Paul Hindemith's use of the trumpet in the Kammermusik works

This study investigates the nature and extent of Paul Hindemith's use of the trumpet or cornet in the seven works which comprise the Kammermusiken. The trumpet or cornet is assessed on the basis of technical and musical criteria with regard for its functional responsibilities within the context of each work. Specific evaluative criteria include pitch range, ensemble placement, melodic motion, articulation, rhythmic character, dynamic range, and special effects. Functional responsibilities are generally identified as either thematic or supportive on the basis of an examination of the musical setting in which the trumpet or cornet is found. Thematic roles are further distinguished, where appropriate, as either primary or secondary. Supportive responsibilities are identified as either harmonic, harmonic and rhythmic, or harmonic and structural.Each of the seven works is addressed in a separate chapter. General information concerning instrumentation, expressive character, and specific comment regarding unique stylistic features is provided. A technical and musical assessment of the utilization of the trumpet or cornet is included. Performance demands and interpretative concerns are addressed, as well. A summary of the trumpet's or cornet's use in the work concludes each chapter while a comprehensive comparison of its use in all seven compositions is provided in the final chapter. Representative musical excerpts from the score are provided in separate appendixes.The trumpet serves almost equally in thematic and supportive roles and is generally called upon to perform in a predominantly marked or martial manner. While all passages are well within the normal performance capabilities of the professional or advanced collegiate player, an assured technical facility is required in order to accommodate the variety of intervallic combinations and contrasting melodic motion which typifies Hindemith's harmonic language. / School of Music

This thesis has examined the moon and sun imagery of Yeats's Last Poems (1936-1939), contrasting the diminution and transmutations of astronomical imagery with its rich symbolic development from 1889 to 1936. Using lyric poetry of The Collected Works of W. B. Yeats and selected prose works of William Butler Yeats, the study has traced the multiple antinomial forces embodied in moon and sun and the change in imagery that marked Yeat's poetic growth. The thesis has discussed vestiges of overt moon and sun imagery in Last Poems, Yeats's reasons for the changes that characterize his career, and the substitutes that replaced moon and sun.

The purpose of this study is to understand the principles of the “School of Tárrega” by analyzing Tárrega’s thirty elementary-level studies and twenty-five intermediate- and advanced- level studies according to books written by Pujol and Roch. Tárrega set the modern sitting position based on the guitar of luthier Antonio Torres’, and two of Tárrega’s outstanding pupils, Roch and Pujol, wrote three volumes of methods, which are the foundations of the “School of Tárrega.” Therefore, the principles of the School of Tárrega, such as sitting and playing positions, right- and left-hand playing positions, right- and lefthand finger movements, and sound quality are first discussed in this study. Then, the fiftyfive guitar studies are discussed and analyzed in groups according to their different technical purposes, such as scale playing, arpeggio playing, blocked chords, barré technique, slur technique, and special sound effects. When applicable, the modern technique will also be visited and compared for understanding the similarities and differences between the modern approach and the School of Tárrega. / School of Music

In today’s competitive market, survival and response to customer needs and expectations are enabled through high-quality products for low costs – quality products provided by suppliers fulfilling today’s quality-requirements for a low price. Companies have until recent years selected suppliers only according to a pricing structure, leaving other criteria’s, such as quality, behind. The purpose of this master thesis is therefore to investigate quality aspects that must be considered from a supplier evaluation perspective and design a simple evaluation tool for first-time supplier selections. Both new and existing suppliers will be tested with the tool according to information given during a case study made at Flexit AS, a Norwegian ventilation-systems company looking to introduce a structured approach for selecting suppliers. Through an extensive literature- and empirical study, where a survey, of which evaluation criteria’s to be included in the evaluation tool, was conducted together with several both semi-structured and unstructured interviews, a foundation for the design of the tool was presented. Quality management systems and quality performance measurements, such as rejection rate and delivery precision, are considered as fundamental aspects to consider when assessing a supplier. Acceptance levels of approval are set according to in-house objectives. If any evaluation tool including quality should be usable, an in-house quality system must therefore first be implemented by the in-house company – a notable improvement recommended to the case company. The design of the tool given from the thesis provides the evaluator with an opportunity to visualize and compare existing suppliers according to five criteria’s including cost, together with an additional spreadsheet for evaluation of new suppliers put forward as a foundation and an indicator if new suppliers are considering quality on a basic level.

This thesis provides a critical evaluation of certain selected works of Hayashi Fumiko and demonstrates the unique literary achievement of this important modern Japanese woman writer who is as yet little known in the West. This thesis contends that the element of struggle, so omnipresent in this writer's life and works, is the essence of her artistic vision. Herein, struggle is examined not only in terms of theme, characterization, imagery, and style but also as a major determining factor in the development and progression of narrative itself. Four principal struggles are discerned: (1) for art and beauty, (2) for love, (3) for maturity and independence, and (4) for survival. It is shown also that the first three of these categories of struggle belong to what in Hayashifs writings may be designated as the inner world of human feeling. This inner world is opposed to and in conflict with the outer world of hardship and necessity in which the struggle for survival takes place. Five major stages in the development of Hayashifs work are proposed, and representative works are discussed in each period to illustrate the developments and modifications of the struggle element. Chapter One, dealing with the period 1922-1930, discusses Hayashi's early poetry and her first major work, Hōrōki. Here, the inner struggle for art and beauty is affirmed amidst the hardship of the outer struggle for survival. Chapter Two discusses the period 1931-1934, and focuses on the short stories "Fūkin to sakana no machi'' and "Seihin no sho." In these works the inner struggles for love and for maturity are brought to the fore as Hayashi's early autobiographical fiction reaches the peak of lyrical expression. In Chapter Three, covering the period 1936-1942, Hayashi's change to "objective" fiction is examined, in particular her first full-length novella, Inazumaf in which the inner struggle is weakened and debilitated by the struggle with outside circumstances. Chapter Four covers the years 1946-1949, a period which represents Hayashi's full maturity. In Ukigumo, her masterpiece, the forces of the inner struggle assume demonic proportions, overpowering the outward struggle for survival and success. In Chapter Five, Hayashi's final years, 1950-1951, are examined. Here, in Meshi, the author attempts to reconcile the dichotomies of the inner and outer elements of struggle as she portrays the lives of ordinary people, striving to find self-fulfillment in the modern world. The thesis concludes that the element of struggle provides a primary tool by which the works of this author can be fully appraised and appreciated. By providing an explication of this element, this thesis not only offers an insight into the mechanisms of Hayashi's genius but also presents a much-needed introduction to and interpretation of this writer's work. / Arts, Faculty of / Asian Studies, Department of / Graduate
