Clear Sky Index : Framtagen med enkortsdator och webbkameraEnström, Oskar, Klavebäck, Erik, Muhrbeck, Rasmus January 2015 (has links)
A future sustainable society need to rely more on renewable energy sources. One of the most promising alternatives is solar power. However, there are inherent fluctuations accompanied with solar power, for example if the shadow of a cloud blocks the sun light on a whole solar cell it will not produce any power. This will cause problems with connecting the solar panels to the power grid. Clear sky index (CSI) is a measurement of how much of the sky that is covered by clouds, and is a key parameter for planning of large scale solar panels. This report describes the manufacturing and programming of a cheap device for calculating the so called clear sky index (CSI) over a large portion of the sky. The device contains a Raspberry PI computer with a camera module, and utilize a program that through the computer-vision library OpenCV can calculate the CSI of the images provided by the camera. The resulting prototype costs about 800 SEK, and has possibility to be improved by adding a fish-eye lens to cover a bigger area, or to be water resistant by improving the casing, without exceeding a 1000 SEK price tag.

The Mauritius radio telescope and a study of selected super nova remnants associated with pulsarsDodson, R. G. January 1997 (has links)
The just completed Mauritius Radio Telescope, a 2km by 1km T shaped synthesis array designed to repeat the 6C survey but for the Southern hemisphere, is described. Full details of the instrument hardware, and the software designed to interpret the output of the hardware are presented. The early results from the instrument, in the shape of maps of known SNR with possibly associated pulsars, are shown. In combination with publicly available X-ray data and published maps at other frequencies, conclusions on the associations are drawn. The sources described are G5.4-2.3 with PSR 1757-23, G8.7-0.1 with PSR 1800-21, G315.4-2.3 with SN 185, G320.4-1.2 with PSR 1509-58 and G343.1-2.3 with PSR 1706-44.The MRT project is an example of hardware simplifications being made possible by the increasing power and sophistication of software and computation. The sheer speed with which calculations can be done nowadays has allowed corrections to be applied post facturn, where previously it would have to be fixed in hardware (at much greater cost).

Site Lines: Building in Earth and SkyKelly, Harry James IV 03 February 2015 (has links)
At Jones Point in Alexandria, Virginia, it is easy to perceive the movements of the tides, the stars, and the sun, or to point to the markers and structures that dot the peninsula. However, the rules that govern the heavenly bodies and the intended purposes of the earthly constructions are not as readily discerned. Situated here, a marina and sailing school on the banks of the Potomac River finds order in the astronomical rhythm and man-made history of Jones Point, and they structure the significance of the site through building.
This project first aspired to re-imagine the ceiling and the floor as primary architectural elements. The floor and the ceiling became an analogy: The floor is the Earth, the ceiling is the sky. This building orders its site by unifying the diverse elements at Jones Point and allows one to find orientation in the terrestrial as well as the celestial.
It is by building that we put ourselves in relation to the world. We imbue materials and our constructions with significance. In Architecture, it is the construction of our ideals, desires, and wonder -- rendered in material -- that shelters us from the biting cold or the beating sun. We draw our stories in the sky and we build them on the earth. / Master of Architecture

Part four of the Rhodes University Skymap ProgramWright, Michael Robert January 1989 (has links)
The results of the fourth part of the Rhodes University Skymap Program are presented. The observations cover the area of sky between right ascension 14h00m and 02h30m and declination -26⁰ and + 13⁰ at a frequency of 2.3 GHz. Contour maps of this region, with a resolution of 0.38⁰, are presented. Various methods of reducing the effect of the Galactic disc emission are analyzed. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of one of these methods in the production of a flat base level. The filamentary structure of the North Polar Spur is enhanced and results are obtained which support current theories of the origin of this object. The HII region surrounding Ophiuchi is examined in detail. A number of parameters are derived for the HII region. The spur associated with the HII region S54 is also examined. A listing of 1105 point sources appearing in the maps is presented. The limiting flux density of this listing is 0.5 Jy

Observation and processing of 2.3 GHz radio astronomy survey dataJonas, Justin Leonard 15 April 2013 (has links)
The results of the second part of the Rhodes University Southern Sky Survey at 2.3GHz are presented. The area surveyed extends from 12hOO to 22hOO right ascension between declinations -63º and -24º. The observation technique and data reduction processes are analyzed. Digital data processing techniques used to enhance and display the data are dicussed. The results show that the Galactic emission extends as far as 40º latitude. Filamentary and loop-like structures are found superimposed on this general emission. Many of these features are unidentified as yet. A large region of emission is found to coincide with the Sco-Cen stellar association. A lower limit for the ionizing flux from the stars in the association is derived. All of the non-confused extragalactic sources with flux densities greater than O.5Jy are listed. The flux densities of these sources have been measured and any possible extended features are noted. / KMBT_363 / Adobe Acrobat 9.53 Paper Capture Plug-in

Death in the Gobi: a Case Study of Skeletal Trauma from the Hets Mountain Cave in MongoliaRamazani, Christina Marie 06 May 2017 (has links)
This study represents a contextualized analysis of the perimortem trauma and postmortem treatment of an assemblage (n=9) of naturally mummified individuals recovered from the Hets Mountain Cave in southern Mongolia. The assemblage dates AD 1434-1651, a period characterized by political instability and widespread conflict. Analysis of the trauma was completed utilizing radiological evaluation of 3D CT data. The perimortem trauma and postmortem treatment are contextualized within documentary and archaeological data on contemporary Mongolian mortuary and cultural practices to understand the social identities of these individuals. The trauma patterns are consistent with execution methods reserved for higher status Mongolians; the mortuary treatment is suggestive of a hybrid of Shamanistic and Lamaistic mortuary practices reserved for higher status Mongolians. These findings speak to the utility of case-study based analyses in complementing more top-down historical studies for understanding the effects of political instability and widespread conflict upon individuals during poorly documented time periods.

Valoración Sky Airlines S.A.

Secrets, silence and family narrative : Joy Kogawa's Obasan and Sky Lee's Disappearing moon cafeDenomy, Jennifer. January 1997 (has links)
Both Joy Kogawa's Naomi Nakane and Sky Lee's Kae Ying Woo attempt to overcome silence and secrecy in order to reconstruct their families' histories, particularly their matrilinear histories. Their task is problematic: Naomi has no mother, and Kae has too many maternal figures battling for control. Both narrators approach their texts (and their searches for identity) with a degree of ambivalence. In Obasan, Naomi's uncertainty over the family identity she attempts to uncover manifests itself in the silences which pervade the text. Over the course of the novel, she pushes aside silence, in the process giving rise to two problematic issues at the work's centre: first, the adult Naomi who narrates must re-enter the experiences of her younger, silenced self; secondly, Naomi must overcome an oppressive silence in order to tell a story both centred around and driven by silence. / Whereas Naomi is reluctant to delve into her history, Kae is eager to recover what has been hidden from her. Instead of the numerous silences which pervade Obasan, Kae's growing ambivalence surfaces as narrative unreliability. Disappearing Moon Cafe is strongly mediated by Kae, who acknowledges the extent to which her authority is problematic; in reconstructing her past, she often reinvents it as well. / This paper explores the parallels between Naomi's and Kae's searches for family, and the ways in which similar journeys find radically different narrative expression. While the text of Obasan resists the tendency to inscribe the silences of its family narrative, Disappearing Moon Cafe battles its desire to fill in the blanks, to romanticize and invent.
