Por uma cultura ecológica / The pursuit of the Ecological Culture

Gomez-Rivera, Sara Maria 13 August 2010 (has links)
This study aims to understand and analyze from a conceptual point of view the term ecological culture, which has been used as a synonymous of several concepts associated to the capitalist economic rationality. Thus, the main objective is not to define what ecological culture is, but to point at the possible conceptual potentialities, since it has been shaped as a normative term, instead of a conceptual one. This study suggests a theoretical and critical analysis of the term and of several aspects linked to it, inquiring and reflecting on the current socio environmental crisis. First of all, an analysis of the terms culture, ecology and ecological culture is done, pointing at the current usages of the term ecological culture. Some possibilities of study of the ecological culture are analyzed based upon theoretical aspects from Karl Marx, Max Weber and using the political culture concept from Gabriel Almond and Sidney Verba. Finally, a reflection on the relation between ecological ideas and practices is made using the praxis concept, what leads to treat about public sphere, citizenship and individualism.

The indicator approach in the examination of spatial variations in the level of development of natives and the concept of dualism in Canada

Stewart, David A. 14 September 2007
Regional development in Canada is uneven. However, it is less clear whether native development in Canada is similarly patterned as non-native development. As well, it is not evident whether variations exist in the differences between the level of development of native and non-native people in different regions of Canada.
Development is a multi-dimensional process involving economic and social change. The primary purpose of this thesis is to examine the use of the indicator approach to create a measure of development which encompasses both the economic and social dimensions of development. The secondary purposes of the thesis are: (1) to use the indicator approach to compute a measure of development to identify spatial variations in the level of development of native people in Canada in 1981, and (2) to use development indicators to examine the spatial variations in the concept of dualism as it applies to native and non-native residents of Canada.
The data source for this analysis is the 1981 Native Summary Tape, a special tape produced by Census Canada containing a multitude of socio-economic data for natives and non-natives at the national, provincial, census division and census subdivision level. The primary statistical technique used in the computation of the development measures is principal components analysis. The development measures are computed at the census division level and mapping aids in the identification of the spatial patterns.
The results from this analysis suggest that the indicator approach to measuring development presented in this thesis is a valuable tool in the identification of spatial variations in development. This is an important procedure for researchers who wish to examine development in its socio-economic totality. Native development and dualism between native and non-native Canadians do vary spatially. The general pattern is higher native development and lower dualism between natives and non-natives in the larger urban centers and in central Canada.

Socioekonomické aspekty výživy seniorů / Socio-economic Aspects of Senior Nutrition.

ONDRÁČKOVÁ, Miroslava January 2017 (has links)
The focus of the presented diploma thesis is to evaluate the knowledge of seniors in the field of healthy nutrition. It is furthermore important to find out, whether the seniors have enough relevant information about rational nutrition and which sources they would like to use to gather information about healthy nutrition. Socio-economic aspects, which lead to senior nutrition, are also monitored. A quantitative research strategy and an in-depth interview were used to fulfil the aim of the thesis. The research group of twenty-two seniors was chosen by a method of purposeful sampling. The criteria for choosing seniors were an age between 65 74 years, old age pension, living alone and a responsibility for their own nutrition. The results of this thesis could be helpful to health insurance companies, municipal authorities, senior clubs or non-profit organizations which could create an environment for active education of seniors in the field of healthy nutrition. The seniors could learn to prepare tasteful high-nutrition meals. The seniors in their early phase of old age are the most endangered with obesity amongst all age groups. It is caused by the socioeconomic aspects they were influenced by during their lives. Their dietary habits started to form in the post-war period with the lack of food. They spent their working lives in the era of socialism, in which the selection of food was also restricted. In the nineteen-nineties, the seniors were in their mid-age and their dietary habits were already established. Theoretical knowledge in the field of rational nutrition is substantial, but the seniors are often not willing or lack the ability to create nutritionally balanced and tasteful meals. Therefore, the seniors would benefit from an interactive means of education with the possibility of learning necessary skills and contacting a nutrition specialist with their questions.
