This study investigated the convergent validity between two classical measures of childhood sexual abuse (CSA): the Russell Sexual Abuse Interview Schedule (Russell, 1983) and Finkelhor Survey of Childhood Experiences (Finkelhor, 1979). One hundred sixty eight participants were recruited from a Midwestern university. In addition to the two CSA measures, the following measures were also compared: a subject demographic information form, the Trauma Symptom Checklist-40 (Briere and Runtz, 1989), the Simple Screening Instrument for Substance Abuse (Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, 1994), and Rotter's Internal and External Locus of Control Scale (Rotter, 1966). This study provided support for convergent validity between the Finkelhor and the Russell. The majority of participants who reported CSA on the Finkelhor also reported CSA on the Russell, with more participants reporting CSA on the Russell. Although participants' responses on the Finkelhor were positively correlated with their responses on the Russell with respect to severity of the CSA, most participants did not receive the same rating for severity level on both measures. More participants endorsed experiencing CSA by a family member on the Russell than on the Finkelhor. There were significant positive relationships between presence, severity, and duration of abuse (as measured by the Finkelhor for some participants) and scores on the TSC-40, but fewer for the Russell. There were no significant relationships between identifying a family member as the perpetrator of the CSA on the Russell and Finkelhor and scores on the TSC-40 and scores for substance abuse. There were also no significant relationships between presence of CSA as measured by the Finkelhor and Russell and scores for substance abuse. The results of this study found support for discriminant validity for both CSA measures, as scores for neither measure correlated with scores on Rotter's I-E Scale. The results of this study suggest that more research needs to focus on developing consensus on the definition of CSA and on determining how to measure frequency, severity, and duration of CSA accurately. Research on how to measure the characteristics of CSA can yield important information about the relationships between these characteristics and negative outcomes, such as substance abuse, which can be used to inform treatment.

M.A. / The sexual molesting of children is a phenomenon that can definitely not be ignored. In April 1989 the Minister of Law and Order intimated in his opening address at a symposium that this phenomenon should certainly not be allowed to spread like a cancer throughout. society. In reality the' sexual molesting of children has a long history throughout many centuries. Sexual child molesting is currently prominently in the forefront since the exposure of this phenomenon in 1988. The South African Police have established Child Protection units country-wide to establish a support system with regard to combatting this phenomenon. Two aims of this study are, amongst others, specifically to determine the profile of the child molester and to determine the origin, functioning and procedure of the Child Protection unit of the South African Police. This study is primarily of an investigative nature since it is aimed at obtaining insight and gaining understanding. The study can also be defined as self-initiated research due to the researcher's interest in the phe,nomenon of child molesting as such. The most important methods followed to realize this study were that firstly a thorough literature study was conducted. Secondly, a pilot investigation was carried out by means of a structured questionnaire that was completed by members of the Child Protection unit of the South African Police in Johannesburg. Four questionnaires were completed and in such a way deficiencies could be identified and eliminated. This structured questionnaire was sent country-wide for completion by Child Protection units. Thirdly, observation through participation was applied in that the researcher entered the milieu of the Child Protection unit of the South African Police in Johannesburg. Lastly, information was continuously documented and systematized in the study.

Magister Psychologiae - MPsych / This study ws aimed at understanding the particular experiences of children who have been sexualy abused, with regrds to their experiences in court.With the high prevalence of sexual abuse in South Africa, many children are forced to testify against the alleged perpetrators of these crimes in public courts. Several reforms have been introduced into the child justice system, inorder to make the process of child testimony more child-friendly. The research explicated the children's expereinces of the new courtroom procedures and it was found that some aspects of the legal process were indeed experienced as a form of secondary traumatisation. / South Africa
