High Arctic submarine glaciogenic landscapes : their formation and significanceFreire, Francis Fletcher January 2016 (has links)
This thesis is focused on studies of glacial and slope morphology in the high Arctic of western Greenland shelf and the Molloy Hole seafloor spreading area, based on high-resolution acoustic methods and other geophysical data. The main purpose is to improve our understanding of glacial dynamics and associated processes in the marginal region of a large marine-terminating ice sheet. Newly acquired data, together with existing datasets have been compiled to create bathymetric models, which were used to study the seafloor landscape and its preserved record of glacial and sedimentary processes. The new bathymetric models were used with novel processing tools combined with seismic profiles, sub-bottom profiles and overlays of geological- and gravimetric maps to describe the observed landforms and interpret causal relationships. The main conclusions are: 1) The underlying geology is an important control on the cross-shelf trough (CST) dimensions in western Greenland. This is likely due to the influence of underlying geology to the frictional resistance of the ice flow over the basement rock. Our observations show that ice streaming in areas with basaltic bed-types cause minimal over-deepening of the main trunk of the trough, which also has weaker lateral boundaries allowing the ice stream to shift flow direction more easily. CSTs on the Cenozoic-Mesozoic sedimentary basins indicate a stronger eroding and more focused paleo-ice streams. 2) Bedrock lithology has an important part in controlling the location of the head-to-trough transition in CSTs of western Greenland. The areas where the head’s network of channels converges to form the main trunk of the trough are mostly located on the boundary from crystalline to sedimentary bedrock. These areas are also marked by distinct over-deepenings. 3) Preglacial conditions such as faults/fractures and lithological properties of the basement rocks in western Greenland served as an important control on the erosional potential of the glacial processes, particularly on a local scale. Faults and fractures have led to the topographic steering of the ice flow that causes further excavation and erosion of the bed, while uneven erosion patterns, based on differences in glacial morphological features, is observed between areas of adjacent bedrocks with different lithology. 4) The occurrence of trough mouth fans is suggested to be controlled mainly by the shelf width, which governs the glacial flow length along available sediment sources. It is also controlled by the continental slope steepness, which may be too steep for sediment fans to accumulate, or may cause slope failure which eventually transports the sediments to the deep basin. 5) The maximum ice extent in west Greenland extended towards the shelf edge. Geomorphological evidence of ice margin standstills and slow retreat (grounding zone wedges and transverse moraines) in some areas reveal a multi-stage deglaciation process. 6) The view of a highly dynamic paleo-Greenland ice sheet is supported by the presence of a large number of CSTs which hosted ice streams, and evidence of ice stream flow-switching throughout one or several glaciations. 7) The influence of glacial sedimentary processes extends into the deepest areas of the Arctic Ocean. A submarine landslide, here termed the Molloy Slide, has been described in the Molloy Hole in the Davis Strait between Greenland and Svalbard. Ocorrência e identificação de Cryptosporidium e Giardia em amostras de água superficial destinada ao abastecimento público do estado de São Paulo / Occurrence and identification of Cryptosporidium and Giardia from surface water catchment in Sao Paulo, BrazilBreternitz, Bruna Suellen 01 March 2018 (has links)
Estudos de revisão sobre surtos associados à transmissão hídrica revelaram que os protozoários parasitas Cryptosporidium parvum e Giardia duodenalis (sinonímia: G. lamblia e G. intestinalis) são os principais responsáveis pelo maior número de casos registrados em todo o mundo. A contaminação das águas superficiais que servem ao abastecimento público por estes protozoários representa risco à saúde humana e animal, pois ambos parasitas apresentam resistência à cloração, processo convencional utilizado para desinfecção em Estações de Tratamento de Água (ETAs).Em vista desta lacuna, o presente estudo propõe identificar espécies e genótipos de Cryptosporidium e Giardia a partir de 128 amostras de águas superficiais de 11 mananciais do estado de São Paulo, de acordo com o Método 1623.1 (USEPA, 2012). Para identificar estes parasitas, foi realizada a recuperação dos (oo) cistos a partir de lâminas raspadas, seguindo o protocolo adaptado da USEPA, em seguida, utilizou-se o PCR em tempo real para identificar os genes 18S rRNA para Cryptosporidium e SSU para Giardia. Os resultados mostraram que a frequência de ocorrência desses protozoários nos pontos de captação foi de 29,7% para Giardia e 30,4% para Cryptosporidium. Os cistos estavam presentes em 10 dos 11 pontos de captação com frequências que variaram de 17 a 100%, e concentrações que variaram de <0,1 (Limite de Detecção=0,1) a 17,7 cistos /L, o que evidenciou a baixa qualidade dessas águas. Os oocistos ocorreram em uma frequência de 17 a 50% nas amostras positivas com concentrações que variaram de <0,1 a 11,5 oocistos/L. O ensaio de PCR em tempo real detectou um total de 81,4% (57/70) de amostras positivas para Cryptosporidium hominis-parvum-meleagridis e 21,4% (15/70) amostras positivas para Giardia duodenalis. A frequência de