Thesis (MTech(Information Technology)--Cape Technikon, Cape Town, 1996 / Systems Analysis and Design (also known as Systems Development) is the systematic process of problem identification, problem definition, analysis of the causes of the problem, the design of alternative solutions to the problem, and the eventual implementation of the selected solution as a computer system (if possible). During this systems development process there are a quite a large number of principles and approaches that need to be considered. It is also required from the systems analyst to have certain skills and to know how to apply a number of tools and techniques. The purpose of this research is to determine which approaches, principles, skills, tools and techniques are required by the industry for the development of commercial computer systems so that_prospective systems analysts can be properly trained in those aspects. This means that the course content of training institutions should be updated accordingly. The aspects that form part of the course offered by the training institution where the researcher works, are discussed and identified out of the literature. The course content is compared with what is required by the industry by means of an empirical research consisting of a questionnaire and frequency and regression analysis. The results from the research indicate that the following aspects of systems development must be emphasized: 1. Phases of systems development " Implementation " Analysis " Planning " Design 2. Important tools and techniques " Data modelling " Process modelling " Presentations " Input and output design " Observation (for fact-finding) " Cross Reference between the data and process model 3. The need for such a methodology comes from the fact that identification of large-scale systems (LSSs) by one-shot approach may be numerically very complex. The analysis of LSSs is, in general, not approached by the one-shot methodologies normally associated with non-LSSs. The proposed method of hierarchical identification can be therefore viewed as an extension of LSS methodologies to system identification. LSS methodology aims at breaking up the initial, complex problem into a set of smaller size subproblems. / D

Neuroanatomical Distribution of Neurons within the Hypothalamic Paraventricular Nucleus that Project to the Brainstem Rostral Ventrolateral Medulla

The sympathetic nervous system is important in maintaining cardiovascular homeostasis. Elevated cardiovascular-related sympathetic activity can lead to neurogenic hypertension and a host of other serious cardiac-related abnormalities. The paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of the hypothalamus plays an important role in sympathetic cardiovascular regulation. Neurons from the PVN project to the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM), which is the main brain stem sympathetic cardiovascular control center. While RVLM-projecting PVN neurons have been well characterized, the topographical organization within the PVN subnuclei is still not fully known. This neuroanatomical study aimed to map the topographical distribution of RVLM-projecting PVN neurons. Four different carboxylate FluoSphereTM retrograde tracers (blue, 365/415; green, 505/515; red, 565/580; and far-red, 660/680) were injected at different rostro-caudal coordinates within the RVLM. The vast majority of RVLM-projecting PVN neurons were ipsilateral and located in the medial parvocellular subnucleus. Whereas most neurons were ipsilateral, there is a small fraction of neurons that crossed the midline. RVLM-projecting neurons were also identified within the dorsal, ventral, and posterior parvocellular subnuclei of the PVN with no labeling found in the anterior parvocellular or magnocellular subnuclei. Additionally, we observed different efficiencies of the retrograde tracers with blue (365/415) being the least efficient and red (565/580) being the best. These neuroanatomical data will serve as important preliminary data for future research investigating the functional and histochemical properties of these PVN neurons.

AnalyzeThis: An Analysis Workflow-Aware Storage System

Supercomputing application simulations on hundreds of thousands of cores produce vast amounts of data that need to be analyzed on smaller-scale clusters to glean insights. The process is referred to as an end-to-end workflow. Extant workflow systems are stymied by the storage wall, resulting from both the disk-based parallel file system (PFS) failing to keep pace with the compute and memory subsystems as well as the inefficiencies in end-to-end workflow processing. In the post-petaflop era, supercomputers are provisioned with flash devices, as an intermediary between compute nodes and the PFS, enabling novel paradigms not just for expediting I/O, but also for the in-situ analysis of the simulation output data on the flash device. An array of such active flash elements allows us to fundamentally rethink the way data analysis workflows interact with storage systems. By blending the flash storage array and data analysis together in a seamless fashion, we create an analysis workflow-aware storage system, AnalyzeThis. Our guiding principle is that analysis-awareness be deeply ingrained in each and every layer of the storage system—active flash fabric, analysis object abstraction layer, scheduling layer within the storage, and an easy-to-use file system interface—thereby elevating data analyses as first-class citizens. Together, these concepts transform AnalyzeThis into a potent analytics-aware appliance. / Master of Science
