Investigating the variations in depositional facies by investigating the accuracy of the neural network model within the St. Louis limestone, Kearny County, Kansas

Reece, Chance January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Geology / Matt Totten / The Mississippian-aged St. Louis Limestone has been a major producer of oil, and natural gas for years in Kearny County, Kansas. Since 1966 two major fields in the County, the Lakin, and Lakin South fields, have produced over 4,405,800 bbls of oil. The St. Louis can be subdivided into six different depositional facies, all with varying lithologies and porosities. Only one of these facies is productive, and the challenge of exploration in this area is the prediction of the productive facies distribution. A previous study by Martin (2015) used a neural network model using well log data, calibrated with established facies distributed within a cored well, to predict the presence of these facies in adjacent wells without core. It was assumed that the model’s prediction accuracy would be strongest near the cored wells, with increasing inaccuracy as you move further from the cored wells used for the neural network model. The aim of this study was to investigate the accuracy of the neural network model predictions. Additionally, is the greater accuracy closest to the cored wells used to calibrate the model, with a corresponding decrease in predictive accuracy as you move further away? Most importantly, how well did the model predict the primary producing unit (porous ooid grainstone) within the St. Louis Limestone? The results showed that the neural network was not completely reliable in predicting total facies distribution. This can be attributed to many different inefficiencies in the data, including different resolutions between cuttings data and well logs, limited well cuttings available, and missing cuttings from the wells that were observed. Relating the neural network predictions to actual well productivity validates the neural network’s ability to predict the producing facies. There are also instances of the productive facies being present when not predicted. This is likely a function of different facies thickness in these wells from the cored wells used to calibrate the model, rather than distance from the cored well.

Riverfront Reds: Communism and Anticommunism in East St. Louis, 1930-35

Barbero, Andrew Scott 01 May 2011 (has links)
The onset of the Depression Era in the United States re-energized the Communist Party. Communists gained new support from the unemployed and indigent, as well as from various institutionally repressed social groups. That new energy was met by a resurgence of ardent anticommunism from establishment leaders indicative of the Red Scare following the First World War. The debate over communism quickly engulfed the nation. It played out, sometimes violently, in cities and towns across the United States. This thesis examines that debate at the local level. Using one Midwestern industrial center, East St. Louis, Illinois as the case study, it attempts to complicate the larger narrative of communism and anticommunism in the United States, and strives to provide new context for both the methods and motivations of the Communist Party and its supporters, as well as opposing establishment figures. This framework, though innovative, is not unprecedented. Historians have examined communism at the grassroots level in the United States for the past few decades. However, these case studies differ in that they overwhelming tend to focus on large metropolises that posses a unique history for the national party and its leaders. By exploring the debate over communism in a smaller urban center that lacked a CP presence before the Depression, this thesis seeks to provide new depth into both the history of communism and anticommunism in the United States, and the actions and motivations of many everyday Americans whose lives had been radically changed after the economic crash.

A study of the fossil vertebrate fauna from the Jasper Hiemstra Quarry, Delta, Iowa and its environment

Snyder, Daniel 01 January 2006 (has links)
The Jasper Hiemstra limestone quarry outside of Delta, Iowa, preserves an aquatic and terrestrial fauna from the Late Mississippian of Midwestern North America. Stratigraphic and paleontological data demonstrate that the quarry correlates with the Ste. Genevieve Formation, approximately 330 million years (Ma) ago. The site formed in a karst terrain with at most minor marine influence. Numerous invertebrate and as-yet undefined vertebrate taxa are preserved. Three new vertebrate taxa are described here for the first time. Eustreptogyracanthus iaspius is a gyracanth gnathostome that possesses unique sculpturing on the pectoral fins. It is associated with scales and elements of the pectoral girdle, similar to those seen elsewhere in the group. Floydus punicellus is a rhizodontid sarcopterygian that possesses a partially ossified brain case, enlarged pelvis, sculptured underside to the postparietals and anteroposterior lateral line enervation of the postparietals and supratemporals. Aliuslater inmuri is an actinopterygian that possesses an unusual upper jaw. Previous workers have found evidence for a consistant tetrapod province around the world over a period of time that includes the Hiemstra Quarry's deposition, but the present analysis does not find strong support for this hypothesis.
