Exploring children's emerging conceptions of their participation rights and responsibilitiesMurray, Ellen Jane Anne 06 December 2017 (has links)
The case study documented in this dissertation emerged in response to the United Nations Decade for Human Rights Education, and it promoted the participation rights accorded all children in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. A unifying theme of this research was listening to the children's voices during their participation in a Primary-level curriculum for children's rights education entitled The World Around Us. This research was conducted within one Grade 3 classroom of nineteen students over a three-month period, when qualitative data were systematically collected via interviews, narratives, and observations.
The purpose of this qualitative research was to explore how curricular experiences influenced the child participants' emerging conceptions of their participation rights and responsibilities, with a view to benefiting future curriculum materials for children's rights education. This research led to identifying learning and teaching strategies, which promoted the children's emerging conceptions, in light of the research goal of informing educational practice. In addition, this research led to devising a framework of participatory indicators, which reflected the child participants' emerging conceptions of their participation rights and responsibilities, in light of the research goal of building educational theory. / Graduate

Children's experiences of play therapyRichards, Vanessa 10 September 2012 (has links)
M.A. / This qualitative study will research five children's experience of long-term play therapy, from the perspective of the child. In exploring and describing the children's experience, the study will be a tentative delving into the 'inner workings' of one approach to play therapy, developed by this researcher in her private clinical practice. The research will aim to begin to make explicit the 'sub-text' of play therapy; that is, to give a voice to the child patient's usually unarticulated experience of the helping process. By directly researching the child's experience of play therapy from the perspective of the child, the study will represent a departure from the emphasis clinicians and researchers have historically placed on their theories and professional roles in therapeutic practice and discourse: Gardner, (1993) for example, in his account of the development of play therapy techniques in the twentieth century, reviews a broad range of classical and contemporary texts, all of which promote the central role of practitioners and their theories. Further, as noted by Spinelli (1994:77), "somewhat amazingly, given the large amount of studies dealing with therapy and therapists, there exist very few exhaustive studies that focus exclusively on the client's experience of therapy.'

This dissertation has explored the origins of the field of Behavioral Disorders via a qualitative approach. In order to collect data, interviews were conducted with respondents who were selected via purposeful sampling. All respondents have had a significant impact on the field of special education as evidenced by scholarship and leadership throughout their careers. Data analysis of the interview transcriptions was accomplished through the utilization of computer software. The data indicated six areas/topics that were seen among respondents as being significant to the development of the field of Behavioral Disorders.

Koori kids and otitis media prevention in VictoriaAdams, Karen January 2007 (has links)
Otitis media and consequent hearing loss are known to be high in Koori communities. Previous research on otitis media in Koori communities has focused on its identification, treatment and management. Little research has focused on the prevention of otitis media. Victorian Aboriginal communities often have small populations which result in small sample sizes for research projects. Consequently use of traditional quantitative methods to measure of change arising from health interventions can be problematic. The aim of the research was to describe Koori children’s otitis media risk factors using a Koori research method in order to develop, implement and evaluate preventative interventions.
