Geskiedskrywing in Die Huisgenoot, 1923-1949Joubert, Jurie Jacobus 11 1900 (has links)
status van 'n his- tories-wetenskaplike tydskrif* / This dissertation is an historic study of the historiography
which appeared in Die Huisgenoot during the period 1923 -
1949. The editor, J.M.H. Viljoen, himself a formally trained historian, purposefully promoted
historiography, which he published in Die Huisgenoot.
This dissertation is however, primarily concerned with the contributions of formally trained
historians. Consequently many contributions by amateur historians were not considered.
Historiography relating to specific periods and subjects is discussed and evaluated. In
particular book reviews which were an outstanding feature of this historiography, are evaluated
thoroughly. Similarly, letters of reaction to specific articles were also evaluated.
In conclusion, it is evident that Die Huiagenoot which was
published in the years 1923 - 1949, qualifies as an histori- cally-scientific periodical. / History / M.A. (History)

Critical factors for service quality in the intercity bus transport industryPan, Qi January 2008 (has links)
Thesis (M.Tech.: Marketing)-Dept. of Marketing, Durban University of Technology, 2008. xiii, 135 leaves. / South Africa will host the Soccer World Cup in 2010. About 2.7 million local spectators and 400,000 visitors need to be transferred to and from the 10 host cities in 43 days. This is a huge challenge to the intercity bus transport industry, because the current transport system may not meet the demand for one of the world’s largest sporting event.
The purpose of this study is to identify the current barriers to good service quality in the intercity bus transport industry. It focuses on the measurement of service quality and communication. In this research, the literature survey defined the service quality “gap” in this industry, identified the role of effective communication in the service delivery system, measured the variables affecting current service delivery using the SERVQUAL instrument, and prioritized the importance of the factors influencing service delivery in this industry.
A questionnaire with 25 questions was designed to collect data. This study used convenience sampling to select 400 passengers as a sample, viz. 348 South Africans and 52 foreigners at the Durban bus station, since Durban is one of the ten host cities of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The data was analysed using SPSS.
The results of this research pointed to the importance of external communication in the industry. Specific recommendations are made to improve the productivity, reduce vacancy rate and maximize the benefits to this industry in 2010 and beyond.

The factors that influence the marketing of professional services : a case studyEnerson, Meg 18 February 2014 (has links)
Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the Degree of Master of Technology: Marketing, Durban University of Technology, 2013. / Indications from the initial phase of this study suggest that key marketing fundamentals apparent in this business sector differ significantly from those generally recognisable in commodity, consumer product and industrial marketing. It is postulated that whilst these differences are probably symptomatic of particular professional service practice norms and business ethics the formulation, implementation and evaluation of effective marketing can be facilitated utilising appropriate contemporary marketing paradigms. This study explores the current marketing milieu in a multinational professional services organisation and attempts to identify factors relevant to marketing within the organisation. The objective of this study was to identify the critical factors that influence the successful marketing of professional services and to develop a framework to support these findings. In order to accomplish this objective, the study was undertaken from a phenomenological, rather than a positivist paradigm. An exploratory quantitative Likert-scale survey combined with the allowance for qualitative open-ended comments/ feedback was adopted. The quantitative study incorporated employees in managerial, middle and junior roles from the Specific Professional Services Organisation ‘SPSO’s’ national offices based in Durban, Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Cape Town. Marketing representatives from the ‘SPSO’s’ international offices were also included in the survey. It can be summarised that the main factors influencing the marketing of professional services can be grouped according to Strategy, Product/ Service, Price, Place, Promotion, Physical Evidence, People, Process, and Other. A framework was devised, comprising the nine identified groups of factors including correlating recommendations, as well as a tabular outlay of additional constructive qualitative comments recorded from respondents with recommendations.

