Defining health from a Plains Cree perspective

The current state of Aboriginal health is of national concern. Aboriginal people as a population do not have the same level of health as other Canadians. There has been a long history of providing health care based on Eurocentric (Western) ideology that has not taken into account Aboriginal peoples perspective. There is limited research to provide insight toward understanding how Aboriginal people understand, define, and address their health concerns. <p> This study used the Kaupapa Maori Philosophy/Methodology to define health from a Plains Cree (Indigenous) perspective. A qualitative descriptive research study was done in Thunderchild First Nation. A combination of purposeful and convenience snowball sampling was utilized to select 14 participants to reach saturation. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eleven open-ended questions to facilitate elaborations during the interviews. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data, and then the data was categorized using the Medicine Wheel. <p>Four broad themes were derived from the data. Health was consistently described in relation to physical, emotional, intellectual (mental), and spiritual wellness. Collectively there does appear to be a holistic perception of health, similar to the teachings from the Medicine Wheel. Half of the participants described health from a holistic perspective and half described health using two of the four components of the Medicine Wheel: physical, emotional, intellectual (mental), and spiritual wellness. Pursuing and maintaining health included a combination of information and practices from both the Western and Traditional Indigenous world. Further collaboration and research is necessary to determine if the findings are similar among other Aboriginal Peoples in Saskatchewan.

The development of a conceptual framework for spirituality in the South African employee assistance programme context

To answer the research question of "What would a conceptual framework for spirituality in an employee assistance (EAP) context entail?" an exploratory-descriptive approach was followed. A literature study was conducted to understand the construct of spirituality and the importance thereof in human functioning. Further, spirituality in practical contexts was explored, both in the workplace and in the EAP contexts. The researcher concluded that spirituality is better situated in the EAP that in the workplace setting in general. To further explore spirituality in the EAP context, a quantitative approach was followed and a survey in the form of web-based questionnaire was distributed to a list of EAP practitioners and professionals, which was obtained form EAPA-SA. Survey links were distributed to 232 (valid) email addresses of the members on the EAPA-SA list, and an additional 25 survey links were distributed to other respondents using snowball sampling. Out of the total of 257 valid survey links distributed, a total of 57 completed responses were received, a response rate of 22%. The survey aimed to explore the knowledge, attitudes and practices in respect of spirituality in their respective employee assistance practices. The respondents rated spirituality quite highly in both their own and in their clients' lives, indicating strong positive attitudes towards spirituality and that they frequently deal with spiritual matters in practice. However, respondents indicated uncertainty regarding their own knowledge levels and the training they received to enable them to deal with these matters in practice. Today's organisations are faced with changes such as increased competition and technological changes, not to mention the impact of globalisation on South African organisations. In a sense, the 21" century brought forth a more positive outlook and is described by some as the century of fortegenic living and wellness. Organisations today are searching for programmes that support strengths and wellness, as opposed to the historic employee assistance programmes. Spiritual wellness seems to be the antibiotic for these negative impacts. The objective of this study was to conceptualise spiritual work wellness and develop basic, generic guidelines for the implementation of spiritual work wellness programmes within .the diverse organisational context of South Africa. A qualitative method was applied as the approach that guided the research. The participants were recruited by making use of a combined purposive and network sampling. The sample size (N = 10) was determined by data saturation. Data gathering was done by means of a semi-structured interview with each of the participants. Where the need arose, the participants were afforded the opportunity for in-depth discussions and clarification. Data-analysis was done by means of cognitive mapping, followed by the transcription of data and the combined technique of content analysis. Data-analysis was also done by an independent co-coder. From the discussion of the research results and literature control, conclusions were made regarding spiritual wellness with specific reference to the workplace and to how spiritual wellness is conceptualised from the literature and also to the contribution of that conceptualisation towards answering certain essential questions. More conclusions concerning spiritual work wellness were made through the experts’ perceptions of how spiritual work wellness relates to the South African work force. Spiritual Wellness as a Predictor for Moral Injury in Combat Veterans

Many combat veterans face difficulties coping with their personal lives, relationships, and families when they leave the service and return to civilian life. Most studies examining the effects of combat on veterans focus on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as well as a collection of related consequences. Interest in the term moral injury of military veterans as a related mental health construct has grown. Researchers have investigated the effects of spiritual wellness of combat veterans. However, there is a paucity of counseling literature on the relationship between spiritual wellness and moral injury when combat veterans return to civilian life. Investigating the relationship between spiritual wellness and moral injury as based in existential theory could offer insights to improve quality of life of veterans, families, and society. This study examined the connection between spiritual wellness and moral injury among combat veterans using a quantitative survey with a cross-sectional, correlational analysis and incorporating demographic variables. Results showed that the relationship of spiritual wellness on moral injury is statistically significant. Participants with low spiritual well-being were likely to have an elevated level of moral injury. Those with strong levels of life meaning and purpose were less likely to experience moral injury. These findings can be used to help combat veterans heal from the wounds of war. Clinical interventions associated with life meaning and purpose could enable successful reintegration of combat veterans into society. Results could be used to identify and test specific treatment options. Outcomes could also be used to explore the relationship of combat veterans to other professions subject to moral injury and further explore the relationship of moral injury to PTSD.