ocorrência desses agentes patogênicos e as altas concentrações de espécies antrópicas encontradas constituem um cenário de grande preocupação do ponto de vista da saúde pública, considerando-se que amostras foram coletadas dos locais de captação para o abastecimento público de água. / Review studies on waterborne outbreaks have been showing that Cryptosporidium parvum and Giardia duodenalis (synonym: G. lamblia and G. intestinalis) are the primarily responsible for the highest number of the cases recorded worldwide. Contamination of surface waters catchments by these protozoa is a risk factor to human health because both parasites are resistant to chlorination, which is a conventional process used for disinfection in water treatment plants (WTP). The present study aimed to identify species of Cryptosporidium and Giardia recovered from surface water catchment samples from 11 municipalities from the State of São Paulo, totalizing 128 samples. Quantification of both parasites was carried out according to method 1623.1 (USEPA, 2012). In order to identify parasites, the recovering of (oo)cysts from slides followed USEPA´s protocol by scraping slides, then Real Time PCR using the 18S rRNA genes for Cryptosporidium and SSU for Giardia were carried out. Results showed that the frequency of occurrence of these protozoa at the catchment points was 29,7% for Giardia and 30,4% for Cryptosporidium. Cysts were present in 10 of 11 catchments points with frequencies varying from 17 to 100% with concentrations ranging from <0.1 (Limit of Detection=0.1) to 17.7 cysts/L, which put in evidence the low quality of water. Oocysts occurred in a frequency from 17 to 50% in positive samples with concentrations ranging from <0.1 (LD) to 11.5 oocysts/L. The real-time PCR assay detected a total of 81.4% (57/70) of positive samples for Cryptosporidium hominisparvum- meleagridis and 21.4% (15/70) samples positive for Giardia duodenalis. The frequency of occurrence of these pathogens and the high concentrations of anthropic species found is a concerning scenario for human health, considering samples have been collected from catchment sites for public water supply.

This thesis maps the existence, extent and diverse applications of the magic lantern in the Australasian colonies and brings to light a cultural practice that had remained largely invisible in histories of photography, cinema, and popular culture in nineteenth century Australasia. The thesis demonstrates that the magic lantern was popular as entertainment on both a private, domestic and a public scale. It traces its widespread adoption in two broad institutional contexts, the educational and the religious, and shows how this wide-ranging practice and consumption was supported by developing social and commercial infrastructure in the colonies and a network of touring lanternists. It argues that the magic lantern located the Australasian colonial culture within a global one centred around the consumption of visual technology and an international exchange of images. Colonial audiences were not, however, merely the passive recipients of a globalised imagery or culture. They were active contributors to it, constructing their own meanings in response to imported images. The thesis argues that, while the magic lantern functioned to affirm a sense of imperial identity in both colonisers and the colonised, it was adapted locally to the creation of colonial, intercolonial and regional identities, as an alternative to a dominant Eurocentric mass-mediated world view. Colonial practitioners applied this powerful medium to the generation of images at a local level that reveal an enthusiasm for colonial events and stories, a sense of place, and a celebration of local identity on the big screen.

Frequency and initiation mechanisms of submarine slides on the Fraser Delta frontStacey, Cooper D. 31 January 2014 (has links)
The Fraser delta hosts a population of over 500,000 including the municipalities of Richmond and Delta and the Vancouver International Airport. The main arm of the Fraser River has been fixed in place by construction of a jetty focusing sediment deposition on the Sand Heads area. There is a history of submarine slide events at the delta crest which pose substantial risk to coastal infrastructure near the delta front. A submarine channel, characterized by prominent levee deposits, extends seaward from the Sand Heads area.
In this study, sand beds in cores from levee overspill deposits are dated using excess 210Pb activity. They are interpreted as the downstream deposits of channelized turbidity currents generated by liquefied slide material. Sedimentation is characterized by sandy mud, interpreted to be deposited continuously by river plume suspension fall-out, and two distinct kinds of sand beds which represent two genetically different processes. The first type of sand bed (Facies 6) is thick, sharp based and clean, often showing classic Bouma turbidite elements including a massive sand base with laminated sands fining up to a mud top and is interpreted as the deposit from slides involving large volumes of material at the upper reaches of the tributary channels. The second type of sand bed (Facies 5) is characterized by muddy sand, has gradational contacts, and is interpreted as a low density deposit from either river generated turbidity currents or distal turbidites from smaller slide events. Facies 6 sand beds often occur as sets of 2 to 4 beds and individual bed sets have been dated to approximately the same ages of known large-scale slide events. Facies 5 sand beds occur more frequently and generally occur after periods with high flow.
