Microprocessor controlled novel 4-quadrant DC-DC converterXu, Aidong January 1992 (has links)
The thesis describes a novel 4-quadrant DC-DC converter, supplied by a 28V DC voltage source, with an output voltage which may be continuously varied between +180V and -180V DC. A prototype 1.2kW DC-DC converter was designed and built, with emphasis given to the optimization of both the converter size and efficiency. This was achieved by means of a computer-based simulation study, which determined the optimal switching frequency and the size of the inductors and capacitors while maintaining a high unit efficiency. Mos-Gated Bimos switches, which feature the advantages of both mosfets and bipolar transistors, were developed to achieve high switching speed during high power operation. A digital-controlled DC servo system based on a 16-bit Intel 8086 microprocessor was designed, to provide both motor speed and position control. Speed and position detection circuits and the structure and the interfacing arrangement of the microprocessor system were designed and constructed. Several control algorithms were developed, including PID Control Algorithm and Current-Limit Control Algorithm. Based on open loop transfer function of the system, derived through mathematical modelling using the State-Space Averaging Method, the constants for the control algorithms were obtained to meet the dynamic performance specified for the system. Computer simulation was carried out to assist with the design of the converter and the control system. It is expected that drives into which the novel converter is incorporated will find many applications in situations where accurate positional control is required, particularly in battery-operated DC-servo system, such as satellite system, robots and some military vehicles.

AC motor control with special reference to the induced excitation of synchronous machinesHenrichs, Stefan Hubertus January 1991 (has links)
The frequency of a Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) power source can be adjusted to control the speed of an AC machine. Machine response in this mode of operation depends strongly on the quality of the chosen PWM switching strategy. Several methods of PWM waveform synthesis are presented and new methods are introduced. A novel Relaxed Spectrum (RS) algorithm based on a Fourier series expansion of the PWM signal is presented. The algorithm computes sinusoidal and non-sinusoidal switching patterns from a specified set of harmonic coefficients. The RS method is suitable for both full- and half-bridge PWM invertors. Unwanted harmonics inherent in a PWM signal, are exploited to induce excitation into the rotor of a synchronous machine. Rotor mounted diodes are used to rectify the induced currents. 'Rvo novel induced excitation methods are presented which permit accurate control of excitation levels. Whilst the first method uses a single Excitation Harmonic Voltage (EHV) for rotor excitation, an EHV pair is used in the second method to obtain improved machine response. The RS algorithm is applied to obtain a PWM waveform which approximates closest to a given specification. PWM switching patterns are obtained for most possible excitation conditions. Voltage Control Limit Functions (VCLF) are computed which define control limits for several excitation schemes. The response of a computer simulated machine model to an Ideal Test Voltage (lTV) is investigated to assess the performance of the new methods of machine excitation. Simulation reveals that the use of an EHV pair minimises motor torque pulsation. Optimum excitation ratios are then defined in terms of the harmonic indices of a given EHV pair. These ratios are shown to be largely independent of machine parameters. The RS method is used t(] compute generalised sets of PWM switching sequences which can subsequently be applied to a wide range of differently rated machines. Analogue Symmetrical Sample (SS) PWM waveform synthesis methods for induce( excitation are compared with their digital equivalents. It is shown that digital P~ techniques compare favourably and can provide higher excitation levels when a largl fundamental drive voltage is required.

Industriella distributionssystem för kyla : Kartläggning, injustering och varvtalsreglering / Industrial distribution system for cooling : Investigation, balancing and speed controlNilsson, Gustav January 2015 (has links)
Most industries have some type of cooling system serves the industrial process and comfort cooling. Operation and efficiency of the systems varies and when cooling problem occurs, it can depend on several reasons. Cooling problems may be due to a lack of cooling capacity, improperly aligned water flow or under-sizing of the distribution system and circulation pump. This thesis has been carried out in cooperation with Stora Enso Skoghall and the purpose of the study is to investigate and analyze their cooling system properties, both in terms of produced cooling capacity and the opportunities for distribution on the facility. Through increased knowledge of system operation, proposals for optimization can be worked out to reduce the risk of cooling problems and costly production limitation. Because the distribution system is old, there are opportunities to use modern technology to get the system more energy efficient. When making the system more efficient it allows resources to be saved and this is an important step towards sustainable development. To get an overview of the problems in the system has the cooling effect been mapped and compared with the maximal production capacity. Flow measurements have been performed on the system to chart how the flows looks and the actual flow has been compared with the projected values to determine how well balanced the system is. In the current situation has the investigation showed that the system has enough production of cooling effect. But that there are relatively large differences between projected and actual flows. It also emerged that in the current situation the circulation pumps are not capable to supplying sufficient total flow to satisfy the designed requirements. To calculate how the adjustment will affect the pressure drops in the system and determine how the pumps design would look at the operation of a balanced system has a calculation-model of pressure drops in the system been built up with the data from the facility. To solve the problem, the system should be balanced so that the correct flow serving the respective needs. The pumps should be run so the overall flow is big enough to serve the total design flow. This can be solved by parallel operation and increased speed of the pumps. The investigation has shown that if the pumps would be speed-controlled against a proportional pressure limit, it can reduce the costs of pump energy and that leads to a potential for saving money. The study has shown that there are opportunities for a range of proceed that could reduce the electricity consumption of the pump at certain periods of up to 75%.

Alternative Strategies for Engine Control / Alternativa reglerstrategier för motor-regleringKahriman, Edin, Jovanovic, Srdjan January 2015 (has links)
The existing powertrain control system in Volvo CE's vehicles consists of various types of physical quantities that are controlled. One of them is the engine speed. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate whether there are other control strategies suitable for engine speed control, than the existing one. Currently, the existing control system requires re-calibration of the control parameters if hardware in the vehicle is replaced. The current controller is a gain-scheduled PID controller with control parameters that varies over the operating range. The aim has been to develop several different adaptive control strategies. Adaptive control methods are expected to adapt to the changes of the system that a replacement of hardware can bring. The performance and robustness of the developed controllers have been compared with the existing controller. The approach has been to implement the control strategies in Matlab/Simulink and simulate the process with existing engine software provided by Volvo CE. The next step was to test and verify the controllers in a real machine. The focus in this thesis work has been on the adaptive control strategies MRAC (Model-Reference Adaptive Control) and L1 Adaptive Control. In the MRAC structure the desired performance is specified in terms of a reference model that the real system is supposed to follow. Each time an error is generated, by comparing actual and desired output, a suitable algorithm is used in order to obtain the control signal that can minimize the error. In addition, modeling errors and disturbances are estimated so that the controller can compensate for these. L1 Adaptive Control is an extension of the MRAC structure. The difference is that before the control signal is fed to the real system, it is low-pass filtered. This is done in order to prevent feeding high frequencies into the system. The results show that adaptive control has potential to be used in engine speed control. Reference following and disturbance rejection is well handled and simulations have furthermore shown that the developed controllers can deal with changes in the hardware. One of the developed L1-controllers was implemented in a real machine with promising results.