Effect of photo-selective netting on postharvest quality and bioactive compounds in three selected summer herbs (coriander, marjoram and oregano)Buthelezi, Nana Millicent Duduzile. January 2015 (has links)
M. Tech. Agriculture / Herbs are a rich source of active phytochemicals (flavonoids, phenols, antioxidants, ascorbic acid, carotenoids, mineral salts and terpenoids. They are an ancient source of flavouring, aromatic compounds and medicine. Herbs have always constituted an important component of the human diet, adding variation and flavour to staple foods, as well as being used for food preservation. They are mostly processed because of the perishable nature of its leaves. The quality of herbs therefore can be improved by the manipulation of light quality during production and also by sheltering them from environmental hazards such as excessive solar radiation, wind and flying pests. In this study the effect of photo-selective netting technology (ChromatiNet™) (red, pearl and yellow) with 40% shading and commercial black net with 25% shading used as a control were investigated on herbs. Three herbs (coriander, marjoram and oregano) were planted. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the responses of the three photo-selective nets (red, pearl and yellow) and the black net (control) on quality parameters and bioactive compounds in herbs (in this study, coriander, marjoram and oregano).

Factors influencing community protests in the Mbizana MunicipalityNwafor, Christopher Ugochukwu January 2016 (has links)
Dissertation submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Masters: Public Management, Durban University of Technology, Durban, South Africa, 2016. / Protests are an integral part of many social, political and economic activities in societies all over the world, and the concept of protest is an on-going subject of scholarly endeavour. The occurrence of protests in South Africa, however, highlights significant deficit in meeting the huge expectations from a formerly disadvantaged majority of the population. Furthermore, the current preponderance of protest incidents in the Eastern Cape Province, and particularly in the Mbizana Local Municipality proffered the motive for this research.
The incidence of protests in the study area, in most cases, has been attributed to poor service delivery and the high expectations for improved social and economic development. While issues related to the delivery of basic services are attended to, the continued occurrence and increasing intensity of these protest incidents, has led to the argument that other factors are also at play.
Using a mixed methods approach, the study employed a questionnaire survey to elicit information linked to the incidence of protests. Two hundred and eighty respondents from three selected wards in the local municipality were randomly sampled, and three municipal officials were also interviewed to explore the factors influencing protest incidents in the study area.
Findings from the study point to the profusion of unresolved community complaints coupled with slow- paced provision of services, intra-party disagreements among political factions in the municipal council, and crime-related incidents; as factors responsible for protests in the local municipality. The study shows the preponderance of disagreements among political party members as a leading cause for protest incidents, unrelated to the provision of basic services. Also, the demand for justice among victims of criminal incidents was found to be another reason for the increasing number of protest events in the Mbizana Local Municipality. / M

Institutional and organisational arrangements for consumer-oriented community-based aquaculture in South AfricaNjokweni, Gugu 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MComm)—Stellenbosch University, 2015. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to investigate the organisational and institutional arrangements for sustainable
consumer-oriented community-based aquaculture in Hamburg, in the Eastern Cape, and Camdeboo and Saldanha
Bay, both in the Western Cape. Without these factors the development of aquaculture will be impossible or
unsustainable. The investigation will help in revealing whether markets exist or can be created, the required skills
and investment, and the appropriate institutional arrangements.
Two major research strategies were used, namely qualitative methods and case studies. The results revealed that, in
all three case studies, the products were not exported and had different target markets and marketing objectives.
There was a potential market for some of the products overseas. Leading pioneering firms, such as those that have
developed the technologies for aquaculture, control the value chain by setting, monitoring and enforcing the
parameters under which other value chain members operate.
The results further showed that, in all three case studies, the beneficiaries had some of form of schooling; some had
matric, while others had lower levels of education. In some scenarios, Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET)
training was offered, which combines aquaculture and life skills. Furthermore, unlike with kob, farming of species
such as mussel, oyster and catfish did not require such onerously high technical skills and monitoring of parameters.
There is no real need for high levels of education in the farming of these three species and, in most cases, people with
less than matric are trained in the various aspects of fish farming on the job.
Aquaculture appears to be a very capital-intensive industry. Apart from the capital investments, operational expenses
have to be incurred, even during the development phase. The absence of clear policy frameworks and legislation
results in contradictory messages. Choosing the type of business ownership may depend on many factors such as
financing, admin costs, tax implications, insolvency, business size and continuity.
The implication of the results of this study for community-based aquaculture is that investment from the public sector
and private sector is required, both in terms of capital infrastructure and operational costs. Communities should start
with simpler forms of aquaculture, such as oyster and mussel farming. Kob farming, on the other hand, requires high
technical skill. In all cases, the approaches initially require managerial, business and technical support and
handholding for community empowerment groups. When the development is in its infancy, community-based
aquaculture projects need to link and create distribution agencies that deal with marketing and distribution.
nvolhoubaar.
In sommige gevalle
is Adult Basic Education and Training(ABET)-opleiding aangebied, waar akwakultuur en lewensvaardighede
gekombineer is.
Daar is

