An evaluation of the SACLA Rehabilitation Worker project in Cape Town, South Africa, 1992-1993Loveday, Marian Patricia January 1993 (has links)
This dissertation reports on an evaluation of the home visiting programme of the SACLA Rehabilitation Worker project against the background of the socio-economic context of the community and the history of the project. The evaluation had two aims. Firstly, it aimed to highlight the programme's strengths and weaknesses so that the work could become both more efficient and more effective. Secondly, it aimed to establish whether the SACLA rehabilitation project is an effective model of a community based rehabilitation project on which other local projects could be based. Quantitative data was collected by interviewing the caregivers of disabled children who were involved in the project. In-depth interviews with the rehabilitation workers provided qualitative data which was used to confirm the validity of some of the quantitative data. The foremost findings were that the mothers were very positive about the support received from the RWs. The majority of the caregivers remembered the activities that they had been taught by the RWs and performed them well. Poor communication with the caregivers and a lack of skills on the part of the RWs gave rise to a number of problems. A number of changes highlighted by the evaluation were suggested. In conclusion, the project was found to be an effective model of local community based rehabilitation on which other projects could be based.

Provision of guidance and counselling services in the schools in the Transkei sub-region of the Eastern CapeNzeleni, Lineo Primrose 01 1900 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to find out about provision of guidance and counselling in the schools in the Transkei sub-region of the Eastern Cape.
Guidance and counselling services are crucial to the success of lifelong learning policies, providing assistance and advice to learners so that they make better informed and future educational and career choices suitable for them. Through guidance and counseling services, students develop a clear understanding of self, their attitudes, abilities, interests, ambitions, resources and limitations from career counselling. They are also guided into various entrepreneurial activities, training, advancement and other benefits for sustainable self-reliance and self-worth. Students are able to achieve and live fulfilled lives and contribute meaningfully to the development of their country in all spheres of life once they receive appropriate guidance and counselling services. Guidance and counseling services look at the holistic development of the learner by taking into account the psycho-social, intellectual, emotional and physical development aspects of the learner within the context of the learner’s environment.
The provision of guidance and counselling programmes and services is the shared responsibility of all school staff. A team approach should be employed, wherein all staff members have specified roles to play. School counsellors play a key role in planning and implementing programmes and service. Guidance and counselling programmes and services are systematically planned to meet the needs of all learners and are infused into the daily activities of schools.
Using a quantitative research design, the research sample included Department of Education (DoE) Officials and teachers in seven districts in the Transkei sub-region of the Eastern Cape.
Questionnaires were used to collect data. Descriptive statistics in were used to analyse the provision of guidance and counselling in the schools in the Transkei sub-region of the Eastern Cape.
The results revealed that guidance and counselling is necessary in schools and that it should be provided in all schools in the districts. / Psychology of Education / M. Ed. (Specialisation in Guidance and Counselling)

The role of the social worker in the reunification of foster children with their biological parentsDe Villiers, Angelique 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (M Social Work)--Stellenbosch University, 2008. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A combination of an exploratory and descriptive study together with an approach
containing elements of both the quantitative and qualitative approach was chosen in
order to obtain knowledge of and insight into the role of the social worker in the
reunification of foster children with their biological parents. The motivation for this study
arose from the awareness of the lack of South African literature on the role of the social
worker in the reunification of foster children with their biological parents as well as the
lack of accessible information about social workers’ use of reconstruction services in the
reunification of foster children and biological parents in South Africa. The researcher
became aware of this lack in South African literature about family reunification services
and programmes delivered during a preliminary search done on the Nexus Data-Base
(1999). The aim of the study is therefore to gain a better understanding of how social
workers render reconstruction services to contribute to the reunification process of
foster children with their biological parents in terms of the Child Care Act 74 of 1983.
The literature study first focused on the process and procedures of statutory removal of
children within the South African context of the Child Care Act 74 of 1983 to gain a
better understanding of the circumstances where the removal of children is justifiable
according to the Act. The literature study was also undertaken to gain insight into the
decisions social workers make when placing children in foster care as well as the
services social workers deliver to foster parents, biological parents and foster children
during reconstruction service delivery. The role of the social worker in the delivery of
foster care and reconstruction services was explored, where the social development
and strengths perspectives have become the norm, guiding social workers to engage in
a range of interventions as stipulated in the White Paper for Social Welfare (Ministry for
Welfare and Population Development, 1997) and the Integrated Service Delivery Model
(2004). he researcher involved 21 social workers in this study who render reconstruction
services with both children and their parents in selected non-governmental
organizations (NGOs) rendering child and family welfare services in the Strand,
Stellenbosch, Somerset West, Kuils River and the Department of Social Services in
Paarl.
The results of the investigation largely confirmed the findings of the literature study
namely that a large number of children are removed from parental care (the biological
parents), and need reconstruction services from child welfare organizations in South
Africa where social workers are the catalysts in rendering such services. Social workers
however, due to the lack of sufficient resources such as time and sufficient numbers, do
not have the ability to deliver reconstruction services to sustain and enhance the prompt
return of children to their biological parents.
The results therefore gave a good indication of social workers’ delivery of reconstruction
services. Social workers should have their workload reduced, enabling them to provide
more therapeutic services to foster children, biological parents and foster families in the
foster care process; government should support welfare organizations financially,
increasing the probability of welfare organizations to employ more social workers, and
thereby increasing the number of social workers rendering reconstruction services;
social workers should through cooperation with other welfare organizations deliver
foster care services to increase resources such as knowledge and skills to assist foster
children and their biological parents in their reunification.
The recommendations were aimed at services relating to assessment, prevention and
intervention with this vulnerable and marginalized group. The recommendations also
included that future research be done in order to focus on the specific reconstruction
services that could increase the probability of foster children returning to their biological
parents. This may decrease the large number of foster children currently staying in
foster care for longer than the restricted period of two years.
in die persentasie van maatskaplike werkers wat rekonstruksie dienste lewer;

