This research is directed to the analysis of the influence of the rate of loading or displacement and the specimen water inundation time on the shear strength of three structured tropical soils from the North Forest Zone of Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The laboratory testing program encompassed the following steps: (i) Direct shear tests performed in natural soil sample specimens at four different rates of displacement, and direct shear tests performed in natural soil specimen considering three inundation times and one specific rate of displacement; (ii) Consolidated drained triaxial tests performed in natural soil sample specimens at two rates of displacement. From a practical engineering point of view, the laboratory testing data support that the rate of displacement and the specimen inundation time does not affect significantly the shear strength of the tested soils.
