Brownfield Redevelopment in Tucson: Examining Local Barriers and Solutions

Baker, Jared January 2015 (has links)
Sustainable Built Environments Senior Capstone Project / The state of brownfield redevelopment in areas such as the Midwest and the southern states have been well documented and supported by political action. The City of Tucson has a different social, economic, and political makeup than others. Brownfield remediation, therefore takes on a different ideal approach. In order to achieve an understanding of brownfield remediation within this metro area, economic statistics from neighborhoods harboring brownfields as well as information concerning active and successful sites such as the Greenway Connection, the Tucson International Airport, and the Old Fort Lowell Adkins property were analyzed. Neighborhoods with brownfields have lower median incomes, property values, percentage of family households, and higher unemployment than the average Tucson case. Lower economic status among stakeholders in concert with communal and area factors, contribute to stagnation in the remediation of these sites.

The politics of sustainable urban enironmental management in Islamabad

Zahidi, Tabassum Shahid January 1998 (has links)
Sustainable urban environmental management is a process of improving the urban environment and quality of life of all citizens. This means allocating urban resources fairly, ensuring civil rights of citizenship and adequate housing, and guaranteeing healthinessin the use of air or wateri n urban areas.T his, at least, is the principle. Islamabad is a capital city that has concentrated power historically, geographically and ideologically. The city was designed to promote the well-being of elite groups of Pakistan in the post colonial period. Due to this powerful status Islamabad appropriates an unequal share of resources and public wealth. This is the prestige capital of a nation where the interests of the social and political elites are served by the civil government, but where the well-being of those with no legal rights to settle are not taken into account in the management of urban resources. This position is maintained by a state-supported bureaucracy which manages urban development and virtually controls the whole process of urban development. In the wake of the UN Conference on Environment and Development, Pakistan and Islamabad have both embarked on a new agenda of what is termed sustainable environmentalm anagemente: quity in the distributiono f resources,e fficiency in the use of resources, and a more participatory form of urban governance. With the use of three case studies, on the allocation and pricing of water, on the provision of low income housing, and on the interaction of urban management and civil society groups, this research demonstrates that the sustainable urban environmental managemento bjectivesa re being ignored or reinterpretedb y the urban managemenot f Islamabad in favour of the politically supported elites, and in violation of the well-being of the poor. The conclusion of this research is that the radical and sustaining agenda of the post UNCED era is likely to be compromised in Islamabad. The process of reform has already been systematically delayed.

Study of sustainability opportunities during construction

Torres, Neftali 12 September 2014 (has links)
Construction Sustainability involves the processes, decisions, and actions during the construction phase of capital projects that enhance current and future environmental, social, and economic needs while considering project safety, quality, cost, and schedule. Most of the currently available published literature and advances in project level sustainability practices have focused on the early Concept Planning and Design phases of capital projects. Knowledge of sustainability practices during the Construction phase of capital projects is still in the early development stages and is highly fragmented; information regarding the selection, assessment, and implementation of construction sustainability solutions has remained largely unavailable or underdeveloped. Moreover, capital project owners and constructors increasingly seek practical guidance and resources to better integrate and evaluate sustainability decisions and actions within project construction services. The dearth of research on effective sustainability practices during the construction phase suggests that higher levels of sustainability attention and effort are needed in this area, in addition to the creation of support guidance and tools. To fill this gap in knowledge, this research has identified 54 unique actions that project teams can apply during construction to enhance the overall sustainability of their project. These construction phase sustainability actions (CPSAs) have been cataloged, characterized, and evaluated to facilitate their consideration and implementation by project teams. To further support the selection process and implementation of these actions, the research team developed a high-level strategic work process, a spreadsheet-based CPSA Screening Tool, and additional in-depth guidance for three CPSAs. In addition, both input- and output-oriented construction sustainability metrics have been developed and identified. Equipped with the findings from this study, owners and construction contractors will be better prepared to implement sustainability actions during the construction phase of capital projects. / text
