Fueling for Optimal Health and Performance| A Nutrition Curriculum for Parents of Adolescent Figure Skaters

Kinnier, Kelsey 02 February 2018 (has links)
<p> The purpose of this project was to create a nutrition education program with relevant nutrition topics for parents with at least one adolescent child attending an elite training school for figure skating. This program aims to enhance parental knowledge and increase awareness surrounding the nutrition needs of elite adolescent figure skaters. The 6-week nutrition education program consists of six 40-minute PowerPoint presentations with corresponding topic-specific handouts, activities, and lesson plans. Each lesson includes a research-based curriculum, providing parents with specific nutrition recommendations to promote healthy eating patterns for their adolescent figure skating children. </p><p> An expert panel comprised of three registered dietitians with sports nutrition experience reviewed the curriculum using the Formative Evaluation. The average scores from the evaluation were positive, indicating that the curriculum is appropriate, accurate, and provides valuable information for the target audience. To further evaluate the curriculum&rsquo;s efficacy, a study could be conducted to facilitate this 6-week nutrition curriculum to determine the curriculum's effectiveness by assessing class participants&rsquo; nutrition knowledge before and after implementation.</p><p>

The role of sport captaincy affecting the overall performance on an athlete

Beerwinkel, Andrew January 2018 (has links)
Leadership in sport is a very important aspect in sport and is an aspect that can have a big role in determining whether a team is successful or not. Different bodies within a team setting all need to work together and have to be aligned the same way in order for the leadership to have a positive effect on the team (Believe perform, 2013). At the spearhead of the leadership structure of a team is the captain of the team that leads the team into battle when competing against other opponents. The importance of a sport captain has to be recognized as a good captain can lead their team to success and victory whereas, a weak captain that has poor leadership abilities can deteriorate the team`s chance of success and victory (Hsin-Yi Cohen BSc, 2016). Sport captaincy is a much coveted position in sport teams and is also regarded as the most important position in the team. However, with the prestige of being captain come added roles and responsibilities. The additional leadership responsibility does not necessary ensure that the overall performance of an athlete will remain at a preselected level. There is a complex relationship between factors impacting on whether captaincy will improve or deteriorate performance. Some of these factors can be the fact that the captain has to divide his attention in a game situation while at the same time still having to perform well him or herself. The captain also has to manage the behavioral issues of the players in the team, on and off the field, and also has to manage the referee during game situations so that certain decisions will go the way of his/her team. These factors can help to improve the performance of a captain while others factors will lead to the captain`s performance deteriorating. 10 In taking all of the factors into consideration it can be asked that, if all the added pressure that goes with being the captain and leader of a team and having to set the example for the rest of the team have an impact on the overall performance of the athlete. Will the added roles and responsibilities associated with being the leader of the team hamper the performance of a captain as player, or will it provide the athlete with the necessary boost to perform even better in his/her sporting code? The study posed the following question: ‘How does the role of sport captaincy impact on the overall performance of an athlete?’ The study utilised a qualitative research approach to data collection and analysis. Research participants were selected through a process of non-probability key informant sampling. Data was analysed according to themes that surfaced throughout the data collection phase. The study found that, even though the role of captain of a sport team carries additional responsibility, players perceive the additional responsibility to be a motivating factor. The function of the captain as bridge between the coach and the players surfaced as an important role played by the respective captains. It was further emphasised that this leadership role should not be shouldered alone and that the responsibility must be shared with peer leaders in the team. Clear communication was also highlighted as important ingredient in achieving team cohesion and, as a result, to be successful as team. / Dissertation (MA (Sport and Recreation Management))--University of Pretoria, 2018. / Humanities Education / MA (Sport and Recreation Management) / Unrestricted

Pitch it to Me: The Determinants of a Professional Baseball Pitcher’s Salary

Glasser, Jacob 01 January 2017 (has links)
The professional sports industry is one of the most engaging and entertaining markets in the United States. Specifically, Major League Baseball is unique in the sense that it is America’s pastime and oldest American sport. Professional baseball teams are businesses that trade commodities in the form of baseball players. Unlike publicly traded stocks, baseball players are not traded on an exchange. So, what determines the “price” of professional baseball players? More specifically, what determines the price of professional pitchers in the MLB? My study reveals that pitching is an extremely subjective aspect of baseball and there is no one statistic that can be used to forecast a pitcher’s salary. Based on my research and analysis, I investigate which performance metrics are the most important in determining a professional pitcher’s salary and if these metrics can ultimately be used to forecast future pitchers’ salaries in order for baseball franchises to acquire undervalued pitchers.

Determinants of Professional Soccer Team Values: Analyzing the International Effects on the Value of Professional Soccer Teams

Attamimi, Muhammad Fadri 01 January 2017 (has links)
In 2014, Professor Scelles and his colleagues ran a test regarding the determinants of professional soccer team values. This thesis will follow a similar model and estimate the determinants of firm values in professional soccer teams from 2007-2016. It will include Asian ownership, percentage of foreign players and Asian sponsorship as new variables. This paper will also test the determinants on market cap and enterprise value in addition to Forbes’ valuation. The results of this study shows that the new variables have a significant impact depending on the valuation that is being tested on.

