__________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This essay is a survey of the literature on Russell´s theory of definite descriptions from 1950 to 2005 approximately. The work presents arguments in favor of Russell´s theory and against it. In the first part, it is examined whether Russell´s theory is capable of accommodate the referential use of definite descriptions. In the second part, it is examined how it handles incomplete definite descriptions. The author of the essay believes that Russell´s theory has not been refuted and that most (but not all) of the criticism was properly met.
