The effect of somatic awareness exercise on the chronic physical manifestations of the stress response

Das Neves, Michelle Karina Magalhaes 27 May 2013 (has links)
M.Phil. (Biokinetics) / Stress is an integral part of daily living and supports the ability to adapt. However, chronic activation without the ability to express the physical response results in overloading the physiological and psychological systems. Since urban South Africans are sedentary and experience high levels of stress, they are developing stress related chronic conditions and hypokinetic diseases (obesity, hypertension, depression). This study is aimed at decreasing the chronic physical manifestations of the stress response through somatic awareness exercise and aerobic exercise. The present investigation made use of a quantitative, comparative experimental research design over an eight-week period using pre- and post-tests. Participants were measured for psychological stress via a perceived stress scale and the chronic physical manifestations were measured via heart rate, blood pressure and body sway. The number of volunteers in the present study was 102 and they were recruited from corporate environments in the Johannesburg area. Their ages ranged from 18 to 65 years. The sample consisted of females (n = 42; % = 75) and males (n = 14; % = 25); white (n = 39; % = 69.6), black (n = 12; % = 21.4) and Indian (n = 5; % = 8.9) participants and non-smokers (n = 41; % = 73.2) and smokers (n = 15; % = 26.8). Untrained individuals were divided into 4 groups: a somatic awareness exercise (n = 9), aerobic exercise (n = 15), combination of somatic awareness and aerobic exercise group (n = 8) and a control group (n = 15). The aerobic group participated in aerobic activity, somatic awareness group in somatic awareness exercise and the combination group participated in both aerobic- and somatic awareness exercises. Individuals who trained were placed in a separate exercise group (n = 9) and had to add somatic awareness exercises to their weekly routines.

Impacts of Mindfulness Training on Mechanisms Underlying Stress Reduction in Teachers: Results from a Randomized Controlled Trial

Choles, Jaiya Rae 08 May 2018 (has links)
A teacher's ability to foster and sustain high quality learning environments for their students relies largely on their own coping abilities and mental health. However, due to the emotionally taxing nature of their profession, teachers are at increased risk for developing elevated levels of occupational stress and burnout. To help teachers cope with their occupational stress and other negative emotions related to their occupation, mindfulness-based stress reduction programs for teachers have been introduced through schools. Evidence for the effectiveness of such programs is promising, however few studies have considered underlying mechanisms that may be driving these effects. Using data collected as part of a randomized controlled trial, this thesis examines the impact of mindfulness training on three coping resources, namely, somatic body awareness, executive function, and emotion regulation. Additionally, this thesis examines whether development of these resources translate into improvements in teachers' occupational well-being--specifically indicated through reductions in their anxiety, depression, stress, and burnout. Results suggest that the mindfulness training significantly improves teachers' somatic body awareness, with evidence for improvements in teachers' emotion regulation reappraisal as well. Additionally, some mediation results were promising, however, no significant mediations were found for any of the coping resources on any of the well-being outcomes for teachers. By addressing these topics, the results of this thesis contribute to the current field's understanding of how mindfulness training works to improve well-being in teachers.

Viel, Greice de Barba 16 June 2015 (has links)
Submitted by Ana Guimarães Pereira (agpereir@ucs.br) on 2015-09-09T14:09:37Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertacao Greice de Barba Viel.pdf: 3288147 bytes, checksum: 15019c6f6a6a584e6246184e8b5e94d5 (MD5) / Made available in DSpace on 2015-09-09T14:09:37Z (GMT).
