Drying of granular materials using an induction heated double-screw conveyor

Martel, Sylvain, 1980- January 2008 (has links)
An experimental study of the drying of sand using an induction heated double-screw conveyor (screw shaft radius 0.0381 m, blade radius 0.0883 m, thread pitch 0.0869 m, heated length 1.96 m) is presented. The main aim was to improve the understanding of the operating characteristics of the dryer and obtain data for testing and refining future mathematical models. In the drying tests, power to the induction coils was controlled to obtain uniform screw shaft temperatures between 150 to 250°C. The angular rotation speed of the screws ranged between 2.5 to 15 rpm; and inlet moisture content (mass fraction of water) was varied between 0.1 to 10 %. The sand used had a mean effective diameter of 0.38 mm, particle density of 2743.7 kg/m3, and uncompacted dry bulk density of 1508.2 kg/m3. The results of sand characterization tests, conveying tests without induction heating, and drying tests are presented and discussed.

Zahvaljujući ovde postavljenim modelima moguće je uraditi optimizaciju geometrije i parametara sistema mešanja uzimajući u obzir kvalitet procesa mešanja i cenu finalnog proizvoda.
/
The quality mixing of powders, particles and/or granules obtain an engineering, energetic, economic and ecological importance of various technologies, food industry, pharmaceutical and chemical industry. The mixing efficiency, the design of equipment and mixing parameters exert a strong impact on quality and the price of intermediate or final product. In this thesis, the use of Discrete Element Method (DEM) is shown for modeling of granular and/or powder flow in various multiple Komax and Ross mixing applications, as well as for the modified screw conveyors premixers . Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) method was used for modeling of fluid flow through Eulerian multiphase model, for the prediction of particle displacement within the various static mixers configurations. Fifteen horizontal screw conveyors with invariant pitch, with modified geometry and different screw length , with some additional elements welded on the helix were tested for the possibility of granular material mixing during the material transport (granulated zeolite).
The results of the numerical simulation are compared with appropriate experimental results, according to relative standard deviation criterion (RSD). Application of this model provide the optimization of the geometry and parameters of mixing systems taking into account the quality of the mixing process and the cost of the final product.

Congo / Modeling, development and testing of hydro turbines to use on typical water falls rivers of DR Congo

Katond Mbay, Jean-Paul 20 December 2013 (has links)
Congo has an electricity service rate that ranks as the lowest in the world (less than 1% in rural areas) despite its large hydroelectric potential estimated at 100,000 MW. To increase the rate of access to electricity by constructing small hydropower plant, it is imperative to use simple technology, reliable, robust and inexpensive. The Archimedean screw turbine appears to be an appropriate solution to these requirements. We have designed and manufactured locally (in Lubumbashi) a test bench for Archimedean’s screw turbines having two blades only and a large pitch p function of β ( β = 30 ° and β = 45 °, β being the orientation angle of the blade on the screw cylinder). The goal is to simplify manufacturing and reduce the amount of steel used for the screw relative to the screws used in Europe or in USA. The test bench has allowed the experiments with six configurations combining the slope of the screw (α = 22.5 °, 30 ° and 37.5 °) and the pitch p (with varying rotation speed). The optimal combination appeared to be the configuration of the screw inclined at α = 22.5 ° relative to the horizon and with an helix β = 45 ° on the cylinder of the screw. The second best configuration has an inclined screw α = 30 ° and the helix which is oriented β = 45 °. These two configurations each have a global efficiency of 89% and 86%, respectively.
