Conceived in his soul : the relationship between spirituality and the practice of mission leadership as demonstrated through the example of J. Hudson Taylor

James Hudson Taylor is often proclaimed the Father of the Modern Faith Mission Movement. As the founder of the China Inland Mission (or modern day OMF International), it would seem that much of Taylor's legacy is indeed his pioneering work in missions and missiology. This is well worth the time and attention of researchers and students, as there is at least an assumption that many modern mission practices are patterned after Taylor's innovations. However, Taylor's life and legacy leaves the modern student with more than missiological principles. He also personally developed a unique and peculiar brand of biblical spirituality in the process of founding and leading one of the first modern faith-based, interdenominational mission societies. This research will seek to find connections between Taylor's peculiar brand of spirituality and his unique missiological leadership along with applications for the modern context. This will result in a qualitative description of Taylor's spirituality, missional leadership style along with connections with implications. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / M. Aristotle, Aquinas, and the history of quickening

This thesis examines a primary question raised by both Aristotle and Thomas Aquinas: What constitutes the beginning of a human being? Aristotle and Aquinas raise this question for very different reasons. Modern critical commentators revisit it for their own reasons, namely for the purposes of ethical debates surrounding conception and abortion. They frequently attribute the notions of delayed ensoulment and quickening to Aristotle. Through examination of the primary texts, I demonstrate that this attribution is erroneous. Aristotle contends that ensoulment is substantially complete at conception, though subject to gradual actualization throughout the lifespan of a human being; while Thomas suggests that conception is a process, requiring several substantial changes before a human soul is infused. I argue that Aquinas adapts Aristotle in accordance with his Christian theological commitments, and modern commentators follow him to develop their own notions of delayed ensoulment and quickening.

Augustinian virtue in the Dickensian world: the role of Christian friendship in the conversion of souls and the move toward the Heavenly City

The novels of Charles Dickens resonate with ancient and Christian moral messages: From plots and characters representative of Victorian ideals and concerns emerge themes that reflect centuries of moral, and, as I argue, specifically Augustinian, teaching. While the Christian overtones of Charles Dickens's novels are seldom denied, their Augustinian nature, their purpose, and Dickens's hopes for their effect are rarely given their proper due. In opposition to the postmodern idea of an increasing nihilism and despair in Dickens's message, I examine instead his steadfast fascination with and joy in the power of charitable friendships-friendships that embody goodness and the possibility for conversion, friendships that are especially noteworthy amid the societal darkness ushered in by the crises of faith that accompanied nineteenth-century industrialization, commercialization, and de-moralization. Preparing to highlight the undeniable moral value in both the rejected and realized friendships and conversions of Dickens's Martin Chuzzlewit, Bleak House, and Great Expectations, first I focus on true friendship as a necessary part of a soul's ascent developed in Plato's Symposium and Phaedrus, as well as in Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics, illustrating how these classical texts anticipate the Augustinian notion of a soul's transformation from the earthly city to the city of God. With this literary continuum thus established, I contend that the Heavenly City as it is reflected in the Dickensian world relies on its virtuous citizens, those true friends who consistently manifest Christian charity, humility, and forgiveness. / by Jill A.