The mentoring of officers commanding in the SA Military Health Service (SAMHS): a military social work perspectiveRadebe, Chrystal 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (M Social Work (Social Work))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009. / An exploratory research design together with a quantitative research approach were
chosen to determine whether military social workers possess the necessary
knowledge, skills and values to mentor Officers Commanding (OCs) in the South
African Military Health Service (SAMHS). The motivation for this study was based on
questions the researcher asked as to whether there was a link between the methods
in social work intervention processes, supervision and mentoring processes. During
the preliminary investigation, the researcher found that no prior research under this
specific subject was undertaken. The researcher also determined from her role as
consultant to Officers Commanding in the SAMHS, that whereas military social
workers received supervision upon joining the South African National Defence Force
(SANDF), OCs, received no formal mentoring. It was also found that although a
mentoring policy in the Department of Defence (DOD) existed, no evidence existed
that a mentoring programme was implemented in the SAMHS. The goal of the study
is therefore to provide military social workers with a framework of a mentoring
process for Officers Commanding in the SAMHS.
The literature study firstly focused on describing the military social work environment
in which the military social worker is employed, as well as theoretical frameworks that
guide the military social worker’s task. Although more than one theoretical framework
was discussed, the main focus was on the systems theory and ecological
perspective. The work environment of the OC was also included, as well as the
challenges of their functions, tasks and roles in the SAMHS. Primarily, the literature
study explored the knowledge, skills and values of the military social worker and the
mentoring process.
The sample that was selected for this study was 46 military social workers that
represented all the chief military social workers in specialist posts and those with a
higher ranking from Captain to Colonel. A quantitative investigation was undertaken
by means of a questionnaire which was completed in groups in the respective
provinces.
The results of the investigation largely confirmed the findings of the literature study
namely that military social workers do fit the requirements to mentor. These
requirements to mentor were evident in the results of the knowledge, skills and
values of military social workers and their understanding of the parallels between the methods in social work, supervision and the mentoring process. The results gave an
indication of the knowledge, skills and values of military social workers to mentor
Officers Commanding in the SAMHS, and the framework of the mentoring process
and how it relates to the casework, group work and supervision processes in social
work.
The recommendations demonstrated that a central body should be identified to coordinate
and plan a mentoring programme in the SAMHS. The recommendations
also include that the Directorate Social Work should provide clear guidelines on how
military social workers should implement the DOD Mentoring policy, and ensure that
military social workers are trained in staff development methods and its processes.
The recommendations included further research: both quantitative and qualitative
research by means of questionnaires and interviews with OCs, as well as monitoring
and evaluation of the mentoring process. This information will benefit military social
workers in their training as mentors. In implementing these recommendations,
military social workers will be able to contribute significantly to the development of
Officers Commanding in the SAMHS and the profession of social work.