Ready of not? Perceptions of the strengths and weaknesses of newly qualified medical microbiologists entering practise in South AfricaHoffmann, Rena 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Purpose of the Research:
To obtain more comprehensive data on the perceptions of strengths and weaknesses in Medical
Microbiological Pathology training against the background of rapidly changing pathology services.
Methods:
On-line surveys were conducted of potential employers and recent graduates of Medical Microbiology
and Clinical Pathology.
Results:
There were 15 employer respondents and 19 newly trained pathologist respondents out of the 88
pathologists that were identified to participate in the study. From the employers’ standpoint, the
majority expressed overall satisfaction with newly trained pathologists. Specific areas of deficiency
were Administration, Management and Research. In addition, almost a half of employers agreed that
the same amount of guidance and support for newly trained pathologists is needed now than was
required a decade ago. Newly trained pathologists did not appear to be inappropriately overconfident
in their abilities. In selecting new pathologists, employers perceived ability to work in a team, academic
knowledge and interpersonal skills as the most important applicant characteristics. When newly trained
pathologists were asked why they thought they were offered their position, the responses were very
varied, ranging from academic background to contractual obligations.
Conclusion:
We believe that with this study some insights were obtained into the perceived strengths and
weaknesses of newly trained pathologists entering Microbiology Pathology Services and that the results
of the study can be used as input for further discussions and training of pathology registrars.
Patologie opleiding in ag genome huidige vinnig veranderende patologie dienste.
Metodes:
gekwalifiseerde patoloeë nou dieselfde hoeveelheid bystand en ondersteuning benodig as patoloeë ‘n
dekade gelede.
opleiding.

Microfranchising alternative service delivery configurations – creating economic and energy resilience with the iShackRadmore, Jack-Vincent 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2015. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis emerges from the transdisciplinary work of the Enkanini Research Centre Association. Since 2011 this Association has focused on incremental informal settlement upgrading using Enkanini, Stellenbosch as a case study. This thesis explores whether management techniques and operational practises of microfranchising can support the establishment of alternative service delivery configurations in the context of in situ informal settlement upgrading. Following a transdisciplinary and multiple-case study research methodology, the theoretical argument is presented that a synthesis of the strengths and vulnerabilities of contemporary innovations from the urban development field augmented by the principles and management techniques of microfranchising could strongly influence future in situ informal settlement upgrading.
In exploring this argument two sub-questions are analysed in two free standing journal articles. The first article explores the potential synthesis of the fields of microfranchising and incremental urbanism, specifically alternative service delivery configurations in the context of in situ informal settlement upgrading. The literature on incrementalism and microfranchising originate from diametrically opposite ideological traditions, namely contemporary urban development and the management sciences. However it is argued that convergent patterns highlighted by points of coherence and convergence between the fields indicate that the proposed amalgamation has strengths potentially useful in addressing mutual weaknesses inherent to both perspectives. The intersection between these two distinct theories has potential to stitch together a new community fabric, deliver basic services, promote economic and social development and integrate the oppressed into the formal economy.
Building on this theoretical synthesis the second article explores potential best practice microfranchising cases. Three microfranchising cases are reviewed, Unjani Clinics NPC, African Honey Bee and Nuru Energy. Each case presents specific within-case lessons and microfranchising techniques. Cross-cutting themes from all three cases highlight knowledge, that when bolstered by everyday urbanism thinking, could be instrumental in developing a microfranchising consolidating, operating and scaling model for the iShack and the continued testing of the proposed synthesis.
