A Study of Political Socialization of Junior High School Students in Kaohsiung CityChen, Chia-Ching 03 August 2005 (has links)
In this study, the political socialization process, which includes the family factor, school factor, fellows factor and mass media factor, of the junior high school students were explored and analyzed by using a questionnaire survey. The object of this study is to understand the diverse effects in political study, which includes the basic political view, democratic value and democratic attitude, of students with different social background.
Some findings in the study are:
¡]1¡^First of all, parent¡¦s occupation and ethnic group are mostly relevant to student¡¦s character in terms of family political socialization factors (PSF). But the school PSF is more relevant to gender and year of study. Besides that, there is a slightly relevance between the use of media, gender and year of study. The fellows PSF is more connected to gender, year of study, parent¡¦s job and ethnic group.
(2) The PSF of gender, year of study, parent¡¦s job and ethnic group, national identity are clearly correlated to national identity, the definition of national territory, the relationship between Taiwan and China, the definition of Chinese in nationality, and the relationship between Taiwanese and Chinese in terms of students¡¦ basic political attitude. However, among them, the gender factor is less relevant than the others.
¡]3¡^In respect to student¡¦s characters with the democratic value, gender factor is relevant to political equality and majority governance; and year of study, parent¡¦s job are relevant to democratic belief, political equality, majority governance, party competition and political trust. There are also some relevance between gender and political participation; year of study and political effects, citizen responsibility and political knowledge while talking about student characters with democratic attitude. However, overall speaking, democratic attitude less relevant to student characters compared with democratic value.

A study of elementary school students¡¦ perception of the NSTM imageChen, Ying-Ju 13 February 2007 (has links)
The National Science and Technology Museum (NSTM) is the largest science museum in southern Taiwan. Besides the main functions of research, collection, education and exhibition, it is crucial for the museum to find out its strengths and weakness through image analysis. Since the NSTM is also an educational organization, it is necessary to listen to its visitors in particular to students from local school. Getting a better understanding of the target audience will help the museum to promote a positive image and attract more attention from students.
The purpose of the study was to investigate students¡¦ perception of the NSTM image. Especially, the objectives of the study were described as follows:
1.To identify the dimensions of elementary school students¡¦ perception of the NSTM image.
2.To explore factors that influence students¡¦ perception of the NSTM image.
3.To help the NSTM to develop its own image.
4.To provide the NSTM with suggestions for future development to attract more students to be a frequent user.
Related literature was reviewed to identify the various dimensions and components of students¡¦ perception of the NSTM image for developing the survey instrument. The sample was selected from elementary school students in Kaohsiung Area. Totally, 390 questionnaries were distributed to fifth and sixth grades and 309 valid ones retured. The main findings of the study were:
1.The dimensions of students¡¦ perception of the NSTM image included product, advertisement and facility, learning and layout, supporting services, and environment impression.
2.Distance between schools and the NSTM influenced students¡¦ perception of the NSTM image.
3.Parents' educational backgrounds affected students¡¦ perception of the NSTM image.
4.Students do not have sufficient information about the activities and exhibition of the NSTM.
Each museum has an image in visitors¡¦ mind which influences the decision to visit or not. This study provided a piece of puzzle for the NSTM to better understand its visitors. It was expected the museum can develop a more appropriate learning and leisure environment for upper elementary school students.

A Study of the Effect of School-Sponsored, Extra-Curricular Activities on High School Students' Cumulative Grade Point Average, SAT Score, ACT Score, and Core Curriculum Grade Point AverageMiranda, Janet Young 08 1900 (has links)
This study investigated the effect of school-sponsored, extra-curricular activities on academic achievement for students at a private school in north central Texas. Students selected for this study were graduates from the classes of 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, and 2000. With a minimum participation of two years during grades nine through twelve, students were categorized into subgroups of activities. After eliminating students who participated in more than one of the extra-curricular activities of music, drama, visual arts, and athletics, three hundred sixty-one students were represented. The identity of students was encoded and information was recorded for gender, school-sponsored, extra- curricular activities, cumulative grade point averages, SAT Scores, ACT Scores, and cumulative grade point averages in core curriculum subjects. A two-way ANOVA test with a two-by-five factorial design was completed for research questions one through four. A one-way ANOVA with a one-by-five factorial design was completed for research question five. When a significant F was found, Scheffe and LSD post hoc tests were completed to determine pair wise interaction. Statistical differences did exist when comparing school-sponsored, extra-curricular activities and cumulative grade point averages with musicians having a significantly higher cumulative grade point average, SAT scores, and ACT scores than athletes. A significant difference was found among the activity subgroups regarding the cumulative grade point averages in the core curriculum subjects of foreign language, history/English (an interdisciplinary subject at the studied school), mathematics, and science with musicians scoring significantly higher than athletes in all subjects. It is recommended that further studies be conducted to investigate the impact of activities on student achievement. Studies might include larger and different populations, the impact of participation at a younger age, and the impact of other activities on student achievement.
