Ten educational slide-narrative programs on orchidsMicklow, Frederick A. 03 June 2011 (has links)
The present creative project was undertaken to prepare educational programs on orchids. The author has worked with orchids for a period of ten years during which time he has developed expertise in the taxonomy, culturing, photography and collection of this family of plants.The creative project involved the selection of 385 35 mm slides from the author's collection, and the development of narrative which illustrates basic information about the Orchidaceae. The programs were developed for audiences possessing at least a modest botanical background. Two specific groups expected to use the programs are botany students at Ball State University and members of the American Orchid Society.The material on orchids was divided into ten topics: (1) Definition of an Orchid, (2) Diversity of Orchids; (3) Pollination of Orchids, (4) Hybridization of Orchids; (5) Propagation of Orchids; (6) Culture of Orchids; (7) Culture and Problems of Orchids; (8) Species of Orchids; (9) Buying and Showing of Orchids; (10) Orchid Collecting in Paraguay. Video streaming is becoming a major channel for distance learning (or e-learning). A tremendous number of videos for educational purpose are capturedand archived in various e-learning systems today throughout schools, corporations and over the Internet. However, making information searchable and browsable, and presenting results optimally for a wide range of users and systems, remains a challenge.In this work two core algorithms have been developedto support effective browsing and searching of educational videos. The first is a fully automatic approach that recognizes slides in the videowith high accuracy. Built upon SIFT (scale invariant feature transformation) keypoint matching using RANSAC (random sample consensus), the approach is independent of capture systems and can handle a variety of videos with different styles and plentiful ambiguities. In particular, we propose a multi-phase matching pipeline that incrementally identifies slides from the easy ones to the difficult ones. We achieve further robustness by using the matching confidence as part of a dynamic Hidden Markov model (HMM) that integrates temporal information, taking camera operations into account as well.The second algorithm locates slides in the video. We develop a non-linear optimization method (bundle adjustment) to accurately estimate the projective transformations (homographies) between slides and video frames. Different from estimating homography from a single image, our method solves a set of homographies jointly in a frame sequence that is related to a single slide.These two algorithms open up a series of possibilities for making the video content more searchable, browsable and understandable, thus greatly enriching the user's learning experience. Their usefulness has been demonstrated in the SLIC (Semantically Linking Instructional Content) system, which aims to turnsimple video content into fully interactive learning experience for students and scholars.

The vulnerability and movement behaviour of slow moving slides are investigated. The study focuses on slides moving at rates ranging from a few millimetres a year like extremely slow slides, to 13 meters per month, the upper velocity range of slow slides. An extensive review of the effect of pore pressure changes on movement reactivation of shallow and moderately thick slides is presented. The time dependent behaviour of fine geotechnical materials is also reviewed.
Although the literature has reported many cases where the accumulation of slow movements led to a complete collapse of buildings, failure of embankment slopes carrying highways or railways and serviceability problems for dams and bridges, little attention has been paid to the vulnerability to slow moving slides. Hence, this thesis aims to provide more insight into the actual damage to facilities founded on slow moving slides. More than fifty cases of extremely slow, very slow and slow slides adversely affecting urban communities, highways, railways, bridges, dams and linear infrastructure are reviewed. The survey enables the development of new damage-extent scales that use the slide velocity to help assess the degree of damage to a facility founded on a landslide-prone area.
Vulnerability is an important component of the specific risk. The other component is the hazard or the probability of occurrence of a certain damaging phenomenon like landslides. Defining the causal factors of the landslide movements and their contributions to the total movement is an important step towards the evaluation of the hazard. Hence, the geomechanical behaviour of two typical deep-seated and moderately thick slides, the Little Chief Slide and the Little Smoky Slide, respectively, are investigated. The objective is to determine all the triggers and causal factors of movement and to quantify their contribution to the total movement. The study involves groundwater flow modeling of one of the two slides, an extensive field monitoring of pore pressures and displacements and an investigation of the creep behaviour both in the field and in the laboratory. The outcome of the study shows that the total movement of each of the two slides can be separated into creep and seasonal movements. The contribution of each component is quantitatively defined. The quantification of the different causal factors aids in choosing the proper mitigation option in addition to predicting the future movement rates after the chosen remedial measures have been installed. / Geotechnical Engineering

A study and historical update on the photographs of William Arthur SwiftChambers, Linda E. January 1984 (has links)
The project had two primary goals. The first was to study the photographs of William Arthur Swift, a commercial photographer who lived and worked in Muncie during the 1920s and early 1930s. An exhibition of his work was held at the Ball State University Art Gallery in 1984 and raised two issues which this project addressed.One question concerned the photographic equipment used by Swift. By examining his negatives, studying literature, and interviewing people who knew Swift, the models used by the photographer. This was then compared to equipment used by photographers today.Another issue concerned the current status of the subjects Swift photographed. Upon examining his work it was discovered that some of the subjects still exist. Many others do not, yet they have modern day counterparts. The second goal of the project was to conduct an historical update to compare a selection of Swift's subjects historical information about Munciechanges that have occurred.It was concluded that historical photographs serve as it showed the to the present. The modern photographs were then displayed alongside Swift's photographs. A comparison revealedas useful educational tools. They may also be considered entertaining. The recommendation was made that photographic work of this nature be continued since it will provide an informative view of this time period to future viewers.