Sediment cores show three distinct phases of levee growth within the past 100 years approximately. A basal phase consists of very thick beds of medium sand that are interpreted to represent the early stage of channel-levee evolution when continuous overspill occurs during turbidity current events. The second stage is characterized by thick sets of frequent Facies 6 fine grained sand beds separated by less than one year of mud deposition. These sand beds are interpreted as representing a period of levee growth where channel relief is low and overspill events occur often. The third phase is characterized by thick mud intervals with less frequent fine sand beds. Phase 3 is interpreted to reflect a state when levee growth has increased channel relief to a height greater than that of the typical channelized turbidity current. In the third phase, sediment bypass is common and only larger density flows are capable of spilling onto the levees.
Deposits interpreted to represent large slides have a return interval of 10 to 15 years during the past 40 years. Deposits of smaller events occur on average every four to five years. Event ages are compared to large spring floods from the Fraser River and seismic activity to determine any causal relationship. There is some relationship between ages of event beds and river flood years, but the largest sand beds do not correspond to unusually large flood years or seismic activity. O Campo de Miranga, localizado no Compartimento Central da Bacia do Recôncavo, é um importante produtor de óleo e gás. As rochas reservatório portadoras de hidrocarbonetos aqui apresentadas constituem-se de corpos arenosos gerados por fluxos gravitacionais subaquosos intercalados por folhelhos e pertencem a Formação Maracangalha (depositada no Cretáceo Inferior). Com a descrição de 775 m de testemunhos, definiu-se 8 fácies deposicionais e 6 deformacionais para o intervalo estudado. O agrupamento de fácies em conjuntos que apresentam feições estruturais e genéticas similares permitiu a proposição de Associações de Fácies cujas interpretações são: AF1 - lobos turbidíticos distais; AF2 - canais e/ou lobos turbidíticos arenosos; AF3 - franjas de sistemas turbidíticos conglomeráticos; AF4 - deslizamentos ou regiões proximais de escorregamentos; AF5 - porções mais deformadas de corpos de deslizamentos a escorregamentos; AF6 - escorregamentos altamente móveis, plásticos a fluxos de detritos. Foi definido um datum na porção intermediária da formação constituído por uma espessa seção pelítica. Depósitos distais da AF6 dominam a porção basal do intervalo estudado e são sucedidos verticalmente (em direção ao datum) por intercalações entre turbiditos (AF2) e escorregamentos (AF5). Imediatamente acima do datum ocorrem níveis conglomeráticos (AF3) que são sucedidos verticalmente por um domínio onde se intercalam deslizamentos (AF4), escorregamentos (AF5) e turbiditos (AF2), definindose uma grande sucessão progradacional para a Formação Maracangalha na área estudada. O disparo desses fluxos provavelmente associa-se a movimentação de falhas durante estágio sin-rifte responsáveis por intensa sismicidade e remobilização de frentes deltaicas. Um mecanismo auxiliar associa-se ao intenso diapirismo argilocinético. A conectividade lateral rastreada em seções sísmicas é baixa e os melhores reservatórios do campo são os representantes da AF4 e AF2. Por critérios preditivos é possível determinar os intervalos mais propícios para a ocorrência desses corpos. / The Miranga Field, which is located in the Central Compartment of Reconcavo Basin, is an important oil and gas producer. The bearing hydrocarbon reservoirs presented here are composed of sand bodies generated by subaqueous gravity flows inserted between shales, belonging to the Maracangalha Formation (deposited during the Lower Cretaceous). Through the description of 775 m well cores, 8 depositional and 6 deformational facies were defined for the interval studied. Trigger mechanisms responsible for the genesis of gravitational flows are probably associated with faults activities during the syn-rift stage which led to intense seismic activity and caused the destabilization of sediments in delta fronts. An alternative cause for triggering may have been intense diapiric shale movements. The lateral connectivity traced in seismic sections is low and the sand bodies that should constitute the best reservoirs in this field belong to AF4 and AF2 categories. It is possible to determine the most favorable intervals for the occurrence of these sand bodies using predictive criteria.

2013 / This study deals with the pitfalls and standards associated with the digitisation of
photographic artefacts in formal collections.
