A survey of the available literature on Katherine Mansfield has shown that, in the five decades which have elapsed since the author's death, critical interest has gradually, but significantly, altered its direction. Despite the workmanlike assessments of such critics as David Daiches in Britain and Andre Maurois in France, and the recognition of her mastery of the short story form by such fellow practitioners of the art as H.E. Bates and Elizabeth Bowen, the mainstream of criticism tended, in the first decades after the author's death, to centre less upon the characteristics of the work itself than upon a cult- like fascination, initiated, perhaps, by the perceptive but over-interested pen of Middleton Murry. Only more recently has this tendency been superseded by a more rigorous scrutiny of the stories themselves; thus the excellence of the author 's technique has now become a major concern. Recent recognition has been accorded, too, to the fact that the stories were in the vanguard of their time with regard to the choice of, as well as the treatment of, theme. Intro. p. 1-2.

Além da análise do conto, procedeu-se também a análise de um material de apoio à leitura, elaborado e oferecido pela Secretaria da Educação do Estado de São Paulo, em 2012, com o intuito de subsidiar o trabalho dos professores de língua portuguesa, para que estes promovam uma leitura prazerosa e competente. Pretende-se, nessa segunda análise, verificar se o material de apoio em questão contempla, por meio das estratégias de leitura propostas, um estudo da construção linguística do conto e da preparação de um simples leitor para o leitor-modelo, responsável e crítico, capaz de construir o sentido de modo autônomo e de argumentar sua recepção. O procedimento metodológico consta de duas etapas: a primeira corresponde à revisão bibliográfica e ao estudo de pressupostos teóricos sobre a leitura, o texto literário e o papel do leitor no texto literário. Para tanto, a pesquisa se pauta principalmente na teoria do Leitor Modelo, conceito abordado por Umberto Eco (1986) e na Estética da Recepção difundida na década de 1960, por meio das pesquisas de Hans Robert Jauss (1994) e Wolfgang Iser (1996). Na segunda etapa a pesquisa foi feita de forma qualitativa, já que esta permite ao pesquisador ter contato direto e prolongado com a situação que está sendo pesquisada, possibilitando-lhe vivenciar a realidade, fundamentada nos estudos de LÜDKE; ANDRÉ (1986). Na montagem, escolheu certos textos que havia publicado entre 1870 e 1873, no Jornal das Famílias, desconsiderando um número significativo deles. Investigamos as possíveis razões para a seleção que o escritor montou, tentando observar, ainda, se tal escolha obedece a algum projeto literário machadiano. Para tanto, recorreu-se a leituras da crítica machadiana, aos contos em seu suporte de publicação primária e ao referencial teórico da História Cultural. Almeja-se contribuir para o avanço das pesquisas a respeito dos primeiros contos machadianos, no que concerne à construção desses textos e configuração, pela escolha, do projeto literário machadiano, assim como de uma possível relação entre a formação dessa coletânea e o ideal de "literatura brasileira" que o escritor e crítico Machado de Assis parecia ter em mente naquele momento. Também se analisou fatos relativos à história da publicação da coletânea, a fim de verificar se o editor Baptiste-Louis Garnier, que publicou tanto o Jornal das Famílias quanto a coletânea Histórias da meia noite, de 1873, teria tido alguma participação - direta ou indireta - na seleção feita pelo autor fluminense / Abstract: This work reflects on the selection made by Machado de Assis to compose his Histórias da meia-noite. During this process, he chose certain texts that were published between 1870 and 1873, in the Jornal das Famílias, excluding a significant number of them. We researched the possible reasons for the writer's selection, trying to observe if these choices follow any literary project of the author. In order to do so, we have examined critical readings of Machado's works, the short stories in their medium of primary publication and theoretical references of Cultural History. We aim to contribute to the advancement of researches on Machado de Assis' short stories, regarding the construction of these texts and configuration, by his own choice, of his literary project, as well as the possible relation between the formation of this collection and the ideal of "Brazilian literature" that the writer and critic Machado de Assis seemed to have in mind at that moment. Facts related to the history of the collection's publication were also analyzed, in order to verify if the editor Baptiste-Louis Garnier, also the publisher of Jornal das Famílias and the collection Histórias da meia noite, of 1873, would have participated - directly or indirectly - in the selection made by the author from Rio de Janeiro / Mestre
