Internationalization Process and Strategy Of Born Global SME

<p>The purpose of this paper is to explore the internationalization process of Chinese Born Global SMEs and attempt to reveal the uniqueness. Base on the literature review and former studies, in this paper the Born Global SME internationalization process is assumed to depend upon the firms’ entrepreneurs’ experience, background and network; Product characteristics; Degree of Internationalization; Environment and Globalization.</p><p>In the study, a qualitative study was conducted in order to generating the understanding why and how Chinese Born Global company internationalization. </p><p>More specifically, the problem was investigated by using cases study and conducting in-depth interviews of key employees in four case enterprises. The case companies were selected from a pool of respondents to a survey, all of which are located in Zhejiang Province, Eastern China and founded in 1990s.</p><p>After analyzing the empirical data and comparing them with theories, the result demonstrates that Born Global SME is extremely international, and their internationalization process is totally different from the traditional internationalization theories. </p><p>The main conclusion of the study is Born Global SMEs growing rapidly in China, however, Chinese Born Global SMEs still on initial stage, OME mode is a wide used mode to enter international market by Chinese Born Global SMEs, at the end, some recommendations was also given.</p>

Entrepreneurship and SME Development in Transition Economies: The Case of Georgia.

Introduction Entrepreneurship and SME development play a crucial role in speeding up the economic development of transition economies. Although entrepreneurship exists in all environments it flourishes in the conditions where it is supported. Transition economies, as well as Georgia, are characterized by inefficient framework conditions that present barriers to productive entrepreneurship and SMEs to develop and benefit the economies in their full potential.   Purpose The Thesis aimed at answering the following research questions:   1)      To what extent the framework conditions necessary for promoting productive entrepreneurship and SME development exist in Georgia? 2)      What are the perceived barriers to entrepreneurship and SME development in Georgia? 3)      In what ways is entrepreneurship and SME development encouraged and supported in Georgia? Method The thesis consists of theoretical data such as literature review, secondary data presented by previous studies, and primary data collected by conducting interviews with Georgian entrepreneurs and representatives of governmental bodies and NGOs engaged in improving a business climate in the country.   Conclusions The study revealed that basic framework conditions for developing entrepreneurship are present in Georgia. Although inefficiencies and institutional gaps give rise to a number of barriers to entrepreneurship and SME development. They are mostly presented by inefficient tax system and financial framework. Despite their efforts towards fostering favourable business environment, GoG, as well as NOGs could do a better job in improving an indirect support in terms of abolishing imperfections in the taxation system, as well as directly providing finance, training and effectual information flow to existing and potential businesses.

Strategic Management in East Asia SMEs : The Case Study of SMEs in China and Indonesia

Problem: Researchers argue that strategic management and its implementation has be-come the main focus in SMEs because of its role in generating economic wealth. Although, there are many advantages to use strategic management, there are still many SME organizations that resist using it, since some of them may think this process is only useful for larger organizations and they did not recognize that it‟s also very helpful for SMEs as a whole. Therefore, the organization face challenges such as how to use this strategic management, and how to recognize the importance of strategic management and so on.     Purpose: Our purpose is to find out how strategic management determines / affects / in-fluence SMEs performance in South East Asia and specifically in China and In-donesia. Moreover, its purpose is to identify the crucial factors that determine survival and growth in the two countries. Theory: The theoretical framework is divided into several major parts. We start with looking at definition of strategy and different types of strategy in organization. The chapter continues with looking at SMEs strategic Management Model (Analoui &amp; Karami, 2003), strategic choice, strategic fit and theory of firm per-formance i.e. dynamic capabilities (core capabilities). The last part of the chap-ter combine the previous theory, i.e. strategy and firm performance. More spe-cific, we use our theoretical framework of the process, regarding the effect of strategic management on SMEs performance.   Method: We chose qualitative method as our research method. We use case study to do this research and conduct interview to collect data. Qualitative is the appropriate method for this thesis since we aim to understand the phenomenon of SMEs strategic management on different levels. In order to gain more information, we conducted interview with middle management and top management of the com-pany. This method help us to explore into deeper stages of analyzing our subject and support our research.   Conclusion: We found there is no general answer on how strategic management determine / affects / influence SMEs performance in East Asia SMEs specifically in China and Indonesia. Further, the studied companies have more common characteris-tics than different characteristics. All of them are aware of the importance of us-ing strategic management. Moreover, our research indicate that understanding the role of internal &amp; external factors, and constantly combining the two factors into daily operation are the crucial factors for these companies survival and growth in the two countries

Obstacles to innovation management in SMEs : A case study of Libo Airport

This thesis examines innovation, innovation management and the innovation process in SMEs (small and medium enterprises). There are many academic researchers who work on innovation management but there are very few studies on SME innovation management. The aim of this master thesis is to evaluate of the characteristics and obstacles for implementing innovation management in SMEs. The study is limited to the airport industry as an example of a customer service intensive company. By using case study and survey methods, the thesis analysis new trends of airport business and the problems of implementing innovation management in such customer service intensive company. Data was primarily collected through interviews, observations and questionnaires. Secondary data was collected from literary sources in order to provide context and background. The results display the characteristics of SMEs innovation management, which in this case for instance concern limited resources, short-term strategy and flexible administration management. The results also point out the obstacles on SMEs innovation management implementation, for example informal process model, low involvement of employees, limited budgets, slow upgraded technology and low degree of communications.