An investigation of burnout amongst medical social workers working in children's wardsLukelelo, Nomvuyo 04 1900 (has links)
On t.p.: Master of Arts in Social Work (Welfare Programme management) / Thesis (MA(MW))--Stellenbosch University, 2004. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Medical social workers working in children's wards are more prone to
burnout because of the stressful nature of their work. Because social
work requires emotional involvement, it is not uncommon for workers
to be emotionally drained and frustrated, which might lead to
burnout. Stress amongst social workers is an important issue, as a
stressed workforce can negatively affect the quality of service. This
study was undertaken with the aim of providing guidelines for
handling stress amongst medical social workers working in children's
wards, in order to promote job satisfaction and enhance work
performance.
Chronically ill children who are hospitalised, often suffer from
behavioural and emotional problems that require social work
intervention, which in turn puts pressure on the social worker.
Concurrent stressors on the children and their families may exhaust
their normal coping capacity and further complicate the child's
adaptation to hospitalisation. The role of the medical social worker is
to provide social support to the child and the family in order to
promote positive coping in the child during and after hospital
treatment. The demands put on the social worker by hospitalised
children can cause stress, which could adversely affect their work
performance and job satisfaction.
Social workers therefore, have to carefully select an appropriate
practice framework when dealing with hospitalised children. This
entails the selection of appropriate perspectives, theories and models
to ensure effective intervention. These frameworks provide structure
and directive to social work intervention, and combined with
supervision, can promote job satisfaction amongst medical social
workers. The study was undertaken amongst medical social workers working in
paediatric wards within hospitals in the Cape Metropolitan area. The
empirical study focused on an investigation of factors, which might
contribute to the experience of burnout amongst the social workers.
Work-related stressors playa major role in increasing the likelihood of
burnout amongst social workers. If these stressors are not properly
dealt with they might lead to burnout amongst medical social workers,
which will have a direct bearing on the child's benefit from medical
services. A combination of both organisationally based and
individually based strategies should be implemented in order to
overcome job-related stress and to prevent burnout.
Maatskaplike werk vereis emosionele betrokkenheid.
Oormatige stres by maatskaplike werkers kan 'n negatiewe uitwerking
op die kwaliteit van hul dienslewering hê. Hierdie navorsingstudie was
aanpassing by die hospitaalopset belemmer.
mediese behandeling, by pasiënte te vestig.
maatskaplike werk intervensie. Hierdie raamwerke bied struktuur en
rigting aan maatskaplike werk intervensie. Laasgenoemde, tesame met
Stellenbosch University http://scholar.sun.ac.za
superviste kan werkstevredenheid onder mediese maatskaplike
werkers bevorder.
Tydens 'n

Gesinsherenigingsdienste vanuit die kinderhuisLerwick, Susan 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2002. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: An exploratory study was undertaken to examine the possibility of rendering family
reunification services from within children's homes. The goal of the study was to
make recommendations with regard to the implementation of this service by
children's homes.
A literature study was undertaken to investigate the effect of a child's statutory
removal, examine the existing government policy regarding children and families.
The theory and unique characteristics of family reunification services were also
investigated.
The social workers from the four children's homes in the Western Cape that are
managed by a commission of the Dutch Reformed Church were involved in the
empirical study. The social workers each had to complete a questionnaire
regarding their opinion about the rendering of family reunification services from
within the children's homes. The results showed that the majority of the social
workers were in favour of the rendering of family reunification services, but they felt
that it should be undertaken in conjunction with the external organizations, that
referred the children to them. Several obstacles in the rendering of this service was
also identified by this study. It was also found that the majority of the children in the
children's homes have been there for longer than two years, which further
accentuated the necessity of this service.
Based on the findings of the literature study, as well as the results of the empirical
study recommendations were made regarding the implementation of family
reunification services as a co-operative effort between the children's homes and
other relevant external organizations. These recommendations are applicable to
other children's homes with cognisance of their individual differences.
gesinsherenigingsdienste as intervensiemetode.

The utilisation of community work within a military context : the role of the social workerBagnall, Karen 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MSocialWork)--Stellenbosch University, 2002. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Community work fulfils definite functions within the social work milieu and develops
according to a process. The SANDF does not possess any definite guidelines regarding
community work. The resultant consequence is that community work is not utilised to its
full potential in that the client system does not always receive a quality service.
The purpose of this study was to compose a framework for the Directorate of Social Work
within the SANDF, which can serve as a guideline for the possible formulation of a policy
document on community work within social work practice. The objectives of the study are
firstly to provide theoretical and practical guidelines which social workers in a military
setting can follow when utilising community work as a social work method of intervention.
Secondly, to explore the knowledge and skills of social workers in the military within the
SANDF regarding community work. Thirdly, the need for guidelines with regard to
community work within the SANDF, was explored. This study was confined geographically
to the social workers in the military of the Western Province. An exploratory study was
executed in order to achieve the stated goal and objectives. The research methodology
was a quantitative design being a data collection instrument in the form of a questionnaire.
The questionnaire was used to probe skills, knowledge perceptions and attitudes relating
to community work and to determine the impact of existing community programmes.
The empirical study enabled the researcher to draw certain conclusions. Although certain
misconceptions were evident, the respondents understood the term developmental social
work, community and community work, as well as the systems involved in the community
work process and the practice models. The most utilised social work method was
casework. The respondents who utilised community work made use of a community work
process. Most of the respondents utilised the social community education model in the
military. Most of the respondents indicated that guidelines for community work within the
SANDF would be helpful. Approximately thirty percent of the respondents experienced
problems while making use of community work as a social work method of intervention. A number of recommendations stem from the findings and conclusions. The social workers
knowledge with regard to community work needs to be updated. Practical opportunities
need to be provided to afford the social worker the opportunity to implement the newly
acquired knowledge. Community work guidelines need to be determined within the
SANDF, and need to be formulated into a policy document. Specific community work
posts, which include all disciplines, need to be created within the SANDF. Post-graduates
studies should be undertaken by social workers before being promoted into managerial
positions.
Tweedens is
