The need for a youth development programme in Reservoir Hills : the perceptions of secondary school learners.Haridas, Meena Narsinhdas. January 2007 (has links)
This research study sought to determine secondary school learner perceptions of the need for a youth development programme in Reservoir Hills. The study begins with a literature review related to youth development in the context of social capital within the framework of social development. The main focus of the research, however, was to gather information regarding the youth development programmes the youth were currently accessing, as well as youth perceptions of their needs and pressures, and how their needs can be met. A descriptive survey research design guided the study. The entire Grade 9 populations of the two secondary schools in Reservoir Hills were asked to complete structured questionnaires under the supervision of their teachers. This group was considered to best represent youth at the entry level of this phase of development. Quantitative methods were used to analyse the results from which conclusions and recommendations were drawn. The study findings indicate that the majority of the respondents were not attending youth development programmes. Those who were accessing these programmes were doing so through school, as well as religious and sports organizations. The youth expressed a keen interest in participating in any programmes that might be offered. Surprisingly, they were requesting access to the most basic activities such as soccer, netball, volleyball, etc. The y also showed an interest in non-sporting activities such as computer literacy. Youth demonstrated awareness of the pressures facing them in terms of drugs, sex and alcohol. They were of the view that involvement in youth development programmes would be critical to assisting youth direct their energies towards positive development as individuals and as youth in general, and thus contribute to the creation of a better society. / Thesis (M.A.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2007.

Women’s centres to the rescue : an examination of the contributions women’s centres have made to communities throughout British ColumbiaRucci, Cristina 11 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to illustrate the way in which feminist-based organizations -
specifically women's centres - have sought to fulfill the unmet social needs of women and
children living throughout British Columbia. This thesis achieves this end through a number of
different means. A literature review provides background on feminist planning and an overview
of the history of the women's movement in Canada. An examination of B.C. women's centres,
which includes a close look at the similar and unique services offered, demonstrates the positive
contributions made by centres. A case study, which thoroughly reviews the history of one
specific centre (the North Shore Women's Centre), shows how women's centres evolve over
time in order to meet the changing needs of the women in their communities. An analysis
explores the opportunities and constraints that the members of women's centres have faced in
trying to carry out their various activities.
This thesis has been based on, and has utilized, the goals and methodologies created by feminist
planners. In doing so, it takes women's needs, interests, and experiences into account, and aims
to make a contribution to knowledge that women can use to improve their lives

Needs of caregivers of stroke survivorsWaterfall, A. Christine January 2002 (has links)
Stroke is a medical event that has serious consequences for the survivor, his family, and society. Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States, and two-thirds of stroke survivors are permanently disabled with one-half of these survivors considered severely impaired. The economic burden from stroke is estimated to be $30 billion annually in health care costs and lost productivity. This study described the needs of 35 caregivers of stroke survivors within 24 hours of discharge to home from an acute care "safety net" teaching hospital in Indiana and how well those needs were met. Two subscales, (a) the Need for Information and (b) Patient Care Needs, of the Home Caregiver Need Survey were used. The theoretical framework for this study was the Neuman Systems Model. The stroke survivors were over 50 years old (77.1 %), half were African-American and half were Caucasian, and about a quarter were minimally impaired (25.8%) and less than a quarter were very impaired (22.9%) cognitively and/or physically upon discharge to home. Their caregivers were their children (48.6%) or spouses (28.6%), half of whom worked full-time outside the home. Most (85.7%) caregivers were female, in good health, and with no experience (81.8%) in caring for patients at home. / School of Nursing

Regional hog supply response to stabilization programmes in CanadaChurches, Malcolm C. January 1988 (has links)
The objective of this research was to determine the nature of hog supply response in Quebec, Ontario and Alberta over the period 1968-1986. Special emphasis was placed on the role of government stabilization programmes. The research examined the development of the North American hog industry and described the various federal and provincial assistance programmes that were available to hog producers over this period. Using an adaptive expectation framework, separate linear equations for each province and three pooled data equations were specified. The equations were estimated using four procedures namely, Hildreth-Lu, instrumental variables, quasi-generalized least squares and augmented least squares. Results indicate that (1) stabilization programmes exhibit positive effects in Quebec and negative effects in Alberta and Ontario, although in no province are these coefficients statistically significant and (2) that response to risk varies across provinces. This research concludes that other factors including vertical integration and western grain market conditions may have been important factors in production shifts during this period.
