Recognizing groundwater as a site development limitation factor

Davis, James Rodrick January 1984 (has links)
This study observes how the size and type of land development can often be limited by the supply of fresh groundwater sources. Multiple-use recharge basins were found to be effective in diverting pollutants around a potable source of groundwater, thus reducing the chances of that source becoming contaminated. A computer-aided numerical model was used to simulate groundwater flow and its responses to recharge basins in a hypothetical situation.Through a series of trials, artifical recharge was able to abate the problem of groundwater contamination in certain geohydrologic conditions. Optimum rates of recharge and discharge were determined to effectively divert contaminated groundwater around several types of developments. From these findings, land use options and development intensities can be safely recommended for areas which otherwise may have been nearly undevelopable. / Department of Landscape Architecture

Modeling of multiple-optical-axis pattern-integrated interference lithography systems

Sedivy, Donald E. 22 May 2014 (has links)
The image quality and collimation in a multiple-optical-axis pattern-integrated interference lithography system are evaluated for an elementary optical system composed of single-element lenses. Image quality and collimation are individually and jointly optimized for these lenses. Example images for a jointly optimized system are simulated using a combination of ray tracing and Fourier analysis. Even with these non-optimized components, reasonable fidelity is shown to be possible.

Acoustical Analysis Of A Multipurpose Hall By Computer Simulation Method: Metu Northern Cyprus Campus Auditorium (ncca) As A Case Study

Yilmaz, Tansu 01 January 2005 (has links) (PDF)
In this study, impulse response of a multipurpose hall, namely METU Northern Cyprus Campus Auditorium (NCCA) is analyzed and the acoustical quality of the auditorium is evaluated. Suggestions to increase the acoustical satisfaction has been made and to overcome the probability of bass-rise caused by the noise of HVAC systems, a proposal has been made to control low frequency sounds by introducing the volume resonators for the specified frequency. For the study, Odeon, which is used effectively in computer based acoustical simulation studies, is used for the analysis part. In the analysis, a 3D drawing of the hall has been produced by the help of the exact dimensions derived from the original submission of the project by the permission of the authorities.

Development and verification of a simplified building energy model

Valade, Rachel Elizabeth 12 January 2009 (has links)
The purpose of this research is to develop and verify a simplified and concise building simulation model suitable for high-level applications such as preliminary design or for embedding into adaptive control systems. An actual complex modern building and its energy system has been monitored. The monitored energy performance of this building has been compared with the empirical performance predicted by two simulation modeling programs and, alternatively, by a simplified single-zone model. This project is composed of several related tasks. The first component is the monitoring of the energy consumption rates, pertinent environmental data, and load indicators of the new Klaus Advanced Computing Building on the Georgia Institute of Technology's Atlanta campus. The Klaus building was chosen because it represents a typical non-residential building. Subsequently, these findings have been compared with results from DOE-2 and eQUEST, well established energy simulation modeling programs. These comparisons allow for an empirical verification of the modeling program for Atlanta conditions. Finally, a simplified single-zone building model has been developed, and its predictions compared with the empirical data and with the results of the more complex programs. The results verify both the more complex programs and the single-zone model, and also demonstrate the use of a single-zone model for future work and predictions.
