Pereira, Diogo de Oliveira Fialho January 2007 (has links)
Among the renewable energy sources used to generate electric power one of the most important at this time is the wind power. This work focuses on the stability study of wind power systems equiped with fixed-speed squirrel-cage induction generators. The angular stability of a wind generation system equipped with wind generators of this nature is studied. This is a typical topology in power systems stability analysis and is adopted in this work aiming at obtaining analytical and general stability results. The transient analysis is performed by computer simulations. In order to provide more generatily to the stability results, all simulations are conducted with three wind generators with distinct characteristics. The obtained results allow a better comprehension about the influence, on the stability of wind power systems, of power system network parameters as: short-circuit capacity of the common connection point with the power system, the X/R relation of the transmission line and the power factor compensation capacitor.

I-UPQC for electric power quality improvement in wind turbine fixed speed / I-UPQC para melhoria da qualidade da energia elÃtrica em aerogeradores de velocidade fixa

Juliana Izabel Lara UchÃa 18 December 2015 (has links)
Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento CientÃfico e TecnolÃgico / Fixed speed wind turbines completely dominated the market until the mid-1990s and currently. Although most installed wind turbine are variable speed, many fixed speed wind are still in operation. In this context, this work presents a study concerned to coordinated operation of FACTS (Flexible Alternating Current Transmission Systems) device with fixed speed wind energy conversion system (WECS) equipped with a squirrel cage induction generator. The applied FACTS device is based on the control strategy of the Unified Conditioner Power Quality with inverted topology (i-UPQC), and consists of two static converters connected in back-to-back topology. A model was developed in the software PSCAD/EMTDC, tested under four different scenarios and discussed in order to validate the presented theory. The i-UPQC performance was analyzed for improving voltage quality in the point of common coupling (PCC), reduction of the harmonic currents drained from the wind turbine, and increasing the induction generator capacity to remain connected during a momentary collapse in the grid voltage. The i-UPQC presented good performance due to its capability to warrant the quality in the PCC voltage in spite of the wind variation and that the voltage sags at the PCC do not change the stator voltages. About the generator current, the i-UPQC has kept the stator current free of harmonic components and the effect of unbalanced loads. Under normal operation it was demonstrated that one of the I-UPQC converters can be sized as 50\% of the generator rated power, which is an advantage for real implementation. A comparison between two ways to connect the I-UPQC to the grid, along with the wind turbine, was made. The series converter connected between the wind turbine and the parallel converter, or between parallel converter and the common connection point (PCC). It was concluded that the shunt converter connected to the generator presents better performance than the series converter due to series converter currents are less than the stator currents. Under this configuration, there is no active power current from the generator injected in the PCC during voltage sags.

Nascimento, Carlos Sonier Cardoso do January 2014 (has links)
Commonly, induction machines are designed to act as motors. Thus, the present thesis aims to study, analyze and build a prototype of an induction machine designed to work exclusively as induction generator, i.e. driven above synchronous speed. The optimal steady state operating characteristics are elaborated by bringing design guidelines. Concomitantly, this study investigates and presents analytical modeling obtained by lumped parameters and also numerical modeling carried out by the finite element method. Thus, a three-phase squirrel cage induction generator of 2.2 kW with asymmetric rotor slots has designed and prototyped. The prototype of the induction generator aims best performance characteristics such as power factor, for example, than an induction machine of the same power designed to act as a motor, but functioning as generator parallel with the grid. Analytical, numerical and experimental results in steady state operation of the induction generator prototype and of an induction motor of the same power, but functioning as generator parallel with the grid, are presented and compared. The experimental results show nominal values 0.77 and 83.04% of power factor and efficiency, respectively, for the conventional machine in the operating point close to the value of rated current. For the induction machine designed as a generator, the nominal values 0.82 and 81.35% of power factor and efficiency, respectively, were obtained in the operating point close to the value of rated current.

Valencia Guerrero, Gabriel Andrés January 2014 (has links)
The generation of electricity from renewable sources is increasing, one of the largest growth is the wind power. However the installation of the machines that leverage this resource could bring some problems to the grid due to the intermittency of the wind speed. This work analyzes the behavior of variable speed wind turbines with Doubly-Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) and fixed-speed wind turbines with Squirrel Cage Induction Generator (SCIG). The case study is based in Jepirachi wind farm in Colombia, that at the present has fixed-speed wind turbines with Squirrel Cage Induction Generator (SCIG). To do this study, initially the modeling of the wind farm considering some parameters of commercial wind turbines with variable speed and fixed speed, also modeling the main components of the electric grid of the region to obtain an approximation of it, after computer simulations we made in order to obtain the behavior of the electric power system powered by these types of turbines. Finally the analysis of the effects produced by each type of machine, in the power flow and the voltage level of the grid operating in steady state, but considering the disturbances caused by changes in wind speed are made.

Ávila, Manuel Ricardo Vargas January 2014 (has links)
At present Brazil has one of the most renewable energy matrices in the world, but the challenge of reducing emission levels, allowing the economic growth, and helping about 1 million people without electric energy in the country, requires research and development of new technologies that enable the use of clean and sustainable energy sources, such as wind power. Wind energy is considered among the existing renewable alternatives the more viable in the energy market, due to the low cost / benefit ratio of exploitation, having experienced exponential growth over the years. The wind system are classified according to their operation into two types: operating systems with fixed speed and systems with variable speed operation. For many years the leadership in the market was for fixed speed generator, being the most used machine, the induction generator rotor cage (SCIG). From 2000, the leadership in the market was for variable speed wind turbine. Today, there are two types of wind generators widely used in systems that operate at variable speed: synchronous generator and generator with wound rotor induction. In this work we will study one of the machines that operate at variable speed and use induction generators with wound rotor: the doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG). Its importance is mainly the independent control of active power and reactive power supplied to the grid, and operating at maximum efficiency in energy conversion. In this context, this work presents a comparative analysis of a generation system using DFIG type machines with four control strategies: control of active power and voltage at the terminals of the machine, control of reactive power and voltage at the machine terminals, control the rotational speed and tension in the machine terminals, control of active power and reactive power supplied by the machine. This analysis is done by comparing the behavior of the system when subjected to various situations, such as variations in power demand of electric load, changes in the mechanical torque and the occurrence of a three-phase fault. The performance of wind power generation systems with SCIG is also included in this analysis to illustrate quantitatively the gains obtained using DFIG. The results illustrate the virtues of each of the different possible operating modes of the DFIG in a distribution system and allow a better understanding of the performance advantage of the machine DFIG over the use of the machine SCIG.
