The thesis begins with an introductory chapter that explains the problems that short story theorists encounter when they try to define the short story genre. Part of the problem results from the lack of a definition of the short story in the Aristotelian sense. A looser, less traditional definition of literary genres helps solve some of the problem. Six short stories follow the introduction. "Billy and Me," "Queen of Hearts," "The Whiskey Man," and "Psychedelic Trash Cans" are representative of traditional short stories. "Mourning Coffee" and "Seven X Seven" might very well fit into other genres, but even these stories fit a loose definition of the short story genre.

"Realizing the importance of the subject of literary awards, the interest in short stories, and the value of good anthologies to the small library the writer chose for her study a short story award--The O. Henry Memorial Award Prize Stories. The first twenty-five years of that anthology paralleled an era in which she was interested. The study has been confined to the first, second and special prize-winning stories of those years (1919-1943). "Bingo" and Other Stories is a collection of short stories whose individual primary characters are forced to make profound changes in the wake of a discovery that comes about as a result of a tragedy or strained personal relationship or a combination of both. This collection is multigenerational in its collective scope and it reflects influences that come from the African-American and Southern literary traditions. In addition, it uses realism to create the settings for and sensibilities of the characters who populate the stories. This paper documents the decrease of short stories in three women's magazines from 1940 to 1970 and concludes that the decline results from readers turning to other sources for escape from housework. Chapter II describes patterns in plots, themes, characters, settings, and other elements of these stories. Chapter III shows the lack of influence which changes in writers, editors, and social and political developments in America have had on these short stories. The conclusion is reached that the magazine article is replacing magazine short stories.

This manuscript is a collection of short fiction pieces workshopped in creative writing classes throughout my undergraduate and graduate career at Florida Atlantic University, influenced by the experimental and form-driven nature of some of the writing workshops as well as other courses I took during my years at the university. This work is especially preoccupied with the opposed and intertwined natures of genre fiction and literary fiction.
