Hirsch, Isabel Bonat January 2007 (has links)
This research aimed at investigating the way music is present in basic education schools connected with the 5th Regional Education Coordination (CRE) in the southern region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The specific objectives were to identify the activities that constitute the musical practices in the schools and identify the professional people who work with music in the schools, as well as to analyze the educational needs of such professionals. The method chosen was the cross-sectional survey, and the data was colleted through a self-administered questionnaire. The people who took part in this work were 139 art/music teachers from the 104 basic education schools that work with the final years of fundamental teaching (ages 11 to 14) and middle teaching (ages 15 to 17) in the 18 cities connected to the 5th CRE. The results showed that music is present in the practices of most of investigated teachers. However, the musical activities are mainly developed in the scope of extracurricular activities and within the subject of arts education, where only one teacher works with all the arts. Moreover, most of these activities are only occasionally developed. Few are the teachers who work only with music in schools, which indicates that music does not seem to be included in the pedagogical projects of the schools as a specific knowledge field, but as part of arts education. Most of the teachers are graduated in arts, but very few are graduated in music or in arts education with emphasis in music. The lack of a consistent music education, along with the scarcity of material and financial resources and of adequate physical space, was pointed as one of the main hindrances felt by the teachers to the development of musical activities in the schools. The data obtained with this research can provide information to base partnerships between the Federal University of Pelotas and the schools connected to the 5th CRE, in order to meet their teachers’ education needs.

The following specific objectives were established: map the elementary school choirs in the city of Florianopolis; identify how the choir practice is embedded in public and private schools; know the characteristics of different school choir groups; analyze the goals of principals, conductors, students and families in regards to the choir practice performance and identify possible relationships between the practices performed by the choirs and the roles they take in their respective contexts. In the literature review, there were different elements on school choir practice, highlighting the functions of music performed in society and schools. It was considered the social roles of music mainly as categorized by Alan Merriam, including other authors who also study the subject. The methodology used was the multiple case study within a qualitative approach. The instruments of data collection were observations, semi-structured interviews, focus groups and questionnaires. In each context we sought to understand the conceptions of principals, conductors, singers and families involved in this activity in the schools surveyed. These data were transcribed, organized and analyzed from three categories: 1) the choir as an extracurricular activity; 2) who could sing in the choir and 3) repertoire and rehearsals. The results reveal the existence of only twelve choirs among the ninety-nine elementary schools identified in Florianopolis. These choirs are all inserted as extracurricular activities in these institutions. Among the five choirs surveyed, some similarities and differences were identified in regards to the functions they perform in each context. In general, roles of institutional validation, contribution to societal integration and entertainment were predominant. The knowledge of these roles may contribute to better understand how this practice occurs in each school favoring decisions that enhance even more the offered proposals. Furthermore, the analysis and reflection in this work can foster understanding the relevance, presence and expansion of the choir practice as a tool for school music education / Esta pesquisa buscou compreender como ocorre a prática coral e que funções esta atividade exerce em cinco escolas de ensino fundamental no município de Florianópolis, no estado de Santa Catarina.

Toward a Rationale for Music Education in the Public School Context Framed with both Progressive and Essentialist Considerations: Operationalizing the Ideas of William Chandler Bagley

Price, Benjamin J., 1980- 05 1900 (has links)
In music education, aesthetic education and praxial music education serve as two major, guiding philosophical frameworks, yet supporters of each often conflict with one another. Furthermore, both are slightly problematic with respect to the specific context of the public school. Each framework is primarily music-based, however, music education has existed in the wider context of general education since the 1830s. Given the recent core-status designation for music education, as part of all fine arts, in the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, a framework from general education that supported music education could offer benefits for the domain. However, the wider context of general education is messy as well. Two groups occupy most of the space there, and remain locked in a fundamental disagreement over the purpose of a formal education. The progressive educators, historically framed by Dewey and Thorndike, contend that education functions as societal improvement. In contrast, the essentialists contend that education functions as cultural transmission. Therefore, a more specific need for music education involves selecting a framework from general education that resolves this conflict. The writings of William Chandler Bagley indicate that he balanced both considerations of a formal education while also advancing his notion of essentialism. Bagley differed from the progressive educators predominately associated with Dewey over definitions and ideas surrounding a democratic education. Emergent points of contrast with Thorndike include distinctions between social efficiency and Bagley's alternative idea of social progress. Bagley also diverged from other essentialists over definitions concerning liberal and cultural education. To make these viewpoints of Bagley explicit, I describe characteristics of a progressive education, and an essentialist education separately, before introducing Bagley. Finally, I apply Bagley's ideas into the domain of music education. Ultimately, I contend that through common outcomes of creativity, competition, and literacy, the domain of music education can remain securely grounded in the values within the public schools.
