing function. Verification of the model is made by comparison of loads predictions between ESI-80 wind turbine data and analytical solutions. Results show good agreement for mean and cyclic loads and teeter angle excursions. A single-blade point turbulence simulation model is optimized using a three-blade point turbulence simulation model. The optimum point is the 80% radius location, although a multiplying factor is needed to make conservative fatigue cycle predictions of blade bending. ESI-80 start-up and shutdown scenarios are examined, prediction trends matched ESI-80 data. Three generator models are investigated. Results show that generator torque cycles are reduced and yearly energy capture increased by 24% when a variable speed generator is implemented. / Graduation date: 1991