The popularity of the digital medium caused a rapid increase in the demand for
converting images into digital files. The need for equipment capable of executing the
task successfully, the pressure on collection managers to display their collections to the
world and the demand for knowledge needed by managers and operators created
pressure to perform optimally and often in great haste.
As a result of the rush to create digital image files to be displayed and to be
preserved, the decisions that are being made may be questionable. The best choice of
file formats for longevity, setting and maintaining standards to guarantee quality digital
files and consultation with experts in the field of digitisation as well as attention to best
practices are important aspects which must be considered.
In order to determine the state of affairs in countries with an advanced
knowledge and experience in the field of digitisation, a comprehensive literature study
was done. It was found that enough information exists to enable collection managers in
South Africa to make well informed decisions to ensure a high quality of digital
collection.
By means of questionnaires, a survey was undertaken amongst selected
Western Cape image preservation institutions to determine the level of knowledge of the
managers who are required to make informed decisions. The questionnaire was
designed to give insight into choices being made regarding the technical quality,
workflow and best practice aspects of digitisation. Comparing the outcome of the
questionnaires with best practices and recommended standards in countries with an
advanced level of experience it was found that not enough of this experience and
knowledge is used by local collection managers although readily available. In some
cases standards are disregarded completely.
The study also investigated by means of questionnaires the perception of the
digital preservation of image files by fulltime photographic students and volunteer
members of the Photographic Society of South Africa. It was found that uncertainty exist
within both groups with regard to file longevity and access to files in five to ten year's
time.
Digitisation standards are set and maintained by the use of specially designed
targets which enable digitising managers to maintain control over the quality of the
digital content as well as monitoring of equipment performance. The use of these
targets to set standards were investigated and found to be an accurate and easy
method of maintaining control over the standard and quality of digital files.
Suppliers of digitising equipment very often market their equipment as being of a
high quality and being able to fulfil the required digitisation tasks. Testing selected
digitising equipment by means of specially designed targets proved however that
potential buyers of equipment in the high cost range should be very cautious about
suppliers' claims without proof of performance. Using targets to verify performance
should be a routine check before any purchase.
The study concludes with recommendations of implementing standards and it
points to potential future research.

Imediatamente acima do datum ocorrem níveis conglomeráticos (AF3) que são sucedidos verticalmente por um domínio onde se intercalam deslizamentos (AF4), escorregamentos (AF5) e turbiditos (AF2), definindose uma grande sucessão progradacional para a Formação Maracangalha na área estudada. O disparo desses fluxos provavelmente associa-se a movimentação de falhas durante estágio sin-rifte responsáveis por intensa sismicidade e remobilização de frentes deltaicas. Um mecanismo auxiliar associa-se ao intenso diapirismo argilocinético. A conectividade lateral rastreada em seções sísmicas é baixa e os melhores reservatórios do campo são os representantes da AF4 e AF2. Por critérios preditivos é possível determinar os intervalos mais propícios para a ocorrência desses corpos. / The Miranga Field, which is located in the Central Compartment of Reconcavo Basin, is an important oil and gas producer. The bearing hydrocarbon reservoirs presented here are composed of sand bodies generated by subaqueous gravity flows inserted between shales, belonging to the Maracangalha Formation (deposited during the Lower Cretaceous). Through the description of 775 m well cores, 8 depositional and 6 deformational facies were defined for the interval studied. These facies were grouped together according to structural and genetic characteristics making it possible to define Facies Associations with the following interpretations: AF1 - distal portions of turbidite lobes; AF2 - channels and/or sandy turbidite lobes; AF3 - borders of conglomeratic turbidite systems; AF4 - slides or proximal parts of slumps; AF5 - distal portions of the slides bodies or slumps; AF6 - highly mobile slumps to debris flows. A datum was chosen in the middle portion of Maracangalha Formation which consists of thick layer of shale. Distal deposits (AF6) dominate the basal portion of interval studied and they are succeeded vertically (toward to the datum) by layers interbedded between turbidites (AF2) and slump deposits (AF5). Immediately above the datum, conglomeratic intervals (AF3) occur and they are succeeded vertically by layers interbedded between slides (AF4), slumps (AF5) and turbidites (AF2), defining a great progradational succession to Maracangalha Formation in the studied area. Trigger mechanisms responsible for the genesis of gravitational flows are probably associated with faults activities during the syn-rift stage which led to intense seismic activity and caused the destabilization of sediments in delta fronts. An alternative cause for triggering may have been intense diapiric shale movements. The lateral connectivity traced in seismic sections is low and the sand bodies that should constitute the best reservoirs in this field belong to AF4 and AF2 categories. It is possible to determine the most favorable intervals for the occurrence of these sand bodies using predictive criteria.
