Previous issue date: 2012-09-13 / As the space and the city are objects of desires, interests, seduction, sedition,
appropriations, battles, victories, defeats, require to be analyzed historically. This research
investigates and discusses the construction of public spaces in Jardim do Serid? City,
backwoods of Rio Rio Grande do Norte, in the first decades of twentieth century, when the
municipality was chaired by Her?clio Pires Fernandes, who ruled from 1917 to 1930 and was
graduated from the University of Pharmacy of Recife, where he contacted the architectural,
political and artistic influences circulating in the capital of Pernambuco. In the first decades of
the twentieth century, the space of Jardim earns statements and practices, against the
discourse of modernity, which sought to justify the title of Veneza Seridoense . At the time,
the city had undergone several transformations in its public spaces through the construction
of the Butchery, the Market, the Public Roads connecting the city to other urban centers, the
building of the Bridge of the Pedra Lavrada Farm, the Elementary School Ant?nio de
Azevedo , the creation of the Music Band Euterpe Jardinense , the Literary and Recreative
Guild, the pavilion, the paving, tree planting, lighting, streets naming and listing of the annual
painting of households, the arrival of automobiles, mail and telegraph. The construction of
these new sceneries and the arrival of equipments generated impacts in the daily life of the
population and were received differentiated ways by individuals involved in the process,
which shows the tension between old and new, the relationship between history and space / Sendo o espa?o e a cidade objetos de desejos, interesses, sedu??es, sedi??es,
apropria??es, batalhas, vit?rias, derrotas; requerem que se analisem historicamente.
Esta pesquisa investiga e problematiza a constru??o dos espa?os p?blicos da
cidade de Jardim do Serid?, sert?o do Rio Grande do Norte, nas primeiras d?cadas
do s?culo XX, quando a municipalidade jardinense foi presidida por Her?clio Pires
Fernandes, que governou a cidade de 1917 a 1930 e era formado pela Faculdade de
Farm?cia do Recife, onde entrou em contato com as influ?ncias arquitet?nicas,
pol?ticas e art?sticas que circulavam na capital pernambucana. Nas primeiras
d?cadas do s?culo XX, o espa?o jardinense passa a ganhar enunciados e pr?ticas,
frente ao discurso da modernidade, que buscava legitimar o t?tulo de Veneza
Seridoense . Nessa ?poca, a cidade passou por diversas transforma??es em seus
espa?os p?blicos, atrav?s da constru??o do A?ougue, o Mercado, as Estradas
P?blicas ligando a cidade aos outros centros urbanos, a edifica??o da Ponte da
Fazenda Pedra Lavrada, o Grupo Escolar Ant?nio de Azevedo , a cria??o da Banda
de M?sica Euterpe Jardinense , o Gr?mio Liter?rio e Recreativo Jardinense, o
Coreto, o cal?amento, arboriza??o, ilumina??o, nomea??o e numera??o das ruas, a
pintura anual das resid?ncias, a chegada dos autom?veis, os correios e o tel?grafo.
A constru??o desses novos cen?rios e a chegada de equipamentos geraram
impactos no cotidiano da popula??o e foram recepcionados de forma diferenciadas
pelos sujeitos envolvidos no processo, o que mostra a tens?o entre o velho e o novo
na rela??o em hist?ria e espa?o
