Modeling, Fabrication, and Characterization of a Bragg Slot Waveguide with a CavityYagnyukova, Mariya 11 December 2013 (has links)
This thesis encompasses a theoretical analysis, the fabrication, and optical characterization of a novel compact Bragg Slot Waveguide with a Cavity (BSWC). Strong light confinement in the low refractive index slot region formed by two silicon slabs on a silicon dioxide substrate [1] makes this structure useful for optofluidic, sensing, and optical trapping applications. The transmission spectrum of the BSWC can be engineered through the dimensional variations of the waveguide and through the refractive index change of the surrounding medium. BSWC is compact and can be integrated with various components on a chip for increased functionality.
The results in this thesis show a good agreement between analytical and experimental results, while emphasizing the increasing importance of atomic-scale imperfections as a result of fabrication on the nano-scale. The impact of the slot width, slab width, and the cavity length on the waveguide transmission spectrum is investigated.

Functional Plasmonic Mesh ArchitecturesLin, Charles Chih-Chin 15 July 2013 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to establish a platform for implementing nanoscale plasmonic slot waveguide (PSW) devices that can interface with dielectric technology for hybrid silicon-plasmonic interconnect applications. For waveguide excitation, an orthogonal junction coupler that operates based on momentum matching is analyzed and then experimentally demonstrated to have coupling efficiency of 50 +/- 2 % between 450 nm wide silicon waveguide and 50 nm wide PSW across a 200 nm bandwidth. Next, for designing scalable optical components with multiple-input multiple-output capability and high fabrication tolerance, two dimensional PSW mesh structure that utilizes simultaneous power distribution and interference within a network of intersecting PSW junctions is introduced. Finally, a closed-form model for PSW mesh structures is derived by incorporating the characteristic impedance model into the scattering matrix formalism. The model can handle arbitrary combination of junctions and has less than 5 % discrepancy when compared to Finite-Difference Time-Domain results.

Effects of Mental Imagery on Gambling BehaviorWhiting, Seth William 01 August 2011 (has links)
The influence of a mental imagery task was examined to determine if imagining completing the gambling act could satiate the participant on gambling-related reinforcers and subsequently reduce gambling behavior. Thirty participants underwent a mental imagery task consisting of either imagining gambling on a slot machine or placing quarters in to a laundry machine. The results showed a statistically significant reduction in trials played on the slot machine for those who completed the gambling imagery task when compared to those in the laundry imagery group. Clinical implications and future directions are discussed.

A Design of Crossed Exponentially Tapered Slot Antenna with Multi-Resonance Function for 3G/4G/5G ApplicationsOjaroudi Parchin, Naser, Basherlou, H.J., Abd-Alhameed, Raed 01 October 2020 (has links)
Yes / In this research work, a planar crossed exponentially tapered slot antenna with a multi-resonance function is introduced. The presented antenna design is ascertained on a low-cost Rogers 5870 dielectric with a circular schematic. The antenna is designed to support several frequency spectrums of the current and future wireless communications. The configuration of the design contains a pair of crossed exponentially tapered slots intersected by a star-shaped slot in the back layer and a bowtie-shaped radiation stub with a discrete feeding point extended among the stub parts. The crossed exponential slots exhibit a wide impedance, and the star slot generates an extra resonance at the upper frequencies. For S11 ≤ -6, the antenna provides a wide operation band of 1.7 to 5.9 GHz supporting several frequency bands of 3G, 4G, and 5G communication. The fundamental characteristics of the proposed slot radiator are studied, and good performances have been achieved. / European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement H2020-MSCA-ITN-2016 SECRET-722424.