Narcissism in Athletics| Is the Athlete/Jock Distinction Useful?

McIntyre, Krystol L. 24 March 2017 (has links)
<p> Sport participation is important for many adolescents and young adults, as they explore their identity and personality expression. In response to controversy over the &ldquo;dumb jock&rdquo; stereotype, and research exploring differing athletic identities, this investigation examined the personality differences between self-identifying &ldquo;Athletes&rdquo; and &ldquo;Jocks.&rdquo; Much research on student athletes examines the benefits and risks associated with sports participation, with no criteria to identify which athletes may be more at risk. The disparity in the research on the benefits and risks associated with sports participation may be mediated by identity and personality. Previous research suggests that a group identified as &ldquo;Jocks&rdquo; display behaviors indicative of narcissistic and antisocial personality, but does not examine personality directly. In this study, narcissistic traits were assessed using the Narcissistic Personality Inventory-13. Participants included in the study met the following criteria: age 18-24, played at least one year of high school sports, and currently play on a high contact sports team at Division I or II undergraduate universities in the U.S. Data was collected via online survey. Findings indicate that self-identified &ldquo;Jocks&rdquo; endorse higher levels of narcissism overall, as well as higher levels of three narcissistic trait facets. This lends evidence to the idea that there may be a construct to help explain some of the negative behavior associated with athletics. Finally, this study may benefit individuals who work with student athletes by helping to identify youth who may be at higher risk for problem behaviors and/or mental health concerns, particularly those who begin to display traits at an early age.</p>

"Lift as you rise"| A phenomenological analysis of the NCAA/NACWAA Institute for Administrative Advancement

Lower, Aaron C. 17 February 2017 (has links)
<p> Since the first intercollegiate athletic event in 1852, a patriarchal hegemony has controlled the governance, policy making, and leadership of intercollegiate athletics. Not until 1972 did women enter the national narrative on college sports participation and administration, albeit through federal mandate and in marginal fashion. More than forty years after the passage of Title IX, intercollegiate athletics still lacks a strong female presence in executive administrative positions. The National Association of Collegiate Women Administrators (NACWAA) is the only professional organization devoted solely to developing and advancing the success of women in the profession of intercollegiate athletics. </p><p> This study examined the lived experiences of seven women athletics administrators who participated in a leadership development program, the Institute for Administrative Advancement (IAA), offered by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and NACWAA. This dissertation used hermeneutical phenomenology to qualitatively describe how IAA participants make sense of this leadership development experience. By thoroughly characterizing the meaning ascribed to the IAA experience as well as the actualization of the IAA curriculum, the results of this study characterize how participants of the NCAA/NACWAA IAA perceive a) career development and leadership and b) leadership self-efficacy. </p><p> Seven themes emerged through data analysis: 1) Discrimination is evident. Many forms of discrimination were perceived, 2) Individual perceptions of leadership were varied and dynamic, 3) Self-assessment of leadership skills evolved over the duration of the IAA, 4) Expectations of the IAA experience were modest yet hopeful, 5) Participants experienced contrasting emotional states throughout the IAA, 6) Actualization of the learned skill set resulted in a variety of outcomes, and 7) The IAA was an empowering and transformative experience.</p><p> Based on the emergent themes, implications and recommendations are offered to counterbalance the underrepresentation of women in athletic administration. The findings from this study also serve a broader application to higher education. The narratives shared by the participants can provide a pathway to empower other women and members of historically underrepresented and socially excluded groups within higher education administration toward professional advancement. </p>

Transforming Intercollegiate Athletics| An Ethnographic Study on the Impact of the Servant Leader on the Cultivation of Self-Actualization in Division I Student Athletes

Davis, Ashley M. 26 March 2019 (has links)
<p> Why are the needs of Division I intercollegiate student athletes important in relation to their overall growth? Answering this question requires a consideration of the way in which student athlete needs continuously evolve and how the quality of leadership from the head coach plays a significant role in orchestrating a team environment that ensures needs are adequately met. The researcher was inspired to study servant leadership and its impact on student athlete personal development and fulfillment to address how Division I head coaches can skillfully serve the needs of their players, enabling them to grow towards self-actualization. Twenty Division I women's soccer student athletes and their head coach were interviewed and observed for four weeks during the fall 2018 season. To corroborate the qualitative data, a survey gauging the degree to which student athletes felt their head coach espoused servant leader behavior, was also deployed to all student athletes within this particular Division I athletic department. </p><p> Findings indicate that it is the head coach who creates an environment fostering peak experiences for the student athlete, allowing them to further identify their needs in and out of the practice setting. Findings also indicate the student athlete prefers a head coach that truly cares for them beyond their athletic identity, serving their needs as a person and not just a student athlete. Ultimately, servant leadership in Division I athletics is demonstrated through an intricate process of head coach balance between harder and softer approaches, identity symmetry, and the accommodation of student athlete needs, impacting the student athlete&rsquo;s overall university experience and their journey to personal fulfillment. Findings are presented as a cultural portrait, incorporating views of the participants and observational impressions from the researcher. This research validates demonstrates the importance of the head coach-student athlete relationship and its influence on the student athlete&rsquo;s self-concept through the espousal of servant leader behavior.</p><p>