The internationalization of SMEs can be expected to gain further momentum because the world economy is becoming increasingly integrated with continuing declines in government-imposed barriers and continuing advances in technology. Meanwhile, more and more SMEs from developing countries start to increase their overseas business. The purpose of this thesis is to study or investigate how SMEs develop and implement their internationalization strategies. To be able to illuminate this question in more detail, essential factors will be looked upon in this paper. We choose the export business as a main entry mode due to SMEs general lack of resources. Generic strategies and marketing mix analysis will also be discussed in the paper in order to obtain essential factors which influence performance of SMEs from developing countries which internationalize their business.Only a qualitative study was carried out to help determine the purpose of the paper, where data was collected through a real case study which was an Exporting Company from a developing country. The primary data was collected through interviews via email with the company founder, accounting manager, manufacturing manager and sales managers, complemented with secondary data collected from internet sources.The empirical findings and analysis has brought to light some interesting conclusions. Export can be a smart choice for SMEs, because they lack of resources at the initial period. Whether the choice is direct export or indirect export, the driving force of SMEs from developing countries are their natural dispositions. Mixed generic strategy can help SMEs conquer disadvantages. While marketing mix theory can also help SMEs aim at niche markets more clearly.Thus, exporting as the most suitable entry mode for SMEs, while mixed generic strategies and marketing mix theory also should be taken into consideration. Therefore the success of internationalization process will be increased for SMEs from developing countries.

Pathways to the Development: A Comparative Study of Business Structures in Korea and Taiwan

This thesis examines the emergence of different business structure in Taiwan and South Korea. This thesis questions how, in very similar contexts, different economic institutions have evolved. In contrast to the political, market, and cultural perspectives dealing, the historical comparative institutional analysis adopted in this research suggests institutions alone could not explain the different business structure. In Korea and Taiwan, different business structure has emerged during the 1960s and 1970s, and this thesis considers three factors underlying their formations: political conditions, historical events, and industrial adjustments. The Chaebols in Korea, to a large extent are the result of a political alliance between the South Korean governments with the entrepreneurial elites to overcome their weak political support basis. Thus South Korea was, exposed largely to the leverages and influences of large business conglomerates which in turn benefited the growth of the Chaebols. In Taiwan, however, the business groups are the oucome of state policies in the economic realm. To avoid political challenges from centralized business groups, the KMT government in Taiwan distanced itself from the business sector and when necessary, exerted strong measures to restrict the business concentration. Thus, business structure in Taiwan are more diffused and balanced in its proportions. SMEs produces most of the export goods while the Large enterprises and State own enterprises produce the domestic consumer goods. This thesis pilots aspects of an alternative explanation, which aims to add additional explanation to the literature. Contrary to the prior conception of the institutional logic, the thesis concludes that growth of business structure in East Asia must incorporate attributes of historical and political conditions that support the entrepreneurial behavior, and the wider environment that serves to deter or reinforce risk-taking behavior.

The question of the influence of social capital on internationalization has been an important researched topic, as one of the factors for entering and post-entry operation on a foreign market. However there is a lack of knowledge, deepening on the importance social networks and relationships have for committing to a big foreign market such as the United States. The purpose of this research is to provide a better understanding of the importance of a network of social ties when it comes to a firms’ commitment to a foreign market. This study has the goal of proving knowledge on the importance of social capital to firms’ commitment to a foreign market, by explaining better its positive and negative sides over the process. The theory in this work is being divided into three parts: internationalization of SMEs, social capital and influence of social capital on the firm’s commitment to a foreign market. The theoretical framework is based on the previous researches done in accordance to the topic of this thesis. A model is presented at the end of the theoretical framework in order to be outlined the process of analyzing the three firm cases later on. This study is using qualitative research method in order to find an answer to the research question set at the beginning of the project. Abductive method, combing the inductive and deductive approaches, is chosen as a way to interpret and explain causality on the elected topic and to develop the existing theory. Primary and secondary data have been collected through the research process by conducting interviews with firm representatives, looking at official web pages and reports. Three Swedish companies have been engaged in this research because of their successful establishment on the U.S. market. The results of this study are showing the importance social capital in the internationalization process. Networks should be considered as a crucial issue and cannot be neglected since this may lead to bad results, performance, loss of growth and position on the foreign market. However, different commitment results are coming from different approaches followed by companies. There might be both positive and negative results outlined from using social capital, which will lead to increased or decreased mode of internationalization. / Master thesis
